What is your dl speed? Mine is about 7 mb/s, so it took me about 1 hour to dl. When I had 3 mb/s, it took closer to 2 hrs. I happen to use DSL with a 7 mb/s dl speed but you can buy up to 40 mb/s. At that rate, I suspect it would take only about 15 min. to dl. probably less. Wish I could afford 40 mb/s..lol.

Downloaded the new map in an hour using ATT High speed DSL "Elite". Update went smoothly after I rebooted my Mac, the install program kept inserting an old product key and failed. After reboot, the proper key was inserted. I couldn't pause the install program to type in the proper product key, not sure why I had that problem.
I just finished downloading and installing the 2010.20 map update on my 660. It updated without a single problem.
For the record, this was the amount of free space on my 660 with each of the mapsets I've installed:
New, with 2008 maps - 540MB
After 2010.10 update - 428MB
After 2010.20 update - 394MB
I was able to install both updates without having to delete any files.
1. Backed up all current files on the 660 to my PC.
2. The download took 30 min. over my 10Mb internet connection.
3. Using the free 7-Zip program, I extracted the files in the rar file to an empty work folder which took 7 min.
4. Finally, I ran the Setup.exe file from the \Windows sub-folder where I extracted the contents of the rar file. It took a little over 1 hr, 45 min. to complete the install (install MapSource on the PC & upload the map file to the 660) due in most part to the slow USB 1.1 port of the 660.
The 2010.10 map update installed version 6.15.5 of MapSource on my PC. The 2010.20 map update installed version 6.15.6 of MapSource.

Both the Garmin 785T and the dash installed GPS in the Mercedes previously insisted that I turn right a block before the street on which I live, follow the road that makes a sweeping curve to the left, and then turn right on the street that I really want. After installing the 2010.20 map update, Karen now takes me directly to the proper street for one right turn, thus eliminating the stupid dog leg. Now, if I could update the car unit maps without buying another DVD that incidentally costs more than the 785T unit and the lifetime maps combined, I would feel a lot better.

Be aware that updates to businesses can take 7 - 10 years before they make it into the map updates.
The Nello's Pizza on Southern Ave. in Tempe moved from the south side to the north side of the road 13 years ago (I asked them yesterday). The 2010.10 map shows them on the south side, the new 2010.20 shows them on the north side.
Exactly how does this update process work... and are there different ways to perform the update ?
Do you hook up the GPS you want to update to the USB and go to "MyGarmin"... or do you download the update to your PC and then install it onto your GPS, or does the update load to your PC and then into Mapsource and you unlock it thur Mapsource ?
Or does it load onto your GPS and you then push it to Mapsource ?
I sorta think everything goes into Mapsource first and THEN you unlock it, but I don't know for sure.

The update file will update the nuvi and MapSource at the same time.
Since these units have the City Navigator maps preloaded, the update installer is designed to overwrite the preloaded maps. It's not necessary to update MapSource first and then send the updated maps from MapSource as you would with a handheld unit where the maps weren't preloaded.

"The 2010.10 map update installed version 6.15.5 of MapSource on my PC. The 2010.20 map update installed version 6.15.6 of MapSource."
MapSource is not needed to update maps on the GPS. The map update file you download has its own installer program. When I bought my GPS, it didn't even come with MapSource. I didn't know what the program was until I read about it here. I used my GPS and updated it many times before I ever had the MapSource program.
MapSource is installed as a result of updating the maps on the GPS. It is not used or even needed to update maps on the GPS.

Hi Smiley, Just downloaded 2010.20 maps on my 265wt Garmin. It took 6 hrs. I found out that we need to shut off anti virus programs before installing. You might know that I am not computer savvy!
No email notification for me. Found out when I connected my 765T to my Netbook. Update took about 45 minutes and another 20 to install. No problems whatsoever.
A small error taking the freeway exit to my home was corrected (after being on the access road for about 300 ft unit thought I was back at the freeway and did a recalculation, once I made it to the traffic light, it realized I was at the access road and recalculated again - now works fine).
Doest anyone know what USB version the 765T has?
Also last night my 765T took two software upgrades. Anyone knows what they are? Is there anywhere to read about version releases?
Bieng a new user, anyone knows what CNNANT stand for?

If it took just 20 minutes to install the new map, your nuvi has a USB 2 interface. The older nuvis were USB 1.1 with much slower transfers. Not only will this speed your future map updates, but if (as you should) you backup your nuvi onto your computer hard disk, things will go faster as well.
CNNANT = City Navigator North America NT, where NT uses a slightly different file structure than the older non-NT updates. New nuvis use the NT version. The map includes the USA, Canada, some of the Carribean--and for the latest update, it apparently also includes Mexico and some of Central America--but requires an additional unlock code to view and use (both for your nuvi and in Mapsource on your computer).
Did you use WebUpdater or My Dashboard to get the updates?
Do you remember what was updated each time?
My guess is that the final update required an earlier update, so that you had to have the first installed before the 2nd was seen. If you check for updates somewhat frequently, I doubt that you'll see future double updates. I gather that this double update was the first time you updated your nuvi after purchasing it and that it had been some time between the old software as came with your unit and the newer updates.
I used WebUpdater. I had done an update check just a few days before, and there were no software upgrades, only the 2010.20 map! So that is why I was surprised by the double download.
I purchased the lifetime maps from Garmin yesterday and updated to the latest maps. For those of you who bought the lifetime maps from Amazon.com, Iwanted to ask if they offered the download version or only the gift-card version? Too late now, but I have a $40 gift certificate at Amazon and it would have gone to good use if I was able to get immediate satisfaction by purchasing a download version of the lifetime maps.
Regarding the web updater double update. Version 5.10 of the software also updated the GPS software to v.3.10b. Perhaps that update needed to happen before v.5.30 could be applied?

Pay the extra money and have them ship the DVD and an unlock code for the one device you can install it on.

Updating Maps
Exactly how does this update process work... and are there different ways to perform the update ?

Hmm.. didn't know that was an option.
If it makes any difference I have the numaps "Lifetime" subscription. Will they still ship out a DVD in that case ?
$10

It's a $10 (US) option to get the DVD. It should be on the download page.
I would make a suggestion to Garmin though. Do a check to see if the current version of Mapsource is installed and if it is, why reload?

Do you hook up the GPS you want to update to the USB and go to "MyGarmin"... or do you download the update to your PC and then install it onto your GPS, or does the update load to your PC and then into Mapsource and you unlock it thur Mapsource ?
Or does it load onto your GPS and you then push it to Mapsource ?
I sorta think everything goes into Mapsource first and THEN you unlock it, but I don't know for sure.
How did you all do it ?

The update file will update the nuvi and MapSource at the same time.
Since these units have the City Navigator maps preloaded, the update installer is designed to overwrite the preloaded maps. It's not necessary to update MapSource first and then send the updated maps from MapSource as you would with a handheld unit where the maps weren't preloaded.

See my post about half way back up on this page.

2010.20 updates
Hi Smiley, Just downloaded 2010.20 maps on my 265wt Garmin. It took 6 hrs. I found out that we need to shut off anti virus programs before installing. You might know that I am not computer savvy!

CNNANT 2010.2
Thanks in advace!

PS--Welcome to the POIFactory!
Thanks CraigW
Appreciate the information.
Anyone can comment on the two update cycle?

Anyone can comment on the two update cycle?
Did you use WebUpdater or My Dashboard to get the updates?
Do you remember what was updated each time?
My guess is that the final update required an earlier update, so that you had to have the first installed before the 2nd was seen. If you check for updates somewhat frequently, I doubt that you'll see future double updates. I gather that this double update was the first time you updated your nuvi after purchasing it and that it had been some time between the old software as came with your unit and the newer updates.
WebUdater
I used WebUpdater. I had done an update check just a few days before, and there were no software upgrades, only the 2010.20 map! So that is why I was surprised by the double download.
Amazon and web/software updater
Lifetime Maps
I purchased mine from Amazon.com and the only option I had was the credit card size card.
Thanks
Thanks for confirming, makes me feel better about paying retail price since I wanted to update straight away.
