Loss of traffic info?

So just got my new garmin 755T, and out of the box after a short time being online it showed a traffic icon on the map.

This weekend was adding some POI's, etc. which I don't think have anything to do with it.

But this morning no traffic icon showed up on the whole trip to work.. Major highway in chicagoland (290/355)

I tried powercycle, I reset the power/traffic adapter.. Any ideas why traffic wouldn't show up on a 30 minute trip in a major metro area?

Was there a delay?

The icon will only show up if there is a reported delay. Was the unit receiving the fm signal? (green light)

how do you know if its

how do you know if its seeing the signal? Green light where exactly? I would think in chicagoland somewhere is having delays at 8:30 in the morning wink

before when it worked I could click the traffic icon on the map and do a search and it would show all the different highways in the area and their green, yellow or red, etc.

Now sure how to know if its seeing traffic info? Other than the traffic icon that shows up on the left of the screen.

on my units it only shows up if there is a traffic delay

On my old 760 and my 885T the traffic icon on the map only shows up if there is a traffic delay on the route I'm on.

I had to go to the tools menu and select the traffic icon and it will show all traffic problems and not just what is on your route.

The green icon for traffic

The green icon for traffic will show anytime you are receiving the signal for the free fm traffic.Make sure you have it plugged into the lighter socket good and tight for a good connection. You will see a small red light on the end of the receiver plug when you have a good connection.I had the same problem a while back and found that the plug had worked loose.I now keep the plug position up so I can see the re light.Like you I knew I had received the signal before.

I was thru Chicago last Friday and my 755T advised the traffic issues. The traffic map does not come up until there is a delay on your route. I have noticed that I can be in an area, that I know has traffic reportingm and it can be some time before the icon comes up. I have no explaniton for that other then it appears to have someting to do with FM traffic and when they transmit.

Thanks guys -- I will see if

Thanks guys -- I will see if I get traffic on the way home tonight. I don't recall seeing any traffic in the tools, settings or anywhere other than the icon that shows up on the map.

I look alled over the cord and saw no leds at all (its the one that comes with the 755t), I will take a closer look after work. But was just out for lunch and did not see any.

There should be something that shows that your getting a signal -- even if there is no delays, etc. When I first plugged it in last thursday -- just sitting in my driveway the icon showed up within a few minutes.

The end of the power cord

The end of the power cord that plugs into the power point is where the LEDs are. One shoud go green as soon as the power is turned on and the second one will change color depending on the whether a signal is being received.

If there are no LED's on the plug, then you don't have a Traffic receiver.

You will not see the traffic icon under settings until you plug it into the lighter plug and connected to your gps.

Traffic Icon

I get a traffic icon (and corresponding LED on the receiver) with the unit sitting on a desk - no route programmed at all. I think the screen icon is simply an indication that there is traffic content being received.

Bob

The green icon on the screen

The green icon on the screen will only show when you are in the coverage area.I noticed that when driving down I95 leaving Florida.Lost the icon in Georgia and didn't pick it back up until getting into North Carolina. After getting home and checking the coverage map found that I was outside the zone.

290/355 is the fringe reception area

Based on owning the original TMC traffic cable and later buying the MSN cable, I can tell you that I-355 is pretty much the "fringe area" of reception for the traffic receivers. You will get signal on some days and not others, depending on weather conditions. Most of the time I-355 is too far west for reliable reception. I work near the intersection of 290/294 and that is about where the reception turns fairly reliable.

I know that both companies show coverage maps that are much more optimistic about their coverage area. But after more than a year with both products, several calls to tech support and two cable replacements, that's what the coverage really is like. Generally speaking, the actual coverage area is about half of what they publish. You have a different traffic cable & service than what I have used with my 760 but I doubt that the coverage area will be much different.

While it's not a permanent or acceptable solution, you can increase your reception range by looping as much of the cable as you can over your mirror and visors. You should get the green traffic icon on your screen any time it is receiving a traffic signal. It should turn yellow or red if there are any traffic alerts along your route.

but I got a signal out of

but I got a signal out of the box at my house in a couple of minutes.. And now nothing..

I guess I can drive into the city to check -- but it worked sitting in my driveway (schaumburg) the day I got it -- and now nothing.

And there is no LEDs on the cable to show if your getting a signal or not, etc.

Im on hold with garmin now.

edit: Ok they are shipping a new cable.. Since im right in the middle of the coverage map, and it worked before in my driveway after a couple of minutes, etc. So we will see -- worse case is Im out a few bucks shipping.

Did you go to the

Did you go to the diagnostics screen and see if you are receiving the signals?

Working Now

Ok -- just got the new cable in the mail today.. They had a bit of mix up.. Had to call them on monday, computer glitch and it had not shipped -- should of had it a like a week ago.

Anyway -- the second I used the new cable I got a updating traffic software, it updated and then within a minute or 2 had signal and the icon, could click on it and search and shows all the highways in the area, etc.

So to the person saying that 290/355 is on the verge of coverage and sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Have to say no to that -- sitting in my driveway good 10-15 minutes from where elgin-0hare hits 290/355 got a signal in minute or so.. As per the coverage map my house is well within coverage area.

So faulty cable after all -- now lets hope this one lasts more than the couple of days the original one did wink

I'm in the chicago area as

I'm in the chicago area as well..occasionally I simply 'dont get anything'..

Occasionally, If I flush the tables it will come back.
(diag screen thru the dashboard..then clear the FM tables)

So how do you flush the fm

So how do you flush the fm tables -- exactly? I have seen the diagnostic tables - but don't recall any flush anything in them.

But info like that would be good to know.

Clearing the FM table...

1. From the map screen, press the speed indicator to go to the Trip Computer page.

2. Press and hold the round speedo dial for ~7 seconds

3. Press Next to advance to the GTM Info page.

4. Press Reset

This clears the FM table of the available scanned stations that it uses to select from when locking onto a transmitting FM station. This initiates a re-scan of the stations which may pick up newly available stations in the area you're in.

FM Table Clearing?

Is this something worth doing when you go from one metro area to the next or would the unit automatically go into a scan when it is in an area in which the prior FM stations could no longer be detected?

Is this something that is routinely done by others- or only when it seems that traffic is not being updated?

I am wondering if it is more of a preventative measure or just a potential solution to lack of traffic activity.

I find that when I am coming into the NYC-Metro area from PA/NJ that I almost never get a traffic update even though the Manhattan skyline and all of the major thoroughfares are in sight.

.

The unit should automatically scan/rescan for new transmitting stations for the area. If you're having problems with traffic, it may help to force a total rescan. If you're not having issues, you likely do not need to force a rescan.

It won't hurt anything to force a rescan so do it whenever you feel the need to or to see if it helps with issues you may be having.

nuvi's do not have the rescan FM Table option except for in the diagnostic menu as mentioned.

The zumo 660 however DOES have the option to rescan the FM Table under the unit's Traffic Settings...you don't need to go to diagnostics to do it. You can also choose which traffic provider to use (disabling auto-selection) if you have multiple traffic subscriptions on the unit (like Navteq and Clear Channel)

thanks for the info

I will take a look on way home tonight -- always good to have this kind of info in your back pocket wink

Curious why they don't have a rescan built into the menus on all models, if they have it on one?
