Due Diligence

This is going to sound like sour grapes so first I want to thank Miss POI and the contributers to this site. There are some really great POI files and helpful info here. Now my gripe.

I have noticed that a few POI files, I won't name names here, seem to be thrown together without double checking the info. I have been working on a file, converting it to GPX for my own use, and I've noticed that almost all of the coordinates are only out to two decimal places. That's fine but when I look up their address on their web sites, I find that the listed coordinates place them 3 or more blocks from their correct location. Sometimes not even on the right street.

It would seem to me that if you are going to make the effort of writing a POI file, you would at least try to make sure that the information in that file is correct.

There isn't any way possible that Miss POI can double check and correct each and every file on the site. But those of us who contribute can police ourselves. Don't post anything unless or until you have verified the information as far as possible.

Being first isn't what it's all about and yes, it is disappointing to spend weeks gathering information for a POI file and then finding out someone else beat you to it. But it's also disappointing to download a POI file that can't even get you on the right street.

Again, thank you to all of those who post good information and correct POI files. Above all, thank you Miss POI for all the work you do and for this site.

Lets work together on this.

Jack,
Let me know in an email what file that is and I will make sure it gets improved.

I have started to crack down on the content quality for our high profile projects. I am no longer accepting files that only have coordinates and chain name.

Even if you are not the first to come up with the idea for the project, I will get it pushed through if it is an improvement in the quality of the file.

It is about quality over quantity here at this factory.

It's a time consuming job to make good pois.
I have registered that some of the software (we don't tell names on this site!) available for producing co-ordinates from addresses, is not worth using, due to lack of a high degree of precission. Remember, somebody is going to use the poi, and somebody gets disappointed when trying to find the poi in the field.
If we make pois people can't use, this site will end up only for the interest of a narrow group of poi producers!

What you say is true, but the problem is really related to the user and the program they are using for building the file. Most of the spreadsheet programs default to only two decimal place precision and unless you change the default, that's what they will store when you write out the file.
