Fall

Anyone know of the best time of the year to do the route 66 trip? Also to visit the new england states. (Spring, Summer, Fall) Thanks

Don't know about RT.66, but I do know New England. The best time to visit is after the 2nd week in September till the end of October. The kids are all back in school and all the colleges are open. In western MA. it is apple picking time, around Harvard Sq. is a great people watching area. Anywere along the coast is very senic and not many people around. The leaves start turning around late September and peak in southern NH and MA around 2nd week in October. I could go on and on about the Fall in New England. It is what out a doubt my favorite time of the year.

Spring or Fall. Before Memorial Day or after Labor Day. There are several reasons. Crowds, there are less during these periods. Heat. From Oklahoma west, it can get stinking hot in June July and August.

I would drive it in the fall, probably late September/early October. The weather will have cooled in the desert and heartland and you may start to get some color in the highlands. Depending on the direction, using I-70 through the Rockies as one leg is always worthwhile.

As to New England, the time of year depends on your interests. Spring is probably the most unpredictable as far as the weather.

Leaf Peeping

If you are planning to hit New England in the fall for the leaf colors, the roads through the areas will be extremely crowded with "leaf peepers." I suggest doing most of your "peeping" during the week.

One place to put on your agenda is Bar Harbor, ME. Breakfast at Jordan's in Bar Harbor for their Blueberry Pancakes is a local tradition (and for good reason).

As you will be taking Rt 66 east toward Chicago, driving along the southern edge of the Great Lakes is always good sightseeing. That time of year will also be apple harvest so lots of chances to stop at roadside fruit stands.

As you have time, check the various NE states starting with PA and write or at least check the web for scenic routes and events.

New Guy

Hey there! I'm the new guy and wanted to say hello. I'm in Sioux City, Iowa and can't wait to start geocaching and finding new POI. They have a bunch of new red light camera that were installed last couple of weeks. How do I add them to the database?

Michael,

There are a couple of ways to get the red light files from here - and yes they do include the new ones (and all the others) in and around Sioux City. You can stay active on the board until you receive your windmill badge, or you can pay to join the site. See the tab at the top labeled red light cameras.

Have fun, and welcome aboard!
