Avoiding roads by name and areas

Avoiding roads by name and areas.

I have a 855 and just discovered a nice feature with the 805 series Nuvi's. (It turns out to be in the 800 series also.)

I only find reference to this feature in the downloaded 805 series manual.

It is called 'Custom Avoids'. With this feature you can place 2 Marker Pins on individual roads at a starting point and a ending point thus specifying a road/street to avoid when routing. You can also set 2 Marker Pins at upper left and lower right corners ( a rectangle or square ) to keep the Nuvi from routing you through that area.

One caveat is that if you want to avoid a divided road in both directions such as a section of Interstate you have to place the custom avoid in both directions. Eg. a 35 mile section of Interstate 65 you would end up with 2 custom avoids: N65 to N65 and S65 to S65.

I find this single feature making the 855 well worth the extra money spent, besides the voice recognition feature.

P.S. You can have multiple roads and areas avoidance enables at one time. If need be you can disable the avoidance by individual road/area at any time without having to delete it thus allowing you to re-enable the avoidance when needed.

A very handy feature when certain roads will be shut down for a extended period for repairs.

I also have grown to love and use the voice recognition on my 885T most of the time. I now rarely have to ever touch the screen.

Custom Avoid

Is the Custom Avoid feature ONLY on the 8xx series ?

Advoidance

I find that it is mentioned in the 8x0 and 8x5 series manuals.

I tried to look at the 14xx and 16xx series but there is no manuals.

So it looks like only the 8x0 and 8x5 only have this feature.

ROAD AVOID

Sounds like a very useful feature - a route I frequently take had a bridge out for ~6 months. I recently bought a 755t - is there any way to avoid specific routes with the 755t?

Handy feature.

That feature would come in handy for sure with all the road works that goes on.

avoid

You might try using Mapsource to set avoid areas and upload to your unit... this does not work in all units but worth the try.

855 coming soon

I have a Garmin 855 and I love it. Easy to use, I like the Routing feature. When I need to know the distance between two cities and what time will I get there. You will enjoy it.

I don't believe this works on any nuvi, not even the 8x0/8x5 series which actually support road and area avoidances on the unit itself. You have to manually set up the road/area avoidances on the nuvi as I don't believe it will recognize those avoidances created with MapSource and uploaded to the unit. If the unit itself does not support road/area avoidances directly on the unit, you're out of luck. I believe the uploading of road/area avoidances from MapSource will only work within MapSource or on the Quest and Street Pilot series including the 7200...maybe the nuvi 5000.

Avoidance

I think it did work with my 885T as it use to route me down a road which is hard to exit to a highway. I use first used it with my old Street Pilot. when it died i got the 680 Nuvi which did not work with the MapSource avoidance upload. When it died, I got the 885T and uploaded the avoidance which helped... but this was a while ago as I since moved from that area.

Avoidances

How did you download the avoidances into the Streetpilot you had? Also i was wondering if we can set up a map file from mapsource with all the avoidances on it and put it on a SD card if that would work.. I drive for a living and would love to do this but boy would it be time consuming.
