Redlight Beta file?

I think I might have missed something.
What is the redlight beta file in the download? How does it differ?

The redlight beta shows the

nice.

Can't wait to use this test software.

Much nicer

I like to cross streets much better and I have not seen any discrepancies so far.

Confused?

I read that link and if I understand correctly, the file basically changes my GPS from showing "Red Light Alert" (or whatever it is) to "54th Street"? Am I to just assume its a red light alert because the background changes color to red?

Maybe I'm the only one that likes the old way or doesn't get the new way.

No you are not the only

No you are not the only one.I have no problem with the old way either. The alert sounds at the required distance and that is all I need.Others have suggested the cross streets and find a need for it.I can live with both methods.

It also says RLC

The text starts with "RLC" for "Red Light Camera". It's very readable, in my opinion. I like the change.

Sound file alert

Don't know if your model plays .mp3's or .wav's, but if it does it's very easy to create a sound file that says "Red light camera ahead", and where junctions are close together the cross street info let's you know precisely what location is being used. Works for me.

I have a 265T, which does

I have a 265T, which does not have an mp3 player. If I load the redlight or speed cams with .wav corresponding files, will I get an audio alert?

Yes

Yes, you will hear the alerts. I have wav audio alert files loaded on my 660 and they work just fine.

So, I just change the mp3

So, I just change the mp3 alert file into a .wav format and the run poi loader with the poi's and correspondng poi .wav file and I am in business?

Well, so much for using .wav

Well, so much for using .wav files instead of mp3, with poi's. It wown't work on my 265WT. I tried replacing the mp3's in my poi-factory poi's with .wav and evertime I ran poi loader, it errored out saying " Can not find program files\Garmin\sox.exe". As soon as I removed the .wav files, it loaded all of my poi's, fine.
Also, I think the 660 has an mp3 player...the 265WT does not.

I haven't tried .wav files

I haven't tried .wav files yet as the 760 uses .mp3's, though if I can persuade my wife she needs the camera poi's I'll have to do it for her 250, but if you search this site for "sox.exe" then you'll find a number of posts explaining the procedure for using .wav's instead of .mp3's. As far as I remember sox.exe is a requirement, you have to d/load it and put it in the same directory as the poiloader. It's a one time setup procedure, once done it'll use .wav's for all subsequent updates.

Very interesting. I'll check

Very interesting. I'll check it out. I don't suppose there is any way of creating a music folder in my 265WT, that will allow for playing .wav files for music, instead of mp3's. Maybe that's pushing it a bit...lol.

Yes, you need a file called sox.exe. Instructions for getting and using the file and more information can be found here:

You may be missing something

I have a 760, so it plays mp3 and I didn't pay too much attention, but I remember reading something on one of the forum threads that you need an additional file in order to play wav files - something like sox.exe maybe?

I think you're going to need

I think you're going to need a really arcane set of POI's to manage that! wink.

I think I read that the .wav's have to be a certain Hz and bit rate to work properly for the alerts - the relevant posts should tell you exactly. The Sound Recorder that comes with WinXP will let you change the saved format to whatever is required (which may have the added benefit of allowing reduced file size). If you're using Vista you can just copy the executable from a WinXP machine and it will work in Vista (we've used it in Vista to embed sound in Powerpoint presentations).

Thanks

Thanks for the info. I did miss this thread.

This change will be fine with me.

duplicate handling?

How does the nuvi handle duplicate alerts if we copy both the old file and the beta file over to the POI db?

Will it trigger the alert notification twice?

wav files

gerrydrake.I have all kind of wav files on my 265 including red lights. They work great.

Here is a little outline of how to do it.
a. Download the latest PoiLoader file at http://www8.garmin.com/products/poiloader/ .
b. Download Sox Exe at http://rapidshare.com:80/files/139638423/sox.zip .
c. After un-zipping Sox Exe file place it in your Garmin folder where the PoiLoader exe file is located on the computer.
d. The wav file for alerts will be named the same as the CSV or GPX file except for the extensions.
e. You can make your own wav files by going to http://www.research.att.com/~ttsweb/tts/demo.php and typing in what you want it to say or use a program to convert mp3 files to wav. When using the conversion it must be saved as PCM, 44.100 kHZ., 16 bit, Mono

Thank you. Now my .wav files

Thank you. Now my .wav files work with my 265. I downloaded the sox.exe, as you suggested and placed it in my Garmin folder. The only thing is that everytime I run poi loader and it comes to a .wav file to load, It asks me for permission to use sox.exe, so with about 40 .wav files, I have to say 'yes', each time. I tried unchecking the box that asks you to ask for permission each time, but it just keeps coming back. Still.....it works...lol. Thanks for the heads up.

Strange!?!

I've never gotten that permission popup. What version POI Loader are you using - 2.5.2.0? Is your OS Vista, by chance? Maybe that has something to do with it.

Yes you will get two alerts if you are using both versions of the file

Miss POI

Thanks for the info. I'll

Thanks for the info. I'll see if I can find where I need to volunteer for the other version and give it a whirl.

love the new file

I've been using the new beta file and I really like it. Much more useful having street names. Thanks, Miss POI!

Beta can just be d/loaded

sharper4 wrote:

I don't think you have to volunteer, just d/load it. It's not like a Microsoft beta system.

Oh hang on... it may be, you get to install it like a regular system - then you check it for all the problems! wink However Miss POI seems to have the better quality control.
