nassau county NY (Long Island) announces its 50 new red light cameras today

Nassau County NY Legislature announced today its list of 50 new red light cameras to be installed. They say they will be placed on high risk intersections and bring in 4 million in revenue. I have the list of intersections and will create new poi files today to be uploaded to the red light file. All cameras are expected to be operational by the end of september.

Newsday just reported that Nassau will be installing cameras at 7 more sites.

These cameras are going up

These cameras are going up fast. One went up in one day on an intersection I travel through every day; Old Country road and Post Ave.

.

I've seen a few new RLCs pop up lately, need to update my file!

Yesterday I saw an old college buddy I hadn't seen in years - he works for Nassau County on the RLC project. One of the things he told me was that not only didn't Nassau shorten yellow light timing, but in general has longer yellows - they use prevailing speeds to set yellow times, rather than posted speed limits. And as anyone who drives on Long Island will tell you, nobody drives at the speed limit. wink

The last update to the county's Red Light Camera list (see http://www.nassaucountyny.gov/agencies/TPVA/rlc-intersection...) was around March 17, 2010. There are currently 26 cameras listed. Still wondering when the other 24 are going in and where. Two or three of the original intersections were retracted when they were discovered to be under the jurisdiction of villages instead of the county.

At Least One

Aardvark wrote:

One that I noticed today was at the intersection of Glen Cove Road and Westbury Avenue in Carle Place. Had the cameras installed and signs posted. I was down through there a week or so ago, and didn't see it, so it may not be active yet and thus not on the county list. It may be part of the next crop of cameras they are installing.

NY RLC

Even if the percentage of drivers who trigger red light cameras were way way lower in NY than anywhere else, the sheer volume of motorists would continue to make the red light cameras extremely profitable for the municipalities...and we know what the motivation is here!

Hate the d**n things

Almost got rear-ended at an intersection this past week. I was at that transition point where I was going a little under the speed limit and was close enough when it turned yellow that it was uncertain. I didn't want to risk a ticket; I didn't slam on the brakes, but braked quickly and the guy behind me, who presumably didn't know about the cameras and was going to run the light (I doubt he could have made it even if I'd tried) almost slammed into me.

Warning signs

I was surprised that Nassau County put up signs alerting the driver to the camera. I had never seen that before.

Warning Signs

At least Nassau County is letting people know exactly where the cameras are located. Fair warning is given to the driver.

Another New One

Saw another new RLC today - Glen Cove Road and IU Willetts Road. Again, no updates on the county web site, so I don't know if it is active yet. They may be waiting to install a new batch and turn them all on at the same time.

I don't know if they are active yet. The county has kept their web site up to date, but as yet they have not added these locations. If I can get confirmation that they are active, I'll pass it along.

That is definitely a location that can use it. Impatient folks having exited the NSP and heading north usually jump that light. I am surprised that light is in Nassau County jurisdiction. I thought that was Old Westbury. They usually patrol around there.

New Locations Posted

The Nassau County web site has been updated with the new locations. Eight more have been added but two are dupes so really there are seven:

Carle Place: Glen Cove Road and Westbury Avenue
East Meadow: Hempstead Turnpike and Merrick Avenue
East Meadow: Hempstead Turnpike and Newbridge Road
Lake Success: Lakeville Road and Marcus Avenue
*Lake Success: Lakeville Road and Union Turnpike
*New Hyde Park: Lakeville Road and Union Turnpike
Old Westbury: Guinea Woods Rd/Glen Cove Rd at I U Willets
Uniondale: Jerusalem Avenue and Uniondale Avenue

* = duplicate location-border of two communities

The problem with red light

The problem with red light camera is they can capture you as you are turning (by mistake). It's no always cut and dry,, hey you went through a red light, you get a ticket.

New Locations Posted

Aardvark's locations have been geocoded with Google Earth and sent to Miss POI. We still need to know which direction the cameras are viewing. All intersections are north-south and east-west except:

Lakeville Road goes southeast and northwest at Union Turnpike and Union Turnpike goes northeast and southwest at Lakeville Road.

The local newspaper Newsday's website has a list of 55 locations, but half of them are bogus! Pay no attention to it. News in the print newspaper has accurate locations.

I can't drive after shoulder surgery! A friend was driving me to the hospital near Lakeville Road and Union Turnpike. We had just passed the camera at New Hyde Park Road and Union Turnpike and I told her to be careful of the cameras as they are all over this neighborhood. We approached a light with no camera which turned red, and she slammed on the brakes. A Chevy suburban was right behind us and narrowly missed hitting us in the rear by passing on the right shoulder, blowing the light and speeding away! At least we were close to a hospital!

Changes

Nassau County updated its website. Both "Lake Success" entries have disappeared with the entry:

Lake Success: Lakeville Road and Union Turnpike

The one duplicate entry for New Hyde Park remains:

New Hyde Park: Lakeville Road and Union Turnpike

I suspect the elimination of the Lakeville Road and Marcus Avenue entry may have been an accident. They did some name updates such as the Old Westbury entry changed to "Guinea Woods Road/Glen Cove Road and IU Willets Rd" and it is possible somebody hit the delete key one too many times.

I assume that you are saying that people who have come to the red light. Stopped. Then, made a legal turn-right-on-red maneuver and were ticketed.

A rolling turn-right-on-red maneuver is usually illegal.

What did you mean by "by mistake"?

Web Site Disappeared

The Nassau County site that listed all active red light cameras at http://www.nassaucountyny.gov/agencies/TPVA/rlc-intersection... has disappeared. There is no reference to camera locations on the main Nassau County Red Light enforcement page. I have written the webmaster to find out what is going on but I suspect they working to make the information less public. Probably not getting enough revenue so keeping new locations quiet is probably the plan.

What he means by that is something I hear all the time. Here in my home state of NY you can make a right on red after stopping in most counties (it is posted where you can't). So you assume right on your first paragraph. People got ticketed anyways. Some people even get ticketed because they stopped a little "too far" into the sensor field, even though they didn't cross or make a right turn. That's what is called a mistake, something a human officer won't make if he is standing there.

I see from the FL thread you like to defend the use of cameras and demand people give supporting evidence on why they don't want cameras. Don't bother when people got tickets unjustly or have friends/family who got one. These things are just revenue generators, plain and simple, with no interest whatsoever in the public's safety. People who get burned once won't be making a right turn again (on red, to play it safe) or slam their breaks when they see yellow and most likely cause an accident if you have an idiot following too close.

Now explain how a camera can make the distinction between a legal right turn and a "rolling" turn. I bet a police officer can. Cameras are appealing to towns because they see revenue without a salary/insurance/benefits/etc. paid to an officer. Companies are mandated by law to make revenue for the shareholders NO MATTER WHAT. See the conflict of interests there? Are you aware of the current economic collapse because of greed from the companies/"banksters"?

I'll take an overworked cop with a bad attitude over the rigged camera anytime.

Let us hope that the Nassau County RLC page is up and running soon. However, its absence could be explained by adverse publicity today over a lawsuit against red light cameras by a former judge. Website Disappeared

The Nassau County red light camera locations page has really disappeared along with links to it that had been part of other pages. After looking carefully at the red light camera pages, there is no mention of locations or warning signs near the cameras.

When the RLC program was first announced, warning signs were to be posted, and the locations were to be declared in press releases and on the web page for a "deterrent effect." The County must now be following the advice of the RLC vendor to forget deterrence and maximize profit.

Has anyone noticed if warning signs have also disappeared?

From now on, we must discover new locations ourself. They can only install cameras at 20 more locations. This is a number we can easily handle. Let's get out there and report them to Miss Poi! idea

dobs108

People's Opinion of Newsday

There are many who share Double Tap's opinion of Newsday, but it may have become worse since the Cablevision Dolans bought the paper. Moose, it's not your Newsday anymore!

My gripe is that Newsday has a professional website that could be used to provide links to news of interest to POI-Factory contributors, but the links quickly disappear since a paid subscription is required to view "old" news.

I can't post the story in a forum verbatim, by cut-and-paste, for copyright reasons, so you all must do without. Newsday could increase traffic at its site by scrapping the paid subscription and make money via the ads on the site. They never imagined that people all over the US and Canada (and beyond) might want to read their stories!

Long Beach, NY cameras?

I know that there are several cameras on Long Beach Road through Island Park and Oceanside but I am not at all aware of any cameras slated for the City of Long Beach.
Riding through Long Beach with the GPS on (last week's files in it) did not trigger any warnings through Long Beach- at least on the roads I traveled.

That is right as of today. Since Long Beach is a city it is unlikely any red light cameras will be put there because a revenue-sharing arrangement would have to be worked out between the City of Long Beach and Nassau County. Remember, this is about generating revenue, not about safety.

There are several streets I can think of in Long Beach where speeding has contributed to drivers running red lights on a regular basis, but these locations will continue to be covered only by police officers.

Long Beach residents should be alert for the several cameras on the streets to the north, but outside city limits.

Remember also that the county has pulled the plug on its red light camera location web page, and has apparently stopped posting warning signs before the cameras. That puts the responsibility on all of us to report these locations to Miss Poi. If you are wondering whether a camera you see has already been reported, never mind - just report it.
