custom speed vs redlight sounds

tried making custom speed and redlight sounds, but not working on my garmin xt (nokia n85)

i have two .csv files, one called s.csv for speed traps and another called r.csv for redlight cams. following the good directions here: http://www.poi-factory.com/node/4360 i made a s.mp3 and r.mp3 (from the http://www.research.att.com/~ttsweb/tts/demo.php site), then used vlc media player to convert the .wav to a .mp3 of 64kbps, mono. i put all 4 files in the same directory and used poi loader to upload it to my garmin xt. i get the redlight txt alerts and default dings ok, but my custom r.mp3 doesn't play. i read somewhere that u can only specify only one mp3 for both speed and redlight, and was wondering if this was true, or if i could use custom sounds for both.

thanks!

Not Correct

You can have an icon file and a sound file for each POI file, in the same folder on your PC for POI Loader to load. This is how I have mine set up:

C:\POIs\Traffic Cameras\
Redlight-Cameras.bmp
Redlight-Cameras.csv
Redlight-Cameras.mp3
Speed-Cameras.bmp
Speed-Cameras.csv
Speed-Cameras.mp3

Note that your operation will be different since your changed filename does not contain the words "Redlight" or "camera"

From the POI Loader Help file:

If the file name contains "redlight", POI Loader assumes all records in the file have proximity alerts with a distance of 400m/0.25 miles.

More from the Help file:

If a file contains "GATSO," "mobile," "SPECS," "safety," "speed," or "camera," but does not have a speed, POI Loader uses a default alert speed of 0, which means you will always be alerted.

thanks for your reply. i

thanks for your reply. i described my filenames as
r' and 's' for simplicity's sake, but my actual filenames are Redlight-Cameras.bmp/csv/mp3 and Speed-Cameras.bmp/csv/mp3. what bitrate did you save your mp3 as? i'm not sure if that's the issue...

I Just Picked One

I downloaded both icon and sound files from this page:

arrow http://www.poi-factory.com/node/6503

I don't remember exactly which ones since I had to rename them to match the .csv filenames. I changed nothing, like bitrate, after I downloaded them. I used them exactly as they were.

One is:

Bit Rate - 96kbps
Channels - 1(mono)
Audio sample rate - 44kHz

The other is:

Bit Rate - 160kbps
Channels - 1(mono)
Audio sample rate - 44kHz

thanks

for the info. btw, is there any way to test these alerts on your garmin without having to go drive around and hit the prox points?

Yes

Simulation mode will do the trick. However, it only runs in real time. There is no way to speed it up. So if it would take you 1 hour to actually drive to the POI you want to test, it will take an hour in simulation mode.

The trick is to first change your current location after entering simulation mode and then picking a destination just past the POI you want to test. Set your current location to just outside the alert distance and make sure you are driving on the road where the POI is located. This will only work if the POI coordinates are within 50-75 feet of the road you are traveling on.

If the POI coordinates are several hundred feet off the road you are traveling on, you will not get the alert - either actually driving the road or doing it in simulation.

Thanks

again for all the helpful info. i have a sinking suspicion that my nokia garmin xt might not support custom sounds for poi (saw a link it doesn't work w/ palm garmin xt's, and couldn't find a straight answer for other devices). will keep trying in meantime. thanks again!
