nuvi over the Big Water

OK - I'm heading for Miami to catch a cruise ship going to Caribbean. I've got a nuvi 750. Why can't I plot a route from Miami to Barbados using pedestrian mode?? smile It tries to calculate and says it runs out of memory.
Can I track the ship, at least, and see where we are located. Maybe I can help the captain navigate!! What about the tracklog feature. Does it work over water.

I think I can plot a route with my GPSMAP76CSx.

Bob,

The track log will work fine. The 2 things you will probably need is a way to charge the Nuvi on the ship and you'll probably need access to a laptop to upload you tracklog or when it fills up it will wrap around on itself. It's hard to say how long it will take to fill up. The track log has a limited amount of position points that it can save and the speed at which the Nuvi lays down points dependt on how manny turns and curves the Nuvi thinks it has to record. I've driven from Boston to Atlantic City a few times and the tracklog didn't quite hold the entire roud trip.

If you want to know your approx track you could simply turn the Nuvi on for a few minutes every few hours or so and let it record the track. Each time you do that, a new track will be logged with the date and time. It's cool to look at these later in Mapsource.

On your other problem (trying to calculate the route) I suspect you gave the Nuvi an insolveable problem because it only knows how to route over water if there is a ferry route it knows about. If there is a ferry it typicallt works fine.

Unless you are Jesus, the unit will not allow you to calculate a route over water! smile

You may also want to modify your basemap. There is a free world basemap which includes the Caribbean. Search this site and you will find a couple of threads discussing the basemap.

The trick (not Jesus') is to switch to "Off Road" under navigation. It will then plot a straight line route to the destination.

Too bad

You can't plot your cabin location. Those ships are so big, I bet it would be handy for finding your way back from say...the bar/casino.

Have fun!

I used my 660 up and down

I used my 660 up and down the coast of China, Korea, and Japan. All I did was turn it on and selected View Map. There everything was in all its glory. It showed the position of the ship relative to any one coast.

while the ship is underway, as your cabin is moving.

Cool

That's cool, I will have to give it a try.

Now I know the difference between pedestrian and off road.
