Garmin POI obsolete

My Garmin POI db shows a Walmart that does not exist anymore. Can it be deleted? If I do, will Garmin push it back on an update?

Pre-installed POIs

Hi rafacq

All the pre-installed POIs on your unit are embedded into the maps. Unfortunately you can't delete or update these POIs unless you update the map.

Cheers

Outdated POIs

Outdated POIs is one thing that makes the POIs here so much better. The users here help each other ensure they have the most current information.

You can find the most recent Wal-Mart (along with Sam's Club) files here: http://www.poi-factory.com/node/9268

Are POIs that are embedded normally updated in Garmin's quarterly map update? If they are this would be a reason for buying the lifetime updates in addition to the street changes and additions.

They Are, But...

First, the good news - yes, the embedded POIs are updated in the lifetime updates, issued up to 4 times a year. Now, the bad news - POI corrections, like street corrections, can sometimes lag by 2 to 5 years.

So that's why I rely on the more up-to-date POI files I find here at the Factory, for specific businesses, locations, etc. that are most important to me.

One user reported it took 14 years to get a pizza parlor moved that was near him. So the built-in POI databases are not necessarily current. All the OEM map suppliers (Navteq, TeleAtlas and others) usually buy databases that have POI addresses from other sources.

Garmin POI obsolete

It would be great if they had some way to delete it b/c its very confusing in my area, with businesses closing.

Mapsource?

Those POIs appear in Mapsource. I wonder if we can edit, delete, add then rebuilt the mapset and upload it back to the GPS. Has anyone tried it? I haven't.

It Would Be Nice, But...

In a perfect world, yes it would be nice. But... we don't live there. wink

There was a Walmart about 2 miles from me that moved 21 miles away 2 years ago. I installed 2010.20 recently. It still shows that Walmart in the old location with the old phone#. The good news is that it also shows a Walmart at the new location.

If I were in an unfamiliar area and was looking for a Walmart (or anything else), I would certainly look to the POI-Factory file first. The folks here contribute constantly to make these POI superior to the built-in POI.

I haven't seen a way. Let me know if you figure it out.

You can report errors to Garmin

You can report errors to Garmin using the following link. I have used this to report a combination of missing street addresses and a cul-de-sac. It asks for an email address but I have yet to get an emailed confirmation after doing this two days ago.

You're right

I just tried it. I can only see POI properties (eg: address) but it won't even let me edit. Would be nice if we could edit, delete, add or move POIs around.
