Nuvi 200 issue (on motorcycle)

I have a Nuvi 200 issue that has only occurred a few times, and only when on my on motorcycle, never in the car. I know the Nuvi 200 isn't the gps of choice for a bike, but I keep it dry, and it was cheap

On perhaps 3 occasions, when the unit was plugged in to a 12v accessory socket, the map display disappeared, and the USB-mode background appeared. When I wiggled the plug, rebooted, etc, no change. When I run battery power only, works normally. Power down and ignore it for a while, and later on, the unit will start working again.

My theory is that the voltage may be dropping on the motorcycle battery due to other things being connected at the same time (high-beam headlights, my aux lighting, heated grips, etc). I'm guessing that the USB provides very little power, and that the unit determines which mode (navigation or pc interface) is req'd by voltage.

This theory has not been tested, and I do not have a voltage meter on the bike.

So the questions are:

1) since there is only one plug on the Nuvi, does the unit sense navigation and charge mode, vs USB mode by voltage?

2) has anyone else had the same issue?

3) does my theory make sense?

4) is there an easy way to check voltage road-side?

Thank you in advance.

Probably not

The battery in your Nuvi operates at 3.7 volts and charges at 5 volts (USB is 5 volts), so you'd have to have serious voltage issues on your bike for your theory to be correct...

It may be an issue with vibration, or your cables, power socket, etc.

Are you using the factory

Are you using the factory charger? I use my 255w on my bike all the time with no trouble. I also installed an in-line fuse to the 12v plug in case of any severe overload/shorts (the garmin plug also has a fuse). Good luck

Vibration is not your friend and most likely leading to this. Try to isolate the unit from the vibration the best you can and know that you are probably going to unfortunately continue to experience some issues like this.

The pins in the cable are likely getting vibrated out of place which is leading the unit to think that the USB cable is connected rather than the power cable.
