How to get GPS coordinate from a SAVED Favorite Location

I wonder if any of the Garmin Nuvi users can help me with the following question. I have a 255W unit and after seeing all the wonderful POI files available, I wanted to start building a POI file of my own with parking areas for bicycle rail trails in Michigan. I've seen how to build the csv file and add icons, voice, etc and I've gone into Google Earth to get the Lat Lon GPS coordinates for some of my POI stops. A few of those were blury in the satelite image and I drove to the locations and saved the spot as a Favorite so I could later use that location in my csv file. Now I have the location stored as a Favorite but I can't figure out how to get the 255W to show me the GPS coordinates. Does anyone have any suggestions for me????

Connect it to a computer

Assuming the 255W shows as a storage device when you connect it to your computer, you can see all your Favorites in the X:\Garmin\GPX\Current.gpx file (where X is the drive letter of your device). Open it with a text editor like Notepad. Near the top of the file, after the metadata section, you'll start seeing <wpt> tags with lat and lon values. Each <wpt> will have the name (and description) of your favorite.

Just as jefferbob

Just as jefferbob states.Hook gps up to computer and go to the Garmin folder click on it and look for gpx folder and click on it.You will see all the favorites there. Now go to http://turboccc.wikispaces.com/Extra_POI_Editor and download it. Download your files to turbocc and you will see all the information. You can save them as a gpx or csv file and also make any modifications or add information to them.

Thank You. I knew that had

Thank You. I knew that had to be a way to get the coordinates but I kept trying to get them from my screen. I'll give your suggestions a try.

Thanks.

A much less elegant method

If you don't mind using pencil and paper instead of your computer, here is an alternate way:

When you drive to your location and save it as a favorite, also press "My current location". The NUVI will display the coordinates. Write down the coordinates and when you get home enter it in your csv poi file.

Of course you could instead take a "screen shot", but if you have a lot of them you could easily get confused as to which is which.

I have seen the future and it is now!

.

Just to add to jgracey's suggestion, you can put the unit in simulator mode and then set your location to the favorite. Then press Where Am I and it will show you the coordinates.

I was just surprised that I

I was just surprised that I couldn't get the GPS coordinates from one of the screen views when I looked at my "Where To" files. I know that I could have used the "Where Am I" function and written the coordinates on a paper, but it seemed so much easier to "Save" it and get the coordinates when I got home. I guess nothing is easy.

sire1234 - You can.

There is a way to get coordinates from Where to.

Select Where to>Coordinates. The displayed coordinates are your current location (Use - for W in csv files).

This is also where you select your format. I use
degree decimal h ddd.ddddd degrees

Pressing and holding the Signal Strength indicaator (top left on Where to screen) also displays coordinates (along with satellite info).

Sire1234.I would as I

Sire1234.

I would as I suggested above use http://turboccc.wikispaces.com/Extra_POI_Editor .You said your intent was to build a file for later use. This will allow you to save the favorites you want as a csv or gpx file and add to the file later on as you get more locations.

Non-Nuvis?

Is there a way to do this with a C340, which doesn't show up as a storage drive?

?

Did you try Hawk's technique? That doesn't require a computer.

On the c340 on page 9 of your manual.Touch where to,my locations next screen touch save at bottom and last screen touch yes to save current location. Now edit that favorite to give it a name for later reference. You can use mapsource or EasyGps to transfer your favorites. Then you can save the file for developing a file for custom pois.

Are you sure that both of these programs can transfer from a unit that can't be seen as a storage drive?

Yes.Use to do it on EasyGps when I had my c340 and others reported doing with Mapsource.

Well, I used all the help

Well, I used all the help from your ideas and I now have the GPS coordinates from the saved Favorite locations. I downloaded the POI Editor file (had to use the version which gave me the setup as well), and I was able to pull the info from my GPS. I have updated my csv file and happily building my own POI file. Incidently, I've learned so much from this experience that I've actually modified the "Combined Rest Area" file. I had setup my alert for about 3 miles (to give me a chance to decide if I needed to "Rest"), but I would get the alert for a south bound rest area when I was heading north. I've since broken that Combined Rest Area file into 5 separate files - NB, SB, EB, WB, and both. I've then used the http://www.research.att.com/~ttsweb/tts/demo.php web site to create my announcement (e.g. "Rest Area Ahead South Bound") so I know if I need to think about pulling over or "hold it" and keep driving. Thanks everyone for your help and suggestions.

Great Idea
