Garmin RMA status showing returned

I have two 755t's. The older of the two I purchased on 1/26/09 and it has sporatic problems with the usual 7x5 touchscreen issues. I decided to send it to Garmin before my 1 year is up, and after checking on my RMA number today, the status shows returned. It does not appear that they have replaced it with another unit because the exchanged serial number is my original serial number.

Has anyone else had this issue? Is there something they are doing to the units now instead of sending a replacement? I told them the problem seems to be sporadic, so does that mean if they could not duplicate the issue they are just going to send it back?

I would not have wasted my time sending in my new unit for a refurbished unit if it didn't have a problem. I was planning on sending my second unit back once I received the refurbished unit, as it has the same issue at times. The unit I sent them has a serial in the 004600 range, and my second one is in the 040400 range.

Both have issues, and it is extremely annoying when you want to choose tools and it selects map, or when entering your pin it enters a totally different number. On the newer unit this occurs numerous times on a daily basis, and on the older unit maybe every other day a few times. I have done the screen calibration dozens of times, and they both have the latest revisions.

Anyone else have a RMA returned?

Nevermind

Guess I spoke too soon...got this message fom Garmin today:

We have processed RMA 1820xxxx and exchanged your nüvi® 755T (serial number 1AP004xxx) for a replacement device.

Congratulations. My

Congratulations. My experience with Garmin was a long process.

So Bad

It appears Garmin replaces almost every GPS they sell due to poor quality and programming...I have had to return three 750 units and the last one doesn't even work right. Can you believe all the problems with all of their units based on the posts on this website?

Garmin

My first GPS was a Garmin GPSMAP 76CSx. I broke it. I had an external antenna for it because of an issue with a car windshield that blocked the signal unless the unit was actually on the dash. At the time, I didn't have a mount. The end came off of the antenna cable inside the Garmin plug and, in trying to remove it, I totally trashed the plug.

I called Garmin and asked if they could repair the unit. I explained that I understood it was my fault and that it wouldn't be under warranty for this issue. Garmin sent me a brand new unit (not a refurb) and charged me NOTHING.

Later, after leaving that unit on the hood of my truck and driving off (more than once) which resulted in the GPS sliding off the hood and bouncing down the road, the unit exhibited some quirky behavior where I sometimes had to push a button several times before anything happened and then all of the pushes on the button were executed at once. I called Garmin and explained the problem. They sent me a refurbished unit and charged me NOTHING.

I got that first GPS for geocaching. When I started geocaching the folks who participated in that activity were pretty evenly split between Garmin and Magellan units. Today, it's more of a 90% Garmin and 10% Magellan split - possibly even more Garmin users than that - and it's due to the fact that Garmin service was dramatically better than Magellan service.

Garmin isn't perfect. From what I've read here it's possible that their service isn't as good today as it used to be. However, I'd still bet that Garmin's service is far superior to that of other companies.

I had trouble with one firmware update on my nüvi 760 but the next update corrected the problem. I replaced my own battery on that unit and it was easy. I use the 760 constantly both for navigation and for listening to audio books. I love the thing. I still use the 76CSx for geocaching and it works great.

Bash Garmin all you like but, for may part, I've found them to be a darn good company and I'm happy with both the products and the service.

Replacement any better?

I'm just wondering if the replacement they send me will be any better. The 7x5 series has been plagued with problems. This is the first time I have sent a unit back, and hopefully it will be a positive experience.

The touchscreen issue on my 755's are so common that I almost forget that it's a defect. Finally I decided that since I paid good money for them, they should work properly. So I sent my original one in and will be sending my second 755 as soon as I get the replacement unit.

It was funny when I called, I stated the problem, told them I had the latest update, and that I tried the recalibration numerous times. No questions asked, they gave me an RMA #. I thought they were gonna make me go thru the whole process anyway, but I guess it's so common that they don't even bother.

I have tried other brands, but Garmins products are far superior in my opinion...now if they could just get them to work right!

Let us know

when you get your replacement Greg. I wish you luck, although I don't think I have heard any 7x5 owner say that their touch screen works as it should. I know my 855 never registers a key press incorrectly unless I actually am inprecise in where I press. My 755T incorrectly registers 2 or 3 of every 10 presses no matter how careful I am.

I have two 765T's both touchscreens work just fine--no issues at all.........

New 765T owner

Just got a 765T about a month ago and it works perfectly. I did notice that I have to push in on the screen to get what I want to be pressed, compared to some older models I have used where they respond to just a soft touch, but the screen responses from the touches on mine are precise.

My contact with Garmin

When I called Garmin about my 755 touch screen having problems they told me to return it to Costco or they would take it back and exchange it for a new one. I was told that I would probably get a replacement unit faster from Costo. I asked if they are working on the problem. He told me that about 10 percent have problems. Good Luck. I am suppose to get my new 755T today from the Brown Truck.

Maybe the newer ones....

Maybe they have resolved the problem in the newer units. Glad to see that users are having no problems at all. I can't imagine it's only 10 percent that have problems. As many complaints as there are from people just on this website about it, there has got to be more than that.

I purchased both of my 755's from websites who had the best price at that time. My only option now is to return to garmin. I see them in BJ's now for $199. I bought my first one in January of last year at Walmart.com for $447, and the second in about March 09 for $380. Amazing how fast the price has dropped. Wonder if that could have anything to do with negative publicity about the 7x5 series?

Not Bashing

I am not bashing Garmin...There customer service is great...but why are there so many updates, fixes and problems with there products? I have only owned a Garmin GPS except for a built in unit on a new car which is 4 years old and has never needed a fix or update to make it work right. My whole point is Garmin is throwing these things out right and left and I don't think they are doing quality testing before hand. Current units become obsolete before they are even a couple of months old.

Can't Complain...

I must say I am very happy with the exchange. Not only does the touchscreen work 100% better, but Garmin sent me a 765 instead of a 755. Not sure if that was a mistake, or if they didn't have any refurbished 755's available. I also got a map upgrade with the exchange from 2009.10 to 2010.10. The serial number on the new unit is 253xxx, a huge jump from the 040xxx I returned. I will be returning my second unit this week.

Nuvi 750

I have had a Nuvi 750 from the first month they came out. I have never had any of the problems that other have had. Only problems brought on by me. I do like my 750. Would get another one if needed.

Only 7x5

I believe the touchscreen issue only affected the 7x5 series.

Got my RMA for my second unit this morning. Once again, no questions asked, no making me go thru recalibrating, etc. So far great customer service all the way around.

I just got another 755 from

I just got another 755 from Costco. I tried this one out and within a week, the darn thing is not working right. I am tempted to send it back to Garmin to see if I get a 765 but I don't know how that would work for the Costco warrantee.

Weigh the options

Once you do an RMA from Garmin, you will probably lose the ability to return to Costco. Although the people at the store likely wouldn't know the difference between the 755 and 765, if they check the serial number you would be stuck.

Still waiting on my second RMA to see what they send me....

Costco

Well, I went on the website to order my 3rd 755T from Costco last night and noticed that they do not offer it anymore. Now I am stuck with having to send it back to Garmin for replacement. I am curious to see which unit they send you for the second replacement. BTW, how is your first replacement doing. Have you had any issues with the screen?

Was it a mistake?

I got the second unit back and it was a 755. So that leads me to wonder if the 765 I was sent was by mistake, or possibly they were out of 55's and sent me what they had.

I just took the 765 on a 1400 mile trip and it worked great. There were a few times that the touchpad acted up, but it was nothing compared to the 755 I returned.

This replacement 755 I just got, had 2010.10 maps. I looked at the update button, and it is downloading 2010.40. Not sure why, but I'll try it on this one. I don't think I'll put it on the 765 yet, due to the complaints I have read about for the 2010.40.

2010.40 problems?

What problems have you heard about the 2010.40 maps? I heard about an Interstate in St. Louis that was reopened after a lengthy construction but is still shown as closed on the 2010.40 map. But other than that I have not heard of many issues with this map version. I was pleased to find some new instances of Lane Assist on 2010.40.

Other problems.

Check out these threads. http://www.poi-factory.com/node/27458, http://www.poi-factory.com/node/27491.

Now instead of the next exit showing up while on an interstate, it shows every approaching road.

I installed it on my backup 755, so I'll try it out and see how it works. If I like it, I'll put it on my primary 765.

I also reverted my 765 back to update 3.60 because of the freezing text entering problem, here: http://www.poi-factory.com/node/27696.

It is definitely from the 3.90 update, because as soon as I reverted back to 3.60, the problem vanished.

I used to look forward to the latest firmware and map updates. Now I have to check all the forum threads and try them on the backup before installing them on the primary.

Just the fact that I NEED a backup doesn't say much for Garmin. The funny thing is, I used paper maps forever. The past 8 years or so with a GPS have spoiled me. My unit went out on me on a trip from Conecticut to Texas and it was a pain in the a$$ having to actually pay attention to where I was going!

Lesson learned, always have a backup!

2010.40 map error.

Yes, the first two links you gave are regarding the St. Louis problem I mentioned in my post. So if you need to drive through St. Louis it would probably be a good idea to stick with 2010.30 but otherwise I have not heard of any major problems in 2010.40.

The 3.90 firmware issue you referenced in the other link is not related to the map version.

Bad start

Thing is, if they have already found a problem in the St. Louis area, what else hasn't been found? I'll give it some time and see what else is lerking in the shadows.

I know the firmware issue is not related to the map set, I was just making a point about the negative side to "updating".

2010.40 glitch # 1

Just noticed today that the 2010.40 maps in 3D mode will not show any of the streets at the port of Miami. It shows the street names, but there are no lines drawn. If you turn off 3D maps they appear. 2010.10 maps don't have this problem.

Fix!!!

Don't worry they will come out with fix #1,453,987 to correct all of the goof ups they have. It is unbelievable the way Garmin puts out new products and releases without a good pre release testing program.

Favorite

Had something to happen Wed that I can't figure out.A restaurant we go to in FL is located on a busy hwy US 19.I have the location as a favorite and use my gps on each trip to it so not to miss the turn. This last trip the announcement message said left side and it is located on the right .The gps has always been right before.Only change has been the new map update and firmware update.I would not think a favorite would change in location.Once I got back home and checked the coordinates with Google and it shows on the right side.Did check against a Sam's location in favorites and it was correct on arrival notice.I did re-mark the coordinates using Where AM I for the restaurant. Will check on next trip.

.

The favorite(s) may not have changed but the map data likely did between map revisions. I have various City Navigator maps installing in MapSource and looking at the same area while switching between the different mapset versions often shows streets/highways being slightly tweaked. Even a slight tweak can throw your favorite off in it's position on the map itself.

In other words, your favorite is not moving...the road on the map is.

Sounds like a good explanation to me.I was thinking along the same line but with the fix coordinates in a favorite was not that sure.May have some others off to now.Hope not have some stops marked for trip back to VA that have been used with the old maps.We will see.

Hey, just wondering how long it took from it being marked as returned till they notified you.
Thanks pal!

About....

I think it took about a week and 1/2 or so between the time I saw the status showed return till I got the unit back.
