Help with Extra POI Editor V4.47

Hi,
I just moved from a Nuvi 350 to the Nuvi 765T. Have a few questions while using Extra POI Editor V4.47.

1. Merged contacts in from my 350 but notice that it only imported the Name, Lon, and Lat. No physical address was imported. I imported them by plugging in the 350, opened the favorites, and saved the file to my desktop. After that I plugged in the new 765T, opened it's favorites, then went to file, merge open, and selected the current.gpx file from my desktop. After that I did a save. Like I said, they're on my new 765T now, just doesn't show the physical address.

2. There are alot of extra fields on the POI Edit screen. The only ones I can get to display on my Garmin 765T are Name, Address, City, State, Country, Post Code, and Phone. I would like to be able to display one or two more fields on the Garmin Nuvi 765T to put a persons name (I use the name field for the company name), and one additional field to make a small note of the equipment they have from me. One suggestion said to push the "more" button on my GPS for the additional info. My Garmin 765T doesn't have a more button.

3. Lastly. Is there a way to change the catagory name from catagory 1, catagory 2, etc...?

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated! Love the software! Thanks in advance.

Check out the Display FAQ

If you're loading the Current.gpx file then any address info you see on the unit should also load in EPE. I don't have my 765T here right now to experiment but it does seem like one of the unit files I've imported in the past doesn't always save everything I saw on the unit at the time I stored or viewed it. Sorry to be vague, but I recall that I figured it was a Garmin issue. Like maybe to prevent exporting all the info in their POIs as favorites and redistributing?

Your 765T definitely has a 'More' screen though. You should also have a look at my display format FAQ at
http://www.poi-factory.com/node/21274

At the time I wrote it I came to the conclusion that there were two 'styles' of display characteristics for Garmin units but there have been some new units out since then. If you use the test files from the FAQ and find a unit that differs, send me the details and I'll update the article. I think Whoaboy found a new line break character but I haven't edited the test file yet to include it. I'll revisit the display anomalies on my own 765T soon, since there have been unit software updates that could have an effect as well.

See if putting your info in the Description field 'lights up' the 'More' button on your 765.

As for the Category, you can just change it in EPE by typing or search/replace and it will save and reload with the gpx file. I'm not sure where Turbo is picking up the default Categories from, but mine have custom names from the definitions that I changed in my Mapsource software. Perhaps he's using those names from the Mapsource entries in the Windows registry?

I think the Garmin unit itself will only recognize a total of 16 unique Categories regardless of how many there are in your combined POIs.

It's about the Line- If a line can be drawn between the powers granted and the rights retained, it would seem to be the same thing, whether the latter be secured by declaring that they shall not be abridged, or that the former shall not be extended.

Still having issues

Hi JD,
Thanks for your input. I did take a look at your screen shot and see the "more" button. Seeing the other buttons (back, map, save) it appears you got to this by typing in an address? I did this and still don't have a more button. I attempted to talk to Garmin Tech support and they were really no help. I'm running software version 3.8. They said this is the latest software. What version are you running? Any other suggestions? Have tried putting stuff in the comment and/or description fields with no success.

The Screen Examples

My screen examples follow the general sequence of the nuvi, which is-
The 'List' screen is what shows up after you select Favorites or Extras, and a Category if you have your POIs categorized.

The 'Go' screen is the one you get after you select an item from the 'List' screen. It's from this screen that you should see the 'More' button in the lower right corner if you have anything in the 4th column of a csv file POI or something in either the Description and/or Comment field(s) of a gpx file POI.

The 'More' screen examples will then show you the order that the 200W or 765T type units use when showing these and the address fields (in a gpx) on the 'More' screen.

I don't have my nuvi here to see what s/w version I'm using but I can't imagine that they would have eliminated the 'More' button altogether! shock

I wish I had my nuvi here right now ..

.. the wife has my nuvi so I can't verify this right now but.. the more I think about this..

The more I think you should retype your info from Current.gpx ('Favorites') in EPE, and save it as some other name. Then, run it through POI Loader and put the .gpi file in the Garmin/POI folder on your nuvi.

Fire up the nuvi and look for your POIs in Extras and see if you have all of the missing info. If so, you'll have to save them again as Favorites in the nuvi if that's where you want to find them, or just keep them under Extras.

I think you may be running across the Current.gpx export/storage thing I seem to recall. I think it omits storing some details in the Current.gpx file just to keep people from exporting all of the details in the Garmin POIs that you've 'Favorited'.

1.See this post http://www.poi-factory.com/node/26230
2.Using Extra Poi Editor put data in comment or description field.Save as a gpx file. The more button will not show on the gps screen unless you have more data to show on next screen. This is for custom pois not your favorites
3.Change favorite category on gps by selecting edit for the one selected and touch change category.

Got my nuvi back from my wife & checked...

What charlesd45 says in #2 is your issue, I think ("..for custom pois not your favorites").

While you may have info in the comment or description fields, it doesn't show up when saved as a Favorite and there is no 'More' button, only the address and phone info shows. (On the nuvi. In the current.gpx file the description field is still there, it just doesn't display).

If you save it as a regular POI file and look it up/use it from 'Extras', it does show the extra info (description and/or comment) and the 'More' button.

I just took one of my POIs that displayed both comment & description and a 'More' page, and saved it as a Favorite right there on the nuvi. Sure enough, only the address & phone shows up, not the comment or description when viewed under Favorites.

As an interesting side note, when saved as a Favorite and on opening the Current.gpx file in a text editor (or EPE), it seems that the nuvi took my comment field and changed it to description and discarded what I had in the description field altogether. Never noticed that before.

Almost forgot- my 765T is using GPS s/w version 2.80, Text ver 3.60.

JD4x4. That was the same

JD4x4. That was the same thing I did before posting.Took one of my custom pois that contained extra information and saved as a favorite.Only the name, address and phone number showed on favorite. You will not get the more button for favorites.

Partically Solved

charlesd45 & JD4x4,
Thanks so much for all your help. Problem solved. As long as they're stored under the extra's you can utilize the extra fields on EPE and have the more button for the additional info. This is exactly what I needed. Only question now is that they're not in my favorites rather in extras.....will they show up on the map as I drive by them?

Also,
I notice that in extras they're not in catagories. Do you know if you can create catagories in Extras?

Great!

Glad you're getting close to what you want to see.

charlesd45.. do you also notice the comment/description behavior I mentioned in your current.gpx file (if you looked)?

They will show up if you are zoomed in close enough. You can also set proximity alerts for them. See this thread about zoom: http://www.poi-factory.com/node/9044

Yes, you can have up to 16 categories for them as I recall. EPE is good for setting categories on large POI sets since it has a search/replace feature. Just type your own name over the default 'Category x' in the drop-down box if you do it one by one.

Yes you can have categories for custom pois.

@JD4X4.Yes I noticed the same results in the comment/description.

@jalkrirby

Here is something I typed out for categories for custom pois. http://www.poi-factory.com/node/25721 .That is the best way to go for organizing your custom pois especially if you plan to load a lot of custom pois.Putting all you csv or gpx files using one folder you will reach a limit of around 32 files.Using subfolders will expand that number greatly.

Edit. This is the post on file limits http://www.poi-factory.com/node/15907
