Upgraded my 760 from 3.1 to
Upgraded my 760 from 3.1 to 4.2 last night, Took it out for a spin today and it's working flawlessly. Bluetooth is working perfect as well. So far, all is well, and I'm happy with the update.
Recalculating
Upgraded my 750 to v4.2 last night. I did some testing today and I noticed that it doesn't detect and recalculate an off-route excursion very fast. Not nearly as fast as v4.1 or my first version. However the screen seems to scroll much smoother, the time lag problem on voice prompts is fixed and the voice stuttering is fixed as well.
All in all, a very good job Garmin. Thanks
Jack
Bluetooth version 3.1
Same here - 4.2 seems to fix a lot of things. No lag, no voice stuttering. My bluetooth still disconnects on a regular basis - but it's nowhere near the problems that others have with bluetooth. Overall, much better
I have never had my LG Voyager ever even once disconnect with any of the Garmin firmware versions on my 760. Have you done the latest 3.10 Garmin bluetooth firmware update yet?
Sounds like your problem may be with the phone itself if you have already updated the Garmin bluetooth firmware. You may want to take it into your cell service provider and have them update your phone's firmware. I have had mine updated 3 times in the 10 months that I have had the phone.
I'm not sure which version of the bluetooth firmware I'm on. Where do you find this? Is it in the diagnostic screens?
Pleased vs 4.1
- Voice lag is gone
- Initial load is much faster
- Redraw time is faster
- Noticed 1 stutter, but it was during a recalc
Overall, very pleased (so far)
Tried it out
I installed 4.2 and tried it out this morning. The unit seemed to work the way it used to before the "bad" firmware. So far, so good.
I wonder if it's safe to go back to the updated Jack and Jill voices now.

Took my 750 with 4.2 installed on a day trip for work - it's back to its pre 4.0 snafu self.

well looks like 4.2 fixed
well looks like 4.2 fixed everything 4.0 broke...
but it looks like the map doesnt redraw when its talking again...
guess i can live w/ slow redraw than completely late voice announce
Sweet, I just installed it
Sweet, I just installed it and I am going to test it on my way home. I'll let you guys know if there are any problems.

Where can I get a complete list of compatible phones for the 760? Garmin tells me they do not have such a thing.
While Garmin does have a list on their website, it is not accurate. There are other phones which work with their units. Garmin just doesn't keep their website updated.
If your phone isn't listed, don't assume its not compatible. Go to a store which has a demo 760 and test the bluetooth feature using your phone.
Bluetooth
I have been there and there is not a printable list you can take with you to the Cell store to insure you get a compatible phone. Any other ideas where there may be a printable list??
Thanks
Thanks to all who gave this a try and posted. Based on the feedback posted, I'll go ahead for an update later in the week from 3.1 to 4.2.
760 was always slow to recalculate
Upgraded my 750 to v4.2 last night. I did some testing today and I noticed that it doesn't detect and recalculate an off-route excursion very fast. Not nearly as fast as v4.1 or my first version.
Upgrading from a 350, one of the first things I noticed was the much slower recalculating on the 760. It seems to be a lot more "stubborn" with it's snap to road. It's REALLY slow to recalculate when I am running a saved route from MapSource. I can go a full block sometimes before it will detect and recalculate. It's usable, but really annoying sometimes in dense city traffic when the streets are closely packed. This was always this way, for as long as I have had it.
I certainly hope it's not any slower in recalculating than before. Well, I'll find out tomorrow. I have a back way out of my subdivision that's shorter than Jill tells me. So before I get one block from home, I'll hear a "recalculating".
I Agree about the phone list
I Agree about the phone list not being complete. I have an HTC Touch Vogue, and it works 100% with, and its not listed on the Garmin site as a compatible phone.
Bring your GPS with you to the Cell phone store, and try it out there. Tell them, its the deciding factor for your purchase, and I'm sure they'll let you play away, if it means a sale.
Thumbs up to Garmin
Upgraded yesterday and today everything worked just fine. In the past I actually had lock-up problems and other "bugs" even with 3.1, which are all but gone now.
I am back to being able to use TTS voices, which I had stopped using because of the 2 sec. delays, also the 4.1 lock-up when saving positions is also gone.
Good stuff Garmin, 4.2 is a keeper !

Why exactly are we thanking Garmin for fixing problems that they themselves created??
I could see if Garmin gave us an update which actually added new features or improved existing features. But thats not the case here.

ever think about using Pre-Computer technology???
A pencil and paper.
And if not, and you still want to use Post-Computer Technology, just highlight the text, then copy, and then paste to Notepad and print.

Software Update
Does this update allow user to go Back to a Previous version if they desire it or want it for some reason.
The last version was a real pill for some people and when they tried to go backwards to their previous version, it did not allow it.

FREE TRAFFIC with v4.20 on 760
After I undated to v4.20 for my 760, I noticed this.
http://tinypic.com/view.php?pic=o51c15&s=4
Has anyone else? This was not there before and is not present on my 750v3.1. I did a search and found this to refer to a French traffic service. This is a bit puzzling to me as I live in the Midwest US.
I've read elsewhere that others have suggested that Garmin offer free traffic service to make amends for the fiasco brought on with v4.0/4.1 software. Perhaps someone at Garmin listened… and has a sense of humor.
SOftware Update
No problems yet...
Possible explanation for the occasional long map loading delay!
Saw this posted at GPS review forum and may explain why I notice that every once in a while I see a much longer map loading delay. Also see why I should just let it complete and not shut off and restart. Could be that stopping the process to soon could cause file corruption and other problems. Also shows how to display the screen to check for the defrag info.
"Note that it has been reported in another forum that there may indeed still be some slow "loading maps" issues. A good observation from one user...they happened to check the speedo/diagnostics page after such an incident and noted that a unit DEFRAG had occurred at approx. the same time that this slow "loading maps" instance occurred. It could very well be that the unit is defragging itself, thus creating this slow "loading maps" issue. Nothing is verified yet, but I'd say don't be surprised if you still get one of these instances periodically. It's probably best just to let the unit sit and defrag itself (if that's what it's actually doing) rather than forcing a reboot.
To check if a DEFRAG has occurred after one of these instances, go to the trip computer screen and press the round speedometer dial for approx 7-10 seconds. The DEFRAG heading should be on the second or third screen (I don't have my unit to verify). Check the date of the DEFRAG heading and see if it coincides with the date of your slow "loading maps" instance. If it does, I'd say it's probable that this issue is caused by the unit defragging itself."

Warning Re 4.20
Warning - there is a bug in 4.20. Another forum reported this problem and I confirmed it on my 750. If you create a route with a lot of waypoints (10 or more) and then optimize the route on the unit, the end point gets deleted and some waypoints get duplicated.
So if you depend on the routing feature and insert a lot of waypoints, DO NOT UPDATE TO 4.20.
I agree why thank Garmin
Hey all
I agree that it is wrong to thank Garmin for fixing something they created and then took their sweet time fixing it and not saying boo about it.
This time a brick will be sent to GARMIN for V4.0 and v4.1
Bouquets are for making the product better and introducing features which will want you to make a Garmin the only GPS to bless your windshield.
I like others is still waiting for additional testing before I upgrade from v3.0 to v4.2 or whatever. To date I have not seen a purpose to update, no real features. What more can I say !!!
The Bartman: say thanks and talk later - just gotta love the nuvi 760 gadget

HMM that is odd, the routing works just fine on mine, i am a realtor and have to show homes all day long yesterday placed 14 homes on the routing no issues here??!!
Everyday is a GREAT day :)
Try This
Create the route and make a note of your starting and ending points. Save the route. Now open the route again and select "Optimally Reorder Points". Now view the waypoints on your route. The ending point will be different and more than likely some of your waypoints will be duplicated.
I just tested it again using 14 waypoints (starting, ending, and 12 stops) and it reproduced the same problem.
Success!
I just saw over on GPSPASSION that 4.2 is available for download via Webupdater
I'll download and install too. I am very optimistic from what I read.
Just as reported, I too am very pleased with this update. I do believe that they finally got it right.

I may give it a go
Since I don't use waypoints I am staring to feel comfortable with the 4.2 upgrade. I now just have to get up the nerve to install it.
How long is long enough? A week? Two weeks? Can somebody push me into the water please.

Routing Bug in Version 4.20
Hello Gadget Guy
I have a Nuvi 760 with PCB version 7 and just upraded to Version 4.20 and have the routing bug. When I create a 14 point route and re-optimise the endpoint vanishes and some points duplicate.
So it looks like we have a reproduceable bug
It's only been a couple of days and already a bug has cropped up

I'm in no hurry to upgrade. Mine works fine with 2.90.. I may get a stutter once in a while bu so what? I'm waiting at least a month and then may not update...

Interesting, b/c I did not do the 4.0 upgrade but had to send my 750 back for a differnt issue most likly the defrag problem. When they sent me the refurb unit it had 4.0 on it (I called and did a bit of chewing out over that), and the MadMaps Route 66 tour which I did not have on my old unit, maybe it was to make up for the 4.0 or Garmin is taking a lesson from Cracker Jacks and putting a prize inside.

scott81nyc - updating is not always the best thing. Please tell me what improvements Garmin has made to the 7xx units with the 4.0, 4.1, and 4.2 updates. None that I can see. But they sure as heck screwed up our units.
So why exactly is it a bad thing if someone decides to NOT update their unit?

Please tell me what improvements Garmin has made to the 7xx units with the 4.0, 4.1, and 4.2 updates.
Improvements? We weren't expecting any improvements. There were numerous bugs fixed in each release. Unfortunately, some other things were broken along the way. Looks like they have just about squashed them all now.
