Firmware 4.2 now available for Nuvi 7xx
Just noticed that Garmin has a GPS Chipset Type M update available under additional updates (Oct. 13, version 2.80). This revision reports NO change history or release notes. After the Nuvi 4.0/4.1/4.2 debacle I am not terribly inclined to install this update until I find out more. Does anyone have any additional information on this update? Has anyone else installed it on their Nuvi and what effect has it had on your Nuvi?

Everyday is a GREAT day :)
v3.0=v4.2 as far as i'm concerned
"No guts, No glory" Huh?
I may never upgrade. I don't see any benefit right now, my 760 is perfect in every way I use it. v3.0=v4.2, as far as I'm concerned.
If you look back in the forum threads to the 3.00 and 3.10 threads a lot of people were having problems with 3.00 and 3.10 including myself on my 760. There were random shut downs, lockups, stuttering and so on.
4.00 fixed those problems but created the TTS voice lag and now 4.20 has fixed that. My 760 has had every version available and without a doubt 4.20 is the best and most trouble free for me.
Nobody has to upgrade to any version if they do not want to and if your completely happy now you have no reason to. I would venture to guess that most people that buy these units never do update or very rarely update them and a lot do not even know that they can update them. I think the people that follow the forums are the exception, not the rule.
You're wrong. I have followed all the threads on upgrades. 99% of the lock-up problems were on v3.1. There were a few posts on v3.0 and some of these had upgraded to v3.1 and had to downgrade back to v3.0 before getting problems. I'm still on an original v3.0 and never had any freezes, stutters, or lock-ups since.
Like I said, if you had a broken v4.0, then it's simply common sense to get the fixes available in v4.2. Otherwise, if you never introduced any snow-balling problems by upgrading to v3.1 and v4.0, why upgrade if v4.2 simply gets you the version you had before? There is no benefit. v3.0=v.4.2.
You have to update firmware first to activate lifetime traffic!

You have to update the GPS's firmware and receiver firmware if you want to add the new lifetime traffic option that is now available. The biggest problems I had with both the 3.00 and 3.10 firmware were the random shut downs that occured with no warning that never occured again after going to 4.00 and above. To me the random unit shut off while driving a route was more than a minor problem.
This is what is in the email that you will receive after purchasing the lifetime traffic from Garmin and they say you must update both the GPS and the receiver before you can activate the lifetime traffic:

Used it driving to work today, and the only difference I've noticed is that it seems to take a little longer before discovering it needs to 'recalculate' (as compared to 3.20)...
In looking back through just this thread, you're one of at least three to have reported this. So it seems likely that a slowness to initiate a "recalc" is part of 4.2. Still, I'll take this over the 0.2-mile voice prompt delays in the earlier v4 firmwares.
Could it be that Garmin left a little lag just to make their new 7X5 line more appealing?
You mean like how when going to a restaurant for breakfast and you order their "plain" omelet breakfast and it comes a little burnt and the coffee had a wee bit of vinegar in it -- you figure that maybe they did that so one will come back to the same restaurant and order the deluxe version instead?
Might not work.
The Difference here is Garmin is saying their "cook" was just trying a new recipe. I am sure you will come back and try us again.

Well, I guess there is a choice - stay on whatever version you are on or try the new 4.2 buffet. I'm finding it tasty, but others seem to find it too salty.
