Nuvi 260W not recognizing my Europe 2010 on SD

Hi,

I recently got a nuvi 260W and bought the 2010 Europe city navigator on SD. Up until a few minutes ago it was happily recognizing the map (I could see it listed under Settings->Map->Map Info), and now my nuvi is behaving weirdly and not recognizing it.

The trouble appears to have started when I created my own first custom POI for some locations I intend to visit and loaded it on with the Garmin POI Loader. The GPL said it did it OK, but when I went into Where To->Extras->Custom POI->Ireland (my POI), it didn't show any locations (says No Matches Found). I also loaded some GPX files I downloaded from this site for walking tours of Dublin and Paris, and they both appear to work fine.

When I couldn't see any of my POIs in the loaded version I went back to the GPL and told it to delete all my custom POIs. It was after this step that the machine started freaking it out. By freaking out I mean that if you turned it off and back on, it would start to boot, then the screen would go dark and it would appear to be off. Eventually I did get it to boot, but now it doesn't see the Europe maps.

BTW, yes, I've loaded the latest software from Garmin, and also taken advantage of their map update for the US. As far as I can tell, everything else is working ok.

Any ideas what to do? What makes a unit stop seeing the SD card? I've tried popping the SD out and back in while it's off, and then turning it back on. So far no luck.

Help!

Have you tried deleting the

Have you tried deleting the custom POI's with the Loader and then see if it works again?

Also, is the map checked in the settings area?

You done the steps that Garmin search support states to do.See below.Do you have a card reader you can plug the sd card into and verify that the maps are still there?

Your GPS device should recognize your new plug and play card automatically. Examples of plug and play cards are:

Travel Guide
Savers Guide
Language Guide

To verify that the device is reading the plug and play SD card:
Select the "where to" from the main menu.
Select the "extras" icon.
Verify that the title of your pre-programmed card is listed.
If the title of the pre-programmed card content is not listed here, remove the card, then plug it back in to the device. Repeat the steps above to ensure the card is being recognized.

If

If it's not even seeing the SD Card, try cleaning the card slot with compressed air smile

Even tried a Master Reset...

I'm not sure, but I think the whole thing may have started when I used the Garmin POI Loader to delete the custom POI's on it. At least that's when the problem seems to have shown up. Has anyone ever heard of the Garmin Loader messing with the preloaded maps on an SD card when you delete custom POIs?

The unit is brand new, so I don't think it's dirty contacts. The Europe SD is brand new too, and was working perfectly AFAIK prior to this. In the current state, if the SD card is inserted, the unit will reboot over and over until it finally comes up in the Garmin lock screen after about a dozen cycles.

less than 5 days until I fly to Europe, and the brand new Europe card takes a dump. WTF?

BTW

The POI file I was trying to load (the one that gave the weird message about not finding anything in it) was this.

53.426078,6.238903, Dublin Airport
53.345442,6.264969, Temple Bar
53.515328,7.341783, Bloomfield Hotel
51.581219,9.038347, Castle Salem
52.93205,6.231253, Jacob's Well

Is there any obvious problem with it in terms of format? Isn't it supposed to be simply Latitude, Longitude, Name?

Steve

Your longitude is east not west

The lat/lon you have listed for Dublin is actually on the coast of the Netherlands. West Longitude has a minus sign in front of the first digit.

But the format is correct lat/lon/poi name.

Thanks, and I've found another clue too

OK, I fixed the minus sign and tried loading my POI again. As before no errors on loading, but I did notice a new and different behavior.

IIRC, previously when I had the SD card in the unit and attached the unit to my laptop with a USB cable, I would only see the unit itself mount, and not the SD card which is inside the unit. Now I see both. Not only that, but I am able to see the files on the SD card from my laptop when it's mounted in this way. Also, I've got an external SD to USB adapter and I can mount the card directly to the laptop and see it's files that way, too.

The files appear to be intact AFAIK. There is only one folder on the SD card, and that's called garmin. In that folder there are two files, one called gmapsupp.img (which is 33.7 Mb), and one called gmapsupp.unl (which is 33 Kb). I copied the whole garmin folder from the SD to my laptop with no problems, but the other weird thing is that the SD mounts as RW. I thought it would be Read only?

Steve

file date.

What is the date on the gmapsupp.img file on your SD? Any chance you could have accidently uploaded map segments from Mapsource and overlayed your Europe maps? I don't have the Europe maps, but 33 MB seems a little small to me for all of Europe (just a guess on my part ... I don't really know).

.

The full EU mapset is approx 1.6 GB. If the only mapset on the SD is 33 MB, it may have been overwritten somehow...either that or the file is corrupted. What's the remaining (free) space on the SD?

All SD cards are read/write unless the physical write protect tab is enabled (slid away from the card's contact edge). microSD cards do not have the write protect tab. They are only write protected by using the micoSD to SD Card adapter.

Problem solved!

I was able to contact the vendor (http://www.rentcell.com/) and the owner called me back last night. He worked with me to check out the card, which it turns out had become corrupted. He offered to either fed-ex overnight to me a new one at his expense, or at my option to help me download a new map file and restore the card that way. I chose to go with the download as it's quicker and I felt very comfortable working on the card that way with him guiding me.

He was very generous with his time (it was after 11PM in NY where he was when he called me) and very helpful. Not only did he take the time to carefully sort out the problem and get me going with the long download (1.7 GB), but he also called back at around 2 AM his time to check back with me to make sure the download had worked and I had been able to successfully restore the SD card and that everything was working perfectly. Not only that, but he also set me up with a everything I need to make another card (one with a license locked to my unit), in case I would like to have a backup. I now feel that I understand some of the technical aspects how the cards work with the map files and license files much better.

Thanks to all of you for your help, and I hope that the next person to run into a problem like this is able to get as good of service from their vendor as I have from mine.

I'm still not certain exactly *how* the card became corrupt, but at least now I've got a backup of the card on my HD and can restore it if need be. I do plan to buy another SD and make a backup with the other license file as well, but that's just for my own peace of mind.
