Nuvi 660 message (downloading bluetooth update)

Yesterday, while driving around town, suddenly the Nuvi 660 gave a message that it was downloading bluetooth update. There was a progress bar and after about 2 minutes it was done. How did this occur? Was it downloaded from the satellite? I did note easy and successful pairing with my phone afterwards.

Me Too

I've seen that happen on my 660 as well, but never understood what was happening or how.

Glad I'm not alone

Thought I must have been imagining it.

I wonder if it's like Dish network which downloads stuff off their satellite onto my DVR? Then again, Garmin doesn't own the satellites.

Someone must know!

Isn't that an unauthorized

Isn't that an unauthorized update? without any notification or ability to refuse? can they take data from the devices?

Don't care for this to much.

BT Update

That is strange. I've only had that happen after I've run the webupdater (that had a BT update on it) and installed onto my 660, then the next time I booted up my GPSr in my car I have seen BT update in progress show on the screen. I assumed that my device was just completing the BT update cycle. Can't say I've seen this happening after an extended time from when my device was booted up.

An answer from Garmin

I emailed Garmin about this and just received this response:

Thank you for contacting Garmin International. Have you recently connected your nuvi to the computer and updated the firmware? No data is transmitted from the satellites that can be 'downloaded' to the device, so what likely happened is that the unit was updated recently, and the Bluetooth was initiated at some point, which caused the unit to finish installing the new software at a random time.

I had updated the firmware, but that was maybe 2 weeks prior. So it took awhile to actually update things. Interesting.

I believe Garmin...

...as trying to "download" updates over the sat connections would use an incredible amount of bandwitdth, considering the number of users out there. Also at the power they transmit and the fact that users sometimes lose signals when they enter long tunnels or parking gargaes, it would seem that a sat update would not be reliable enough. All of this and they already have an update function built into the unit (Webupdater).

The question I would ask Garmin would be why it took so long to update after doing the conventional web update. I assume you have used the bluetooth in those two weeks.

Satellites

Are actually very simple. All they do is transmit a signal with their id, and the time the signal left the satellite. Your GPSr uses geometry and some almanac data to calculate your position. As useful as the system is, it is actually fairly uncomplicated. So, no, no downloads of firmware to GPRs...

Further followup

I downloaded updates to some of the voices and another bluetooth update last night, and when I turned on the Nuvi afterwards, the bluetooth update occurred immediately this time.

My did it right after

My did the same right after I downloaded updates online. I just assumed it was finishing the install.

Just a bug

This is a bug in the Nuvi 660, including the current 4.40 firmware and whatever the latest bluetooth software is.

It is just reupdating the last bluetooth firmware that is stored on the gps itself, it did not download anything from the satellites.

Mine does it about once a week, and looses pairing with the cell phones in the process. Quite annoying and it has been going on for the past 9 months since I got my Nuvi.

Just a bug

I have had my Motorola E815 connected with my 660 since dec 07 and have had no problem with any of the fuctions of the bluetooth. You may want to remove everything about your phone from the gps and start over. I use verizon. Does your gps show your phone book from the phone.

I did the same thing

I did the same thing (updated voices and BT update) and when I turned it on it updated immediately. But now my phone isn't working as well as it was before. I have a LG VX9900 that wasn't on the "approved" list buut worked much better before the BT upgrade. Anyone having similar issues?

Garmin 660 Pairing

I have been using the 660 for about a year with no problems pairing with my old cell phone (only for inbound and outbound calls, no contact list). Upgraded to a LG Xenon recently. I have had problems pairing and when I did, the Garmin would disable the bluetooth on the Garmin within 5 - 15 seconds. Garmin sent me a new file for the bluetooth firmware. This worked once and did not bring the cell phone's contact list over. Still looking for a solution.

bluetooth updates

I've had the same problem. If you call tech support they can email you a file that will revert to a previous version of the bluetooth software.
