Webupdater finds that we finally have a new software version for the 7XX. Here is the change log:

Changes from version 4.10 to version 4.20:
Corrected a shutdown when European users change traffic providers.
Resolved Text To Speech stuttering issue.
Corrected issue with saving your location by touching the vehicle icon.

I'd love to hear some input from people before I take the plunge and update from 3.1 to 4.2, Thanks!

Navigation Lag is gone on my 760!!!!

Just tested the 4.20 firmware update on my 760 with the Jill 1.90 TTS voice and the lag is gone. Now hopefully everything is fixed and nothing new will rear it's ugly head and we can move on to more positive things again.

tried the firmware 4.2 software on my new 780 works great;

GPS Simulator on 750

Here are my findings with my GPS Simulator on.

1. Using the city streets on a 2.8 mile drive I get very minimal lag, voice matches to what is shown on screen when turn is coming up. Red Light POI is responding nicely with update. I notice no lag with custom poi’s or any weird anomalies.
2. Using the Highway on 4.3 mile drive I get a small pause on the map but again, the voice matches to what is shown on screen when turn is coming up. With a speed limit of 50mph I get a .04 mile warning.
3. Using the Highway on 6.2 mile drive I get a small pause on the map but again, the voice matches to what is shown on screen when turn is coming up. With a speed limit of 65mph I get a .1 mile warning.

Tomorrow I’ll be using it for work and post my findings on city streets and major highways.

Glad to hear others got there bluetooth back.

Bluetooth works fine with 4.2 firmware

Tested the bluetooth with my phone and works as it should with 4.20.

I never tried to backdate from 4.00 or 4.10 so never did loose the bluetooth functions in the first place so have no idea if it would recover it for the people that backdated and then lost it.

backdated Bluetooth broken issue...fixed or not?

bandaid wrote:

I have heard in another forum the 4.20 update does NOT fix the broken Bluetooth issue due to backdating 4.0/4.1 to an earlier version. We will need to hear from others here to validate that this issue has been corrected.

Same Ol' Same Ol' Bluetooth that was backdated on my 760 still broken. I wish Garmin had mentioned no such rescue as I would have sent it back a month ago for a refurb instead of waiting all this time for nothing. With a broken bluetooth the rest of that upgrade has little value to me sad

Unless you were a very early adopter you knew in advance that rolling back the update would trash your bluetooth. Those warnings account for the fact that I didn't do it.

If this update fixes the lag issues without introducing some other major problem then I say, "Wahoo!" I'm about to download it now.

I just ran it across the Chesapeake Bay Bridge and Tunnel form Hampton Roads and the Ft. McHenry Tunnel in Baltimore. No problems there.

What tunnel are you having trouble with?

I'm driving in Norway, lots of long tunnels. Sw 4.10 was simulating long tunnels. So I belive this is a new bug in sw 4.20.

v4.2 timing = v3.1 timing

I re-ran my comparison of my two 760’s and one 750. This time with 760v4.2, 760v4.1, and 750v3.1.
As before, I loaded the exact same route from MapSource into the three units. On my drive this morning, that consisted of approximately 13 turns, the baseline 750v3.1 and the 760v4.2 were spot on to each other with turn announcement timing, with several alerts issued at EXACTLY the same time (sounds kind of neat). The 760v4.1 lagged behind approximately 3 to 6 seconds behind at every turn, which pushed the alert past the turn in some instances, just as before.
Conclusion:
With respect to route alerts, the v4.2 has returned the 760 announcement timing back to the performance equal to that of the v3.1 software. I can not verify that there are not any other curiosities or bugs introduced with the latest version, but with the announcement timing, this version corrects the lag back to ‘normal’ based on my one drive this morning.

I’ll repeat the comparison on my return trip this afternoon and if there are any anomalies, I‘ll report again. Otherwise, I’ll hold off a bit longer updating the other 760 to v4.2 to determine if there are any other differences worth noting. Still, it will be quite some time before I pull the trigger on upgrading the 750v3.1 to v4.2.

Works very well here

Updated to 4.2, bluetooth still works great (Note that I never tried to 'backdate' firmware, that seemed to break bluetooth permanently for people that tried it)

Other observations: Lag is gone, boot and satellite lock seem very fast now. I have Garmin lock turned on, it used to ask for my pin on every power up... It now knows almost immediately on power up that it is 'home'.

Will road test for a week and report back here, but initial tests show this update works well.

Thanks... Will test it

Thanks... Will test it today.

If there is a bug, you would want to be able to go back to a stable version. In the last update, Garmin made this impossible.

I agree that the voice lag is gone, both in city and at highway speeds. I've checked with both Jill and Karen (both voices lagged with 4.0 and 4.1) and all's well. Also agreed that the satellite lock is very much quicker than ever before.

One thing I may have noted in my first day's tests with 4.2 is that when routed with a destination in place, then leaving the suggested route, I find that there's a longer-than-earlier-firmware-version delay in hearing "Recalculating" and the revising of the map and directions. This may be a one-time fluke so I'll keep checking, but wonder if anyone else might be seeing a delayed route revision. In any event, even if true, I'll take the delayed route corrections over the past two firmwares' 0.2-mile voice delays any day!

I have never had my LG Voyager ever even once disconnect with any of the Garmin firmware versions on my 760. Have you done the latest 3.10 Garmin bluetooth firmware update yet?

Sounds like your problem may be with the phone itself if you have already updated the Garmin bluetooth firmware. You may want to take it into your cell service provider and have them update your phone's firmware. I have had mine updated 3 times in the 10 months that I have had the phone.

You used to be able to backdate if there was a bug in the version you updated to. but garmin stoped this process with 4.0 version, without telling anyone before they upgraded to 4.0.in other words if current version has a bug you are stuck.

Update Works

I updated to 4.2 last night and all is well. I ran both nüvi 760 and nüvi 880 next to each other this morning and they are nearly identical in timing on instructions and POI notification. Most often both units are saying the same thing at the same time and in a timely manner.

I did not test the Bluetooth, but have never had any issues with Bluetooth on any of my Garmin units. I did have a problem when I first got my v1 iPhone, but that was a phone issue that was quickly resolved by Apple.
