StreetPilot i5 POI memory storage

 

Is there anyway to increase POI the memory of i5? I think it is 2mb now. Is there anyway to have it read POI info from a card? Thanks.

Nope, The Micro SD slot is

Nope, The Micro SD slot is just for adding Maps,
You have to load poi's into the internal 2MB memory.
Don't worry though poi's are very small in size, You can load thousands into your unit.

What about removing some of

What about removing some of the pre-loaded POIs? I want to add a POI file that is pretty large.

Street Pilot I5 memory storage

I entered a lot of POI information into a 1 gb micro sd card and it seems to be accepted by the I5. They all appear on the screen when in the custom poi setting. Will have a chance to actually check performance over the weekend, if it's still an issue.

By the way, how did you determine the internal memory is 2 mb?

I was told that that the

I was told that that the internal memory was 2mb. To check, I looked on my computer in the POI directory I set up to see how much the POI files took up. It said 1.55mb. So I added some more to the directoy and it said 2.75 which was too much for the internal memory because it gave me an error message saying the memory was used up(or something to that effect) when i tried to load them on the unit. So 2mb seems to be correct. That is good news if the card will work for POIs. Let us know!

Just curious, did you load them directly onto the card from your computer, or did you do it through the POI Loader program with your device attached via USB? I tried using the PIO loader with my I5 connected to the computer (and a 1gb card inserted in the I5) and there is still not enough storage for all my POIs.

I have an e-mail that was just recently sent to me from Garmin Tech Support to verify. The c320,c330,c340 and i series can not read custom POIs from SD card. I also found out that these units have an internal memory of 2MB's. Below is the original e-mail I received. Hope this helps everyone.

I will be happy to assist you with this issue. The StreetPilot c320,c330,c340 and i series units do not support Custom POIs that are loaded to the SD Card. You have 2MB of internal memory to load Custom POIs to. At this time I am not aware of an update to allow Custom POIs to be recognized from a SD Card on these units.

I'm Confused

I'm new to this GPS/POI environment and I may be missing subtle distinctions in definitions, but my results seem to be at odds with the guidance of others re this thread, including the cited Garmin rep who made the point that there is no micro SD custom point capability, only internal POI recognition.

Please bear with me on this long note and help me see where I am being led astray.

1. I downloaded a POI file (ham repeaters along the east coast) and put it in a folder on my computer. I selected ham repeaters since that is not a class of POI preloaded into the I5.
2. Using POI Loader and SD card reader/writer I downloaded the repeater info into a 1 gb micro SD card. (18 files; 804 kb)
3. Back at the I5, when no micro SD is inserted the "where to" menu has all categories from ex. home to ...... including food, hotels,and more with a submenu from food to auto services.
4. However, when the micro SD is inserted and the I5 is energized, the "where to" menu/submenu following food,hotel and more starts with an additional heading called "custom points".
5. Selecting "custom points", all of the ham repeaters on the micro SD card are displayed. If one is selected the menu choices of start navigating;show map; or show nearby are available. If navigate is selected the I5 will calculate routing to that point.
6. I thought that was the way regular POI's (not marked as red light or speed) would operate.
7. Please help me understand what I'm missing. Thanks.

Not 100 percent sure but I

Not 100 percent sure but I think that since you never added any custom POI to your unit, it filled the expandable POI memory with the custom POI from your sd micro card. Once the 2mb is filled, you probably won't be able to add anymore POI from sd micro cards...just maps.

When I remove

When I remove the micro SD all custom POI's disappear and unit is back to its virgin state. Add a different micro SD with its custom POI's and they are accessible. Remove that card and we are back to a clean unit again.

It appears to me that custom POI's are able to be loaded onto a micro SD and they reside there without being transferred to the i5 memory.

If another i5 owner was able to try to duplicate this we might be able to get to the bottom of the puzzle.

It Works!

Apparently you can add POIs to the micro card and have the i5 recognize them. Bare with the long post, but I wanted to try to explain everything I did. It is very similiar to what Tedi5 has said above. First here is what I have as far as hardware and software. My desktop computer has one of those multi-card slots built in for removable storage cards. I have a transflash card that goes into a standard size SD card adapter. I have the most recent version of the PIOLoader software I downloaded from Garmin. I had orginally attached the i5 to the computer via the USB cord and the PIOloader would automatically start up and get the PIO info from the directory I had set up on my computer. But do not attached the i5 if you want to put data on the card. If you attach the i5 to the computer, then it only recognizes the internal memory of the i5. It does not recognize the card inserted into the i5 (or at least I couldn't get it to). I set up a directory on the computer as usual with "places" "redlights" and "speed" directories under a main directory called "PIO Files". All of my PIO data is in the "places" directory. I do not have any "redlights" or "speed" data yet. I put the card into the computer. I then start PIOloader from the computer menu. It starts and automatically recognizes the card in the computer as a device (on mine its "removable drive g"). I then click next and it transfers the data from PIO directoy on the computer to the card. It takes a few seconds and then its done. I then put the minicard into the i5, and start it up. The files are now under "Custom points". I have not had time to test it out, but I clicked on the show map of a few and they look correct, so I would think that they would work. Hopefully this is helpful. I just knew there had to be a way to utilize the card for POIs. Thanks to Tedi5 for reposting or I might have given up. Now what I cannot figure out is how to remove the custom PIOs that I had on the i5's internal memory. They are still there, so there are copies of some of the POIs I previously installed and what are on the card. If anyone can help on that. If not I can live with it. Again hope this helps.

Using POI Loader, load a single file onto the GPS. This will replace all of the other custom POIs as POI Loader replaces all files with the new group it is loading. You might want to include the Red Light Cameras internally, because if it works like the c530, the speed of finding the POI for an alarm is faster internally than from the external card.

Thanks. I now have some redlight and some speed trap POIs on my computer in directories under my main POI directory as "speed" and "redlight." I used the PIOloader to tranfer these from my computer to the unit. But I can only get the speed trap POIs to load onto the i5 unit. Is there a difference between a redlight camera and a speed trap camera? I read on here where I needed to set up three subdirectories (speed, redlight, and places). Is this correct? I assumed I put those type in those directories. Can I just dump the redlight POIs into the "speed" directory? If I try to transfer the "redlights" it overwrites the "speed trap" POIs. Am I doing something wrong.

Create one main directory

Create one main directory for your POI's and put ALL of your POI files in there at the same time and keep them there. You can create subdirectories if you want .

Then transfer ALL of them at the same time. You need to do this each time.

There are ways to work around this by renaming the poi.gpi once it is created on your GPSr, but start with this method first.
