Moving Favorites from Nuvi 360 to Nuvi 765T?

Hi!

I bit the bullet and replaced my failing 360 with a new 765T. If it's possible, how would I move my Favorites from the 360's internal memory to the 765T?

My downloaded POI's are on a card, but the Favorites are in Garmin's memory.

Thanks in advance,

Larry

.

Connect your 350 to your computer.

Start Mapsource and 'receive' the waypoints from your 360.

Save the file for posterity.

Disconnect the 360 (use the wizard in the taskbar for safety's sake) and connect the 765T.

'send' the favorites to the 765T.

Done

Transfering Favorites to a New GPS

Thanks for that useful info. Will trying saving the "Favorites" file from my Nuvi 350.

If you don't have MapSource...

From the nuvi drive, copy x:/Garmin/GPX/current.gpx to your backup location. To restore them, copy current.gpx back to the same folder on the nuvi but rename it to temp.gpx (important). On the next power cycle*, the favorites will be read from temp.gpx into the non-user accessible memory area on the nuvi where they are actually stored (current.gpx is only a shadowed backup of your favorites).

*Note that a "power-cycle" (or power-on/power off sequence) on the nuvi 8x0/8x5 units consists of removing, then reinserting the battery into the unit -or- sliding the power switch to the ON position and holding it there for ~10 seconds. Using the power switch normally on the 8x0/8x5 (slide to ON position and immediately release) to power it off only puts the unit into a "sleep" mode.

Moving favorites.

Question: I assume that the current.gpx file will contain some Garmin Nuvi 350 favorites as well as the ones put in by the user. By renaming the file to temp.gpx and placing it into the Nuvi 765T directory, will the merge of the temp.GPX favorites into the non-user accessable memory of the 765T create any duplicate favorites?

Maybe I am missing something....

Last time when I lost my nuvi 350 and bought another Nuvi 360, the only thing I had done is just copy the copy of current.gpx on my computer to the new Nuvi 360 and all my favorites are back. Why you have to rename it to temp.gpx?

.

Current.gpx will not be read in by the nuvi as it is an output file only generated by the nuvi. When you send waypoints/favorites to the nuvi through MapSource, the same convention is used and temp.gpx is sent to the nuvi where it is read in. Any name can be used, not just temp.gpx (as long as the name is not current.gpx). Current.gpx is only a shadowed copy of the favorites on the nuvi. The nuvi actually stores favorites in a non-user accessible memory area to prevent users from accidentally deleting them by deleting current.gpx.

Keeping the current.gpx name may have worked in the past on the 3xx series (I don't remember) but renaming the file is now required with newer models.

not sure about the duplicates but to be sure you don't have any, just delete all the current favorites from the nuvi using My Data. Then send the new favorites using temp.gpx

Moving favorites.

Agreed but I would try to delete the dupe 350 favorites in the temp.gpx file, if possible, as the 765T's might have more current data.

What Garmin Favorites?

I don't think there are any Garmin Favorites, just the ones you put in. There are Garmin POIs but not any Garmin Favorites.

You can download Extra Poi

You can download Extra Poi Editor at http://turboccc.wikispaces.com/Extra_POI_Editor . When you download the program if you get message about OCX file missing scroll down on the main page and under troubleshooting you will find the Extra Poi Editor Installer that you will need to download.

Once downloaded hook the 350 up to computer and under file for the Extra Poi Editor program click open Garmin favorites. Now you can go down the list and remove the ones you don't want by double clicking on each one until you see delete. Also you can click edit and then find duplicates.

One other step may come in handy.Make a copy of each gpx file on each unit and save on your computer.Using Extra Poi Editor click on file then open and load the first file.Go back to file and click merge open for the next file. You now have both files showing on Extra Poi Editor.Edit as needed.Save as a gpx file and rename to temp.gpx and load to unit or units.

Edit. What ever process you use it would be a good idea to remove the ones in the unit or units before loading the new ones.Either by hard re-set or using the delete all button.

Thanks to all of you!

My 765T is still in the box so I didn't install any favorites yet.

I like that Extra POI Editor. I do have duplicates and never to be used again locations in the 360. I'll clean them up and download them onto the 765T as per your instructions.

I've got a lot of favorites and the thought of having to do it manually was not a pleasant one.

That's why this is the best GPS Forum on the internet! Thanks again,

Larry

POI Extra Worked!

WooHoo! Opened and edited My Favorites on the 360, saved as temp; plugged in 765T, did a drop and drag from my pc to Garmin, powered down, powered up...my edited Favorites were all on the 765!

Thanks!
