Werskine - what exactly are you looking for in a software program?

Because the ExpertGPS price of $60 seems pretty steep when you can get Extra_POI_Editor for free or GeePeeEx Editor for $18. Combine one of those programs with MapSource (which you can get for free) and you have everything you need to create complex gpx files and routes.

I've used ExpertGPS for years

I bought it years ago when there really was nothing else like it available. I still use it, but mostly for maintaining records of hiking tracks.

ExpertGPS is quite powerful, though some of the deeper dialogs in the user interface can be a bit of a challenge to figure out from time to time. But the author's support has always been top-notch. Ultimately, though, I think you're going to find it's less vehicular-oriented than you probably want.

Let me suggest you take a look first at EasyGPS (http://www.easygps.com/) which is also made by TopoGrafix. It's a freeware, limited functionality version of ExpertGPS, but it will give you a good feel for how the paid program works and what it can do.

wow

sounds great, i do a ton of hiking and got a new hand held unit and wanted a better way to scout things out before i set foot on the trail or hunting spot, this was something i found but seemed a bit overwhelming to use..

What Felix Krull said...

I bought it and used it exclusively as I first got interested in GPS/POI information. Now, because most of the stuff I do is automobile-related rather than hiking, I have pretty much switched to Extra_POI_Editor.

Exactly what do you want to do with it? I use EasyGPS to load waypoints both in a hand held and a 2820. If I want to scout out an area and mark some waypoints I use Streets and Trips to get a waypoint for the general area, then go online and use flash earth to get down to the finer points. I have even used flash earth to find a geocache without using a GPS

Anytime you have a 50-50 chance of getting something right, there's a 90% probability you'll get it wrong.
