I'm new & missing something here

I am new to GPS units and I just found this site the other day. I loaded up some of the POI's with bitmaps onto my Garmin 760. If I go through the 'Go to', Extras, Custom POI's ect, it will route me to the destination I choose. This tells me the POI's are loaded and working.

Here is the part I don't get... Along with the csv file, I loaded a bmp file (obtained from this site) and renamed it to be exactly the same as the csv file (except for the extension of course). But when I drive past one of the POI's I've loaded, I don't see the icon for it! I also have a mp3 filed named the same and do not get a proximity alert.

One POI I loaded from this site (BTW, thanks to the people who have contributed these files and this site for making them available) is for my bank. I like to know when I'm near one of their locations since the ATM is free for me to use. I was hoping that the icon for the bank would show up when I was driving through a neighborhood with a branch nearby. I don't think it is a proximity problem either, as I drove right next to one and it did not show up. I know that this location is in the csv file, as I was able to select it as a 'Go To' on my way back home and it directed me right there.

Like I said, I'm a newbie at this. So aside from checking what I mentioned above (i.e. I have a valid csv file, I was close to one of the loctions in that csv file), I made sure that the filenames for the csv, bmp & mp3 were the same by using copy & paste. Also under 'Proximity Points', I have Custon POI's checked.

So, what am I missing here?

.

On most models, you must be zoomed in to at least 300 feet or closer in a 2D (not 3D) map mode in order to see the icons (even the default gray dot). And on some models, you must also be browsing the map for them to show.

Also

In order for the alerts to work, they must be set when you load them with POILoader. This is done by loading the POIs in manual mode and checking the appropriate box when eash files is loaded.

Search on "using POILoader" and you find many helpfule links here.

Hi whodat1,

There's a great site for Nuvi owners by Gary Hayman, a member of the poi-factory, that will address all of your questions and then some.

Garmin GPS Tricks, Tips, Work Arounds, Hints, Secrets and Ideas for the Garmin nüvi GPS

Check it out:

Thanks for the responses. I

Thanks for the responses. I reloaded my POI's manually last night and set the proximity distances on those that I wanted to get an alert on. I'll test this again today.

I was in 3d mode when I was trying to see if the icons would show up. I'm surprised that these don't work in that mode. The few places that I have 'saved' directly on the gps, such as home & office, show up when I'm in 3d mode.

Thanks again for the advice. I knew I was missing something!

BTW, thanks Tailspin for the link to Gary Hayman's site. What a boatload of useful information!!!

Hi whodat1,

I've learned more about my Nuvi, from Gary Hayman's site, than you can shake a stick at...

I think Miss Poi should put a link to his Nuvi site at the top of the page, along with "getting started" "faq" "icons" "sounds" and "about/contact" links.

Just my 2¢...
