Garmin 2009 Map Update on Ebay

The Seller posted the item as NEW saying that they buy surplus. They did not think the item was used.

Seller Post:
"Item is NEW and in the original open package. In the event that this product registration key has been used by the store for any reason..there is an 800 number on the package that can be called. Garmin has stated that they will reissue the license key for the item."

Is there any truth to this? Yea!

I wouldn't

touch that one. Maps are unlocked to one unit only.
I would have to take a pass on that deal, if it was factory sealed that would be a different story.

I agree. I know that the map

I agree. I know that the map updates are only good for one unit.
It was his message that Garmin would "reissue" the license for it that was interesting.
I do not think Garmin is "that" customer oriented.
Has anyone ever heard of them doing this?

The Truth Is Out There!

Send Garmin

I would send Garmin the link of the sale. Let them know what they are being signed up for. If it is not legit I am sure that they would let Ebay know.

Garmin Lifetime Maps/Ebay

I just did a search on Ebay and could not find any lifetime maps for sale, so maybe Ebay removed it.

I personally would not have touched that listing with a 10 ft pole. Ebay does have some guarantees for purchases on the site, but they can be difficult to deal with.

I recently bought an item at Half.com (owned by Ebay) and never received the items. It took months to get a refund.

eBay Maps can save you $$$$

I purchased the TOPO US 2008 on eBay. In the stores and on Garmin it was $120.00 or so. I bought it on eBay for $65.00. I just made sure that the sellers feedback rating was good and that he didn't have any recent negatives.
As long as it says it is factory sealed and it's a reputible seller, you should have no problem.
I downloaded it to my computer, and loaded it onto an SD card using MapSource. It will work with any unit, becuase it is loaded via MapSource into the GPS. I loaded it into my 760 on an SD card, and directly onto my old iQue M5. That was a nice bonus...

.

The thing with TOPO, though, is that it doesn't use unlock codes. So, risk is much less that it won't be a usable copy. But definitely stick with reputable sellers.

But I still wouldn't go anywhere near the product in the OP.

Does anyone use their GPS for offroad 4X4 trips and trails???
I would like to have more trails for my GPS??? Would I find these on a Topo set of maps?

Off Road is there

I haven't been to my usual off roading places with it yet, but it has a ton of forest roads and trails. It also has all of the roads that the regular maps have. The difference between the two is that the topo version has the dirt roads and trails that will not appear on the regular maps, and it has all of the topo poi's. For instance, you can search for "mine" and find all of the mines near you by name. Same goes for lakes, streams, etc. It is definitely worth the money if you are an off roader!

No routing?

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't believe that TOPO can do routing. That is a major feature of the City Navigator maps. I was also under the impression that the "regular" roads were more complete with CN than with TOPO. (I've always been a weenie who just sees a bunch of wavy lines on TOPO maps. I know what the lines represent and basically how to read them but they aren't something that "clicks" in my brain.)

The US TOPO (except for the National Parks Topo) maps do not support auto-routing.

The Canadian Topo maps do support some auto-routing.
