WalMart Errors

I don't know how to respond to errors in POI files, and there should be some information about how to do it.

I am traveling in SD and looking for a WalMart. The POI Factory file does not contain a listing for Mitchell SD, but there is one there.

The base POI file for the Garmin does show this location. It would seem to me that starting a POI Factory file should begin by listing all of the locations in the base Garmin database with any location corrections. It is very strange and discourging that the POI Factory listing does not include all the locations in the base Garmin POI lookup.

What to Do?

Walmart updates

Walmart has been and will continue to be a work in progress. The recommended method is to either post the location with as much info as possible: Store# Gas or no gas, street address, phone# and most important, the coordinates, preferably at the entrance of the main street. Post it here:

Or send an email with this info to the current maintainer.

A few years ago, Walmart was opening a new store someplace in the US every 24 hours. Now it seems that they are relocating stores sometimes across town, and sometimes from one town to another. There's no end in sight for those who maintain this file.

We applaud all members that create POI files on this site cause for me it's a big help when I drive my motorhome and I can find all the particular POI's. The files are never going to be perfect but communication is always available with the author.
Thanks to members that create POI's.

The "base" Garmin POI file is locked and cannot be accessed by third-party programs. So there is no way for a person to pull bulk data from the Garmin POI file.

With that said, the Garmin POI file really isn't a good starting point anyway. Why? Because quite a bit of the Garmin data is inaccurate. This is due to the fact that Garmin purchases the POI data from generic business databases. No one at Garmin actually reviews the data to ensure its accuracy.

On the other hand, the vast majority of POI files created at the POI Factory incorporate user-submitted data. So theoretically our files are more accurate.

I also have run into this problem alot while on my many business trips. I will go to a location specified by a POI Factory PI only to find it does not exist.

Is there a process listed on this site somewhere to explain to general POI users like myself how we can help make these POI's better? In other words, when I find one of these POI's in error, what is the next step to ensure that it gets corrected for the next user who downloads it from POI factory?

Do you need me to:
a) Specify the POI Factory name of the POI file
b) Specify which exact location was in error
c) specify to whom?

And what about additions to these POI files? What do I need to collect for the Author of these files so that he can update them?
a) Lat, Long location data
b) Store address?
c) Store Number?

I definitely exercise a lot of these files during my trips. Any help in what I should do to aid this site in updating their POI's would be greatly appreciated.

WalMart - Mitchell, SD

It is in the file as a Super Wal-Mart #2990 at 1100 Spruce St. If there is another store, let me know. The WalMart web site lists that as the only store.
