Compass Heading
I read somewhere, and I really don't remember where, that the accuracy on these might not be too good and that is why they are not supplied that way. I was surprised by that because it seems to get speed so well I would think that it could get within 5 degrees of it on a compass heading. Apparently not because I don't recall anyone saying that any of the units designed for automobile use have that feature. Some may have it, I just haven't seen any reference to it.
.
Although the GPS doesn't have a compass heading you can use the GPS as a makeshift compass. Just change the Map View to North Up and then orient your body to face north. You can then approximate any direction you want to go.
Sorry for the intrusion
Don't mean to be lurking, but I was interested in the topic title. I did not realize that not all GPSr's have that feature, my old GPSmap 60CS did and my TomTom GO930 does as well.

Garmin compass
Just browsing and noticed these comments. I have been thinking about this recently. Since they are from wayyyyyy back in 2009, was wondering if anything new is in the works for a feature like this?

probably not
If you thinking about compass in car GPS there are probably no changes. In short: car GPS is needed to navigate on roads, not off-road. So compass is pointless in this scenario.
But if you using hand-held GPS (as foe example Oregon series), marine or airplane device, you will have compass. Difference is that those devices are used not to navigate on fixed roads, but in more of off-road fashion.
You Could
Try Garmin's Montana. It's a large handheld with a good sized screen which works well both on and off road. Powered vehicle mounts with speaker are also available.
Other options include using your smartphone's compass or a handheld as a second GPS mounted next to your primary navigator.
IMO, a digital compass readout isn't a feature most would find useful in an automotive GPS.
Built in GPS
Even the built in GPS in my car only show N NE E SE S, etc. There doesn't seem to be much demand for exact heading. There are digital compasses in the marketplace that sit beside the old style floating globe time that you used to see on dashboards. They were fussy as you had to set some compensators to cancel the effect of the magnetism in the body of the car.

Compass Heading
That would be a nice feature to have on all the units.
Well ...
There is a compass on the map screen of the Drive series. Also see this thread http://www.poi-factory.com/node/48277
