Stolen Garmin GPS from garage

Lately it seems that theft is increasing every where. My Garmin was stolen from my own home garage in the afternoon a few days ago. It was fortunate only the GPS but now I have to close the garage at all time. sad

Thieves :(

Sorry to hear Jeff. I hate a thief!! After 17 years in Law Enforcement I have learned you have to make it as difficult as possible for thieves to get to or access your possessions. It's a sad state of affairs I know, but it is reality.

Really sad

Sometimes I wonder about our present civilization. Not too many years ago it was unthinkable that anyone would try to cause an airplane to crash. For years we didn't even know where the key to the unlocked front door was. We knew that the milkman had a key to the back door.
Anyway, sorry to hear of Jeff's loss.

Steps to reduce crime in my town

Jeff,

I sat on a police review board in my city in Arizona for a few years and our Sargent told us the crime rate would decrease by 40% in our city if people would close their overhead garage doors.

Crimes of opportunity here included stolen bicycles, golf clubs, cars and just about anything that could be stored in a garage.

Those of us on the board heeded the suggestion and told our neighbors and we rarely see anyone in our precinct leaving the overhead open.

Sorry to hear about losing the GPS.

Be prepared

... to the economic meltdown prints!

That SUX! I hate hearing

That SUX!
I hate hearing such stories...
(BTW...I visited my parents this evening to find that somebody ran over their mailbox..)

Stuff like this makes my blood boil.
I dont mean this to sound weird..but I'm one of those 'weirdos' that if I see something 'wrong' goin on..I step up..

I wish you luck in finding the dirtbag that stole your geepuss...

Theft from garage

I was getting things out of the garage to work in the back yard and had a blower and mower stolen in about 5 minutes. I don't leave the garage door open unless I'm working in the garage now. I keep both vehicles locked too. Also keep your entry door from the garage locked too. It makes it easy for them to get into your house.

Thieves that are caught red

Thieves that are caught red handed should be shot on the spot.

Theft from garage

Our local sheriff's police check the alleys and call you if the garge door is open. Most of the garage thefts occur in the day. Keep the door closed!

Leave a Message in a Bottle

Like the proverbial message in a bottle that arrived on home shores years later, copy a small text file into the root or map directory of your next GPS called "reward_if_found.txt". Its contents can be what ever you want, be it a phone number at work (not home) to call, an email address that can't be traced to a home address, or whatever you like. If the thief eventually sells the GPS and the new owner goes looking around in the directories one evening, there is a trail of breadcrumbs back to you, and indirectly to the person he/she purchased it from before finding out you are the right-full owner. I know this is a long shot, but having that way to contact you months or years later might just payoff.

Did you have the password enabled?

I have it set up on mine. I know it won't bring it back if it gets stolen, but at least I have the satisfaction of knowing that the thief will not likely be able to use it either.

I just hate that you have to be proactive in todays world!

Don't you just wish you could use a trip wire!

Everyone listen up, as we move though this depression, (and for those of you that done think it's a depression I guess your very lucky) things are going to get much worse as people get hungry and desperate to feed themselves and family. So desperate times take desperate counter measures, because guess what folks, this problem is coming to a suburb like yours. The urban areas are the poorest and the suburbs have the money making them prime for the picking, because the people that live there lack one thing " Street Sense" thus putting a huge target on both you and your property.

People in suburbia Lock your house,Garage and Car, be sure to put your valuables out of sight and the shot gun next to the bed. If you are working in the Back yard lock up the front of the house and then the same in back if you are working out front. How lazy have we gotten if we can't push a button on a remote to close the garage door, remember you the new target of the hungry and destitute and then there are just plain old thief's as well.

And for goodness sakes always take your GPSr with you! Unless you want it stolen!

HE TOLD us he had a fix in his campaign.

But i did get my tax cut that he promised -- $13.00 or $700.00 for the year -- at least W gave me back $1300.00. And my property taxes, cig taxes, and more to come tax increases were not there.

You figure it out!

serial number

make sure to post your unit ID on here or somewhere on the internet where google will index it. then when somebody tries to buy it, and hopefully they google the serial #, it will come up as stolen right away

Good idea

I wouldn't have even thought about that. Very good idea.

I have never set that. I don't know what I'm waiting for, I think it's about time I do that.

Theft

You guys live in the past. The thefts have more to do with drugs than hunger from lack of money. My daughters car stereo was stolen twice from the car sitting in the driveway - gave up after that and put in a cheapo. no problem now. You should never leave anything valuable in the car (in garage)! GPS is a hot item now because there is a demand for them, they are easily converted to cash, they are small and they are self contained nothing else required to operate them. You should have serial numbers of all your items marked somewhere so that you can report them stolen to your local police station. That will help them to see if your area is targeted by thieves and they can keep an eye out for suspicious people. That will also help them identify the unit as stolen if they catch the thief. Hell you talk about garage doors open - well in our city we have purse snatching going on. Things have changed and we have to change with it or go after the real cause with determination.
My opinion only.

Thieves are just plain SORRY!

Guys, I have been a Cop for over 17 years. Get this straight....AIN'T NOBODY STEALING TO FEED THEMSELVES OR THEIR FAMILY!!!!!!!!!! They steal because they are THIEVES! PERIOD! Drugs, alcohol, and things of that nature play in there for sure, but to provide food. NO WAY! Don't buy into that way of thinking, as it is just plain BS!

It only takes a moment

I am glad my Garmin c550 has PIN lock and/or Security Location to turn it on, so I will have the satisfaction if ever it may be stolen or forgotten, that the thief or buyer will not be able to use it once the unit is turned off.

I have also labeled my GPS with the warning "PASSWORD PROTECTED", it MAY (I say May) help deter the theft if I accidently left it out in the open for a short period of time.

BS? sure Glad your not a cop in my city

you might be right at the moment, but as things get worse and people get hungry we will have to see what happens.
We will watch this together. As the trillion dollar spending spree of our newly elected, runs out of people to take money from and more and more become destitute. But being a Cop for 17 years gives you all the answers, I guess thats what you guys talk about over donuts, that the hungry are so honest they would never steal to feed their family's instead let them starve.

you want Nerve

My Brother had just moved into his new house. Figured it would be easier and faster to unload most of the boxes into the garage then into the house. He unloads, moves his truck so his buddy (showing up with the next load 10/20 mins later)could unload the last of the boxes from his truck.
My brother and friend go to the backyard for 5/10 min to fire up the BBQ.
Comes back to the front and someone with a lot of BALLS had backed up into the driveway with a truck, loaded up a bunch of his boxes and drove away.
The nieghbors did not blink because they had no clue as to who was comming or going

Theft

Can't keep your guard down, no place is safe.

Dood... good for you!.. I

Dood... good for you!.. I agree, more people should stand up. It's been many years ago, more like 35 years ago when I was in my late teens. Back then CB radios were the big thing and one night I caught a guy in my parents garage, inside my car ripping out the cb....after a bit of a tussle, I gave him 2 options.. call the police or get his hand broken. Havent seen him since that night but I assume he was wearing a cast the next day!

Most of the thieves are young kids looking for a quick buck. They have learned that there are few, if any, consequences if they are caught. We (courts)are too easy on the young and it all starts in the home.

Serial Number List on POI Factory Signature?

So would it be a good idea if we listed our unit's Serial # on the signature of our posts? That would get it Googled. Any downsides to this strategy?

Oh and the donut thing is real original. I'll tell you what, why don't you buy a box, bring 'em down to the gym at the academy, and I'll show you what you can do with them...

Just list the serial number of the stolen unit in a single post. Otherwise, someone checking will get 4000 posts that don't tell him anything except that the unit was previously owned (which he surely knew already).
