250 w I can't see defauld poi icons when driving

Hi;

I have searched forum about same subject there are some but they dont help to me.

In 3D mode if I click screen for zoom mode, I can see all the defauld factory poi icons othervise I can't see any of them 3D or 2D mode. Only camera icons and allert are working

But I can see all the custom poi icons which I created on map mode.

Thank you for replay.

If I understand your question..

You can't see icons unless you are zoomed in? If so, that's the way it functions. I'm not positive about your unit but some do not show the icons in 3d mode...

May I wrong explaned I am

May I wrong explaned I am only see them if I click to middle of screen. This mode is not good when driving because this is just for drag and point to where do you want to go.

I think 'zoom in' is which you are talking + - sign in top right and left. I cant see them if I use + sign too with any of map mode.

And I can see custom poi in any map mode.

thank you.

I think we have a language problem here

But if I understand, you can see the icons when you push the + on your screen but do not want to drive with that view of the map. If this is correct I am not aware of a solution.

Maybe someone from Belgium or one of our French speaking users can help? anyone?

Sorry for my english. I think I have explained wrong again.

I can not see the icons when I push the + on my screen.

Only I can see them if I push the middle of the screen. (This drag screen is not good for drive.)

Thank you.

You can be certain that your English is better than our French/Flemish (at least for most of us).

I don't know about the 250W, but most models allow you to see the custom POIs in 2D mode when you zoom in all the way, but as soon as you begin moving, it may zoom back out. I would bet that your unit is operating as designed. Remember, you can't do anything with the icons anyway. It sounds as if your unit may only show the icons if an alert is set, and that makes sense -- when the alert goes off, you want to see where the POI is. The rest of the time, most of us don't want to see the screen cluttered with a lot of icons that we have no need to see. Certainly, I don't feel it is safe to be constantly watching the screen to see what POIs might be nearby.

Maybe somebody with a 250W can reply.

It's not a problem

Can you see them when you push the + in 2D mode? You may have to be zoomed in quite close 200 or 300 ft or 100 meters or less...

bentbiker and aophiuchus thank you for all your replys.

aophiuchus I cant see them with 2D +in and most closer zoom too. Only speed cameras and custom pois I can see.

You are welcome...

Is your question answered?

Have you

tried to refresh the unit in a way? Like a reset? Or maybe removing the files and then re-installing them?

I did hard reset two times.

I did hard reset two times.

2D only mode

My Nuvi 350 will only show POI icons while routing if the screen is in 2D display and zoomed in to 200 ft or less. It will not show them in 3D mode.

A work around...

I have a 250w also and the least distracting way I found that I can see POI's that are near me, and even at times makes more sense, is by backing out of the map screen, choosing where to?, and choose the POI file of your choice that you have uploaded, or from the built in food fuel etc. lists, ...now here is the key....go in ONLY to the point that you see the list of actual POI's to choose from. Standing still, you will only see what mileage from your current destination you are from the POI and if it is SE, NE, etc. When driving, it will be dynamic and give you a dynamic ARROW instead of the SE, N, etc., and the distance to the POI. This way you can see all of the top 4 localities to you and what direction they are from you with an arrow. I find this less distracting than actually trying to pinpoint intersections from where you are, as it is all text with arrows. If you like one and want it to map you, choose it and let the gps take you there.

Vanman

Oh, by the way...

I cannot see POI's either except for with a micro small sized gray dot. This is even if I save the POI file with particular icons in the original GPX file. Once it goes through the POI loader by Garmin, I think POI loader strips the chosen icons for the 250w, but am not sure. I have to save the pertinent ones I want to see on screen to a Favorite to see it without the icon getting stripped. I think your issue is an issue with all the 250w units. Maybe more units, not sure.

Hope the work around I posted helps. I know it is nice to see the POI's, but I think that between what I posted and setting proximity warnings, I think that is as good as it gets. I dont think it is possible without going to a more expensive unit.

Default POIs

Default POIs are viewable in browse map mode. They are suppressed in routing(driving) mode by design. Custom POIs with .bmp icons associated with them should appear if zoomed in far enough (varies by unit).

Thank you all your answers.

Thank you all your answers.

As I understand there is no any screet setings or something like that for show them all when driving for 250w in that case my problem is not problem and it is just normal software working proces.

May all this can fix by firmware updates in future.

Thanks again.

TheVanman I think gray dot

TheVanman I think gray dot problem comes if you have overrode to original poi files. Just change your files in poi folder with your original file which before you bacedkup.

Seeing POIs

Zonder,

I am not sure about the 250w model but on the 750 there is a setting that controls the MAP Detail.
It is located at:

Where to? >> TOOLs >> Settings >> Map >> Map Detail

You can increase or decrease the amount of map detail.

If it is not there just look around and you might find where the setting is located at.

Seeing default POIs

Zonder,

I just did a little experiment with my 750. I put the 750 in simulator mode, changed location to a place that has a lot of default POIs (Built in by Garmin).
I then went into the Navigation Map Mode(driving mode map) and all POIs disappear, even at the lowest zoom number of 80ft.

I really don't mind this because I don't want to see the POIs on the map. unless I am looking for some place in particular. Then I would touch the screen and put it in the Map Mode to look around.

So I guess that is the way it is suppose to happen.

Keeps the screen from becoming cluttered while driving.

Nuvi 2x0 are different from bigger cousins

The 2x0 series are different from their bigger cousins. They are "dumbed down" or perhaps "stupid-downed".

In older GPS units I could turn specific groups of POIs off and on. In my 200W I can see some when under 300 ft resolution. I see customs when only when sought, otherwise I get a dot (sometimes).

Using proximity seems to help. But the ding-ding may drive you crazy. SinceI don't have an .mp3 ability.

As one writer put it, the most useful feature is the list when doing a POI search. It gives arrows to POIs.

I'm guessing that if you are on this site, you are outstripping the capabilities of the 2x0 series. I share this frustration.

Garmin has really good

Garmin has really good hardware but not good enough software. I hope they change their soft in near future.

Before I have used tomtom and mio for long time Garmin's soft is very poor between them but just for hardwere I prefared this.

Gray Dots...

zonder wrote:

Thanks Zonder. It has done this since the very first POI I uploaded, but I uploaded and then changed the name so I can add more later and have all of them with me. So, maybe this is something that I created.

I have about a dozen different POI files on the SD card, (that is where I keep them...) and when I want to shut one or more off, I change the extension to "poifile.gpi_".

I wasnt too concerned about the icons. Mostly about using POI as a proximity and speed indicator. If I want icons, I save the important ones as favorites and they always show up.

I will try to change one of the POI files to the default folder and name on the unit itself and not the card to see if that helps. If not, I am not heartbroken, I can always use the POI list and let it point me as I did in Yosemite a couple weeks ago to point to the many waterfalls and indicate what each was called and how far away it was.

I had my 60csx also which gave me TOPO maps AND POI's on top of it all. And, by the way, with the same gray dot's.

Problem is a drag

I notice my Garmin usually displays POI icons but seems to give their display the lowest priority.

While maps on the internet can be moved in the direction one drags the mouse on the map or the direction one drags the finger on touch active cell phones, the garmin nav moves whatever is touched on the map to the center of the screen producing rather bizarre behaviour when one drags a finger across the map.

I'm Guessing

The behavior you describe must be peculiar to the built-in model(s) -- my 660 acts just like the internet maps you mention. It does not re-center upon a touched point.
