Garmin dezl 770 custom avoidances for toll roads

I've tried to add the 407 as a custom avoidance but my 770 refuses to accept it. As a truck driver, my company does not allow driving on the 407, but we do use toll bridges and toll roads in the US.

To avoid having to switch between "Avoid" and "Allow" whenever I cross the border, I tried to set up the 407 as an avoided route. No dice, it still wants to take me on there if I allow toll routes. Anyone else have this issue, or more importantly, know how to resolve it? Thanks.

Creating, editing, or deleting custom avoidances on an automotive device

Your device allows you to set up custom avoidances so that you can avoid specific areas and lengths of road. This feature is useful if you want to avoid certain streets because they are a problem to travel on, as well as avoiding certain areas where your vehicle may not have the capability to travel, or if you simply do not wish to travel in that particular area. A maximum of fifty (50) custom avoidances can be created.

Note: Custom road avoidances may have to be re-set after each map update. Custom area avoidances should remain accurate and intact.

To access custom avoidances:

Touch Settings
Touch Navigation
Touch Custom Avoidances
Touch Add Avoid Area or Add Avoid Road

After selecting the desired type of custom avoidance, you'll be able to select the area or road that you want to avoid.

To avoid a specific area:

Locate the area you want to avoid
Touch a point on the map that you want to be one corner of the avoid area
Touch Next
Touch a point on the map that you want to be the opposite corner of the avoid area
Touch Next
Confirm that the area you want to avoid is completely covered by the rectangular area
Touch Finish or Done

The device will now avoid the area you selected.

To avoid a specific length of road:

Locate the road you would like to avoid all or part of
Touch the point on the map that will mark the beginning of the stretch of road you would like to avoid
Touch Next
Touch the point on the map that will mark the end of the stretch of road you would like to avoid
Touch Next
Confirm that the highlighted area contains the entire length of road that you would like to avoid
Touch Finish or Done

The device will now avoid the area you selected.

To edit or delete a custom avoidance:

Access the Custom Avoidance menu
Touch the Custom Avoidance you would like to edit or delete
Touch the menu button that shows as three horizontal lines
Select the desired action
Rename will allow you to type a new name for the selected custom avoidance for easier identification
Disable/Enable will turn the selected custom avoidance off or on without permanently deleting it
Delete will permanently delete the selected avoidance

Repeat these steps as desired to edit or delete other custom avoidances.

To delete more than one custom avoidance at a time:

Access the Custom Avoidance menu
Touch the trash can icon in the upper-left corner
Touch each custom avoidance that will be deleted
Touch Select All if you wish to delete all custom avoidances
Touch the magnifying glass to search for specific custom avoidances
Touch Delete

The selected custom avoidances will be deleted. Note that after touching Delete, no confirmation message will appear. Confirm the selections prior to touching Delete.

Thank you Charles, that

Thank you Charles, that matches the steps I've taken to try to add an avoided road, however the gps still wants to take me on the 407. I've tried deleting and then adding them again, but I still get the same result.

Avoid

Did you try rebooting gps before trying again. How are you testing your results?Did you do a route simulation with the device? Also in the notes about avoidance.

Note that devices will only avoid selected items when it is possible.

Worth A Try

I'm wondering if you change the settings to shorter distance rather than fastest route if that would change taking you on 407?

I did reboot the gps between

I did reboot the gps between attempts. Used to do some computer repair, so I tend to follow similar procedures when working with any electronics. The route I'm using has easy options for not using the 407, but it defaults to the 407 if I have toll roads set to "allow". If I set it to "avoid" it uses to 401/403/QEW.

FYI, I have the avoidance set at the start of the 407 EB in Burlington (43.344136, -79.831048) and the end in Oshawa (43.980182, -78.877216). For the 407 WB, I did the reverse. I chose the proper lanes on the GPS and I did the start and end points in the order of the traffic flow.

.

Seems like it could be a firmware bug...the setting of allowing toll roads is cancelling out or overriding the custom road avoidance you have set up.

I would contact Garmin regarding this...but they may say this is "by design". rolleyes
