gpi files

OK, been doing a bunch of reading, playing with my new GPS, and generally trying things out. Getting some mixed results it seems. Anyway, I understand the difference between CSV and GPX files, but how do I handle files I download (like from the Garmin site) that are in the GPI format? Do I just manually transfer them over to my GPS, or do I need to allow the POI Loader to do this too?
Additionally, I am a bit confused about creating custom POIs, for example, do I need to allow the loader to load them on my GPS, or can I just create a custom POI, say one with all the eateries I'm interested in, allow the loader to convert them to a GPI file and save on my computer, and then manually load it into my GPS, so that I can maintain some semblance of order (having a few different POIs, like 1 for food, stores, travel, etc.)not only on my computer, but within my GPS? I'm sure I've read some of this, but I've read too much now, and every time I try a change, I'm not sure I've succeeded in doing what I want.

POI Loader will not load gpi files. You should copy them to your unit's \Garmin\POI folder (or subfolders under it). Remember, if you have multiple gpi files, they must either have different names or be in separate subfolders.

if you are using POI Loader to create a gpi file, you might as well specify to POI Loader to place it onto the unit unless you want to rename it on the computer before copying it over. Rather than creating separate gpi files, most people elect to just reload all their POI files whenever they add or update a file. This method of organization is best explained by Motorcycle Mama in http://www.poi-factory.com/node/8674 .

Think I did it right

Charles, your email helps a bunch... I did good until step 10...lol grin Perhaps I should clean out my added files to the GPS, and start over...
I got files with the gpi extension from Garmin as this: Garmin_schools_red_speed_alertsPOI.zip file. I believe it was from Garmin anyway. When unzipped, it contains several files with the gpi extension within them. I DID do a copy over to my GPS, insuring that the files were all titled differently. Same for the other sub-folders I'd created such as food, travel, hotels, etc. I had let the loader make the POI file within each sub-folder on my computer, then re-named appropriately and copied/pasted them to my GPS.

Bentbiker, your link to motorcycle mama's explanation was great!!! Just clicked on it, and it shows (more or less) what I have been trying to set my system up to look like...
This place is great!!!!
