Good news! It turned out that the Garmin tech support lady whom I talked to earlier today was wrong about the 60 day one-time free download map version locked at time of unit registration. I went ahead to get my free download this evening and I did get the file name Garmin_rmu_cnnant2010_20.dmg file. The file download process took 32 minutes to complete over a Cox line. The file size is 2.35 GB.

I'm installing the map update as of this typing. Good news to share with anyone who's waiting just like me toward the end of the 60 days for the newer map version.

What!!! Garmin tech support not knowing the right answer?? Seems that I've seen that in other threads. Well, that's good news about getting the latest map, I'll try mine early Saturday morning when internet traffic is at a low.

New Maps Reply to dstith76

You do not necessary need to buy a new sd card. The installation overwrites existing files. For example, my download file size is 2.3 GB. I only have 667MB on my 265WT (viewable on the myGarmin site while the unit was connected to the computer.) The map update took 62 minutes to completely copy all the maps and images for North America and Canada without issues.

One thing I did notice though was after the map update all the names in my favorites had some funky characters in the end. But they all went away after I did a hard reset (hold finger on bottom right corner while turning on the unit).

Next thing will be for me to test out and make sure all things still work on my 265WT ^_^

Mexico now included

My download last night took a bit over a half hour. Total installation time including the download, adding the new maps to Mapsource and loading them into my nuvi 750 took almost 2 and a half hours.

I notice that Mexico is now included.

We recently took a drive from New Hampshire to Banff National Park in Alberta and back (a bit over 6,000 miles of driving). Version 2010.1 maps proved to be invaluable although I did find them lacking in current data for more remote areas. My issue with those areas was lack of geographical detail, missing roads, relocated highway rights of way, etc.

Hopefully, the update addressed some of these issues.

Useful for some

I noticed that, too.

Not necessarily

The downloaded installation file is over 2GB as it's been for a while now. But the installed map on the nuvi (with the USA, Canada and Mexico) is under 1.2GB in size for this new update.

New Maps

So much for my having signed up for email notification from Garmin regarding new maps!?! sad

As usual, the members here are more on top of things than Garmin.

Thanks cool

I've owned Garmin GPS Units for YEARS... and signed up for every email notification you can sign up for... and have only received ONE email about an update in my many years as an owner.

Garmin definately needs some improvement in the email notofications department.

It's strange because it should all be automated.

Mexico is NOT included...

They have expanded the listing of the cities by quite a large margin, however detailed street maps are NOT included.

Mpa Detail Locked

Very interested. I've not looked at this before since I don't drive in Mexico, but in checking the past few CNNANT maps in my computer's Mapsource, I see that with past maps, Mexico just appeared as a map without a lot of detail. But this new 2010.2 map, my Mapsourse says "Map Detail Locked" when zooming in a Mexican area. That could mean that the Mexican detail and built-in POIs exist for this latest North America update, but that they require the purchase of the Mexico unlock key to see the detail. If true, then the installation of a new map product for Mexico would not be needed and the application of an Unlock Code is all that needs to be done for folks with the 2010.2 NA map update. Are there any folks out there with the CNNANT 2010.2 map with lifetime Mexico maps that can check this?

Oddity?

Weird but ok so far... anyone else get this?

I went to the myDashboard and it said that my maps were up to date but that my firmware wasn't...

Double checked and my 760s got the reverse, the firmware is 4.8 and my maps are 2010.10

Went to the myMaps and it showed correctly...

Clicked the update firmware, which did nothing and said that I was already on 4.8...

So now the myDash. says everything's up to date LOL how weird is that?

netizen200 was correct the 2.3GB file you download is not the file that goes on the unit. The downloaded file includes a lot of other things besides the map file that gets installed on the unit. The downloaded file includes map install software, MapSource software, Junction View files and so on.

The map file named gmapprom.img that actually is installed is a total of 1.11GB in size and replaces the current map file of about the same size.

Not asking that exactly

rjrsw wrote:

If you give me some locations that were not shown before I could test and see if they are now included with the 2010.20 update. The only one I checked right away was my daughter's because I knew they were not included in the last update and now her subdivision and the new one next to it are both shown.

I also checked the last two residential areas I built in the last couple years that were not shown in the prior 2010.10 maps and both are now included.

I was just curious if you are finding it relatively complete overall and it sounds like completeness is improving. Thanks

Install time

I am confused, everyone says it takes a couple of hours to do the new 2010.20 map update. It took about 25 minutes to download and the actual install of everything took just under 15 minutes. I have the Nuvi 855. I don't have a super fast computer, it's 4 years old. Everything looks fine and says it's all updated. Maybe the 800 series is faster at updating.

I did have a problem with the download, I could not get the download manage to work in Firefox. I tried all sorts of stuff and nothing would work, finally had to give up and run Internet Explorer and that worked. I did see that the download manager wanted to install an Active X file in Internet Explorer. I assume since Firefox doesn't support Active X that that was the problem. Also I did try the manual download and install, that wouldn't work either. Kept giving me an error message and then it would abort.

Got mine today

Updated to 2010.20 and everything went well.

It still doesn't include the new flyover that replaced part of a cloverleaf that we've been driving on for about 6 month's now. But maybe that's too much to ask for. Hopefully it will show up on the next update.

Garmin did a great job with the installer though. Despite having to log onto Garmins website to get my "new" product key number that it generated for my nuMaps Lifetime and make more room on my C: drive for the map (seems I'm always at the top of my hdd), it never kicked me out of the installer. I just went about my business doing the things it requested and when I came back to the installer and hit retry, it continued on from where it left off. I was very impressed by that.

I used my new nuMaps Lifetime that I purchased about a month ago from Amazon.com for $93.00 and free shipping. This is a great deal since my last gps (Brand name Initial)wanted $100.00 for 1 update and it took them over 2 years to even come up with a update!

This has already paid for itself with 1 update. The rest is all gravy. smile

Ernie, - Garmin nuvi 855 / dezl 760

Now I have Mapsource

When I purchased the nuvi 265wt, it did not come with mapsource. I tried to download and open it from the Garmin site but it was an upgrade version. There were several "work arounds" discussed here on POI factory, but it still would not run. Now that I downloaded the new maps, TADA! I have mapsource. The big question is, why wouldn't Garmin give it with every GPS if it gets installed when you download the updated maps????

Downloading problems

My download starts OK, but stalls, it just stops. On the latest attempt, which is still ongoing, it stalled after fifteen minutes 45 minutes ago.

???

Thanks

This morning got 2010.1....

Seems my Son's (refurbished) nuvi 680 received the 2010.1 update just this morning (8-1-09).

I THINK that may be because he had tried to do his one update earlier in the week before the 2010.2 maps were released. (he bought the unit from Tiger Direct as a refurbished one, but when he registered it early July he was toild he could do the one free update.) He had tried to download the update from his laptop, but it kept stalling out. The furthest he ever got was 30% downloaded.

So, I tried it on my desktop, logging into his account. The website showed that it had already been downloaded and asked if I wanted to download it again, which I did. All went well, and the extraction and installation started. When all was said and done an hour or so later, the new map info shows 2010.1.

As I said, I think this may be because he started to update earlier in the week, and the maps then were 2010.1. Since he never completed the installation the first time, I think I'll give Garmin a call on Monday and see if they'll take pity on him and allow him to have the 2010.2 maps. After all, the installation didn't really happen until today.

He's happy just the same, since he didn't think he would even get an update with a refub, but it's worth a call anyway.

I jumped in

I went ahead and installed them on my 755T. I am heading to Detroit tomorrow and will be able to give them a good test driving from Green Bay thru Chicago and over.

I checked my route after install and the lane assists where there, remember that was an issue with the last install. I will sign on when I get to the hotel tomorrow night and let you all know how things go.

I'm from Neenah Wi, but have not been up that way for a few years, but I'll just bet they don't have many junction views while driving on ole' Hwy 41 up in that part of the state. I would assume you'll take I-284 bypass around the city of Chicago, so keep glancing at your Nuvi to see the easy to read pink lane/lanes to be in:)) Same with Milwaukee I'm guessing. Oh, and if you DO have the Nuvi display junction views while passing Neenah, please email me and let me know where.

Have a safe trip,

Dial up, DSL, or Broadband? I would think this could make a huge difference in the time it takes to download that new bad boy map update...

JUnction Views

I know what you mean there are NO Junction Views in Wisconsin that I have come across yet. I am planning taking the Edens and the Skyway to take off some miles. When I go thru the review there are some junction views. I get a view when I am in the Twin Cities once a month.

Hope things are going well in Neenah, take care.

Both my units have USB 1.1. It's painfull!!

I wonder if it really much more expensive for Garmin to manufacture these with USB 2.0 than 1.1?

Other than that, I installed 2010.2 on both units without issue.

Plug in your garmin via USB

Plug in your garmin via USB and check out the my.garmin.com page. There you can find out what map you have. If you recently bought your 755 within 60 days you're eligible for a free map update. I think you have 2010.10 or something like that.

Mexico is detailed, but it is locked...

Detailed street maps of Mexico can be unlocked (I just did it - *as a test only*), but that is beyond the scope of this forum.

Garmin nuvi 350 Lifetime Map Updates NT 2018.10

Hopefully some of the

Hopefully some of the strange, longer, routing from the 2010.10 has been resolved.

I doubt it

Garmin was way behind most in updating to USB 2.0. It's actually been hard to find USB 1.1 devices for quite some time if you had a masochistic inclination and tried. I doubt there's any cost difference in a new design. It might even be cheaper since that's where the market volume is. Take a look at DDR memeory prices. They're much higher than DDR2 since the market moved on.

It's actually a good reason to use an SD card in an external SUB reader although putting the maps on SD instead of the internal memory does add some time to the initial boot up (~3-5 sec). I haven't noticed a difference in map draw times but there might be a slight one.

E-mails

Is anyone getting the e-mails that the new maps are in. I did not, and haven't so far. I have the nüMaps Lifetime and will be updating my Nuvi later this afternoon.

Garmin Nuvi 200

My son bought me Garmin Nuvi 200 for Christmas last year. I had an interesting experience while driving on a newly opened bypass which, of course, was not yet on the Nuvi's map. In addition to repeating "recalculating" for the full tour, it showed me going across fields, and when I returned using the same bypass it showed the same path lines, apparently now in its memory, that it had shown earlier, and if I recall correctly, didn't keep repeating "recalculating".

I had a corrupt file when downloading the 2010.20 update on my first attempt when I bypassed the "download manager" Java applet as I usually do. After this first corrupt file, I chose to actually use the DL manager (which I have never done in the past) and my second download attempt using the DL manager was fine. If you're bypassing the DL manager as I did, you might want to try once more using it (If you haven't already done so).

I also use WinRAR to decompress the downloaded file and then install from the decompressed files rather than simply running the downloaded archive and sitting through the decompression multiple times if there's a problem with the compressed archive.

Aside from the main mapset, mine also installed updates for updated 3D Buildings, Junction View and the Timezone map. I do not have the new file sizes with me here but you can install them yourself if they were not installed for some reason.

1. Download/install either WinRAR or 7zip.
2. Decompress the map update file you downloaded from Garmin using one of the above programs.
3. From the decompressed archive, search for the following files and copy them onto your nuvi drive into the specified folders:

a. 3D Buildings - filename: gmap3d.img to x:/Garmin
b. Junction View - filename: (exact name unknown at this time): xxxxxxxx.JCV to x:/Garmin/JCV
c. Timezone map - filename: gmaptz.img to x:/Garmin

All of the above have been updated since the last 2010.10 map update.

If you have the decompressed files in the archive, they are ready to simply be copied over to the nuvi and do not need any further "installing" or decompressing.
