i agree with everything, my point is there are leaders and followers, some people just jump on the bandwaggon, and those people just dont deserve any respect. respect goes out to pioneers who try new things, it is their input that fixes and progresses things, not people that sit back behind the scenes
Another success
Another success with 4.2. Even though my 4.1 problems weren't as extreme as others reported.
Upgrade .... So far so good....
I updated my Nuvi 780 from 4.1 to 4.2. The voice lag is indeed gone... 80 mile round trip tested with no knows issues.. Traffic, bluetooth, POI's all worked as expected...
Hope I am not speaking to soon, but so far so good...

You can recognize the "leaders" from the arrows sticking out of them. Discrection is the better part of valor.
Defrag Date......
Saw this posted at GPS review forum and may explain why I notice that every once in a while I see a much longer map loading delay. Also see why I should just let it complete and not shut off and restart. Could be that stopping the process to soon could cause file corruption and other problems. Also shows how to display the screen to check for the defrag info.
"Note that it has been reported in another forum that there may indeed still be some slow "loading maps" issues. A good observation from one user...they happened to check the speedo/diagnostics page after such an incident and noted that a unit DEFRAG had occurred at approx. the same time that this slow "loading maps" instance occurred. It could very well be that the unit is defragging itself, thus creating this slow "loading maps" issue. Nothing is verified yet, but I'd say don't be surprised if you still get one of these instances periodically. It's probably best just to let the unit sit and defrag itself (if that's what it's actually doing) rather than forcing a reboot.
To check if a DEFRAG has occurred after one of these instances, go to the trip computer screen and press the round speedometer dial for approx 7-10 seconds. The DEFRAG heading should be on the second or third screen (I don't have my unit to verify). Check the date of the DEFRAG heading and see if it coincides with the date of your slow "loading maps" instance. If it does, I'd say it's probable that this issue is caused by the unit defragging itself."
Just looked at mine 0n Oct 15 08 at 9:18PM.
The Defrag date said 16-OCT-08.
Wonder if that means that's when the next one will occur?
Defrag Date
It uses UTC internally and doesn't correct for time Zone when it reports system functions.

4.2 didnt fix my blue tooth firmware update problem. it still wants to update firmware and lock up the nuvi. I have replaced the file on the unit and everything else i can think of. I called and they said send it back with the receipt. My only problem was that it was a gift. Service rep on the phone told me he wasnt sure if he could help with out the receipt. Maybe i just need to speak to another rep? Man i dont want to have to pay the rma fees like i did a few years ago. it cost me about 250 to get my nuvi replaced. any ieas?

Bluetooth fix
4.2 didnt fix my blue tooth firmware update problem. it still wants to update firmware and lock up the nuvi.
Here's what tech support had me do to cure what I call the "Phantom Bluetooth Update" problem. I am referring to booting up your 760 and within a minute or two, it goes to "Updating Bluetooth firmware..." and then sits there forever.
They told me to browse to the Garmin folder on the device and delete the GUPDATE.GCD file. I copied it to my computer first, before deleting it on the Nuvi. I have not had the Phantom Bluetooth Update prompt since I did so.
Note that this has nothing to do with the "I rolled back to 3.x and Bluetooth broke" syndrome.
Just updated a brand new 770 - seems OK
I just bought a Nuvi 770 and updated it to 4.20 (and Europe Maps to 2009). It took a very long time to do that but it seems to have worked work. I can't compare with previous versions because i I didn't even try the device before updating. A quick test shows it works without noticeable lag or anything like that.

I did similarly. Curiously, when I first downloaded the new Maps (around 2.5Gb I recall) using their enhanced download software (that did four threads I think, judging by ZoneAlarm asking me four times to give it internet permission) it had a corruption within it (and it took only about half my internet pipe's speed). When I redownloaded it using just Firefox's download, it downloaded perfectly and nailed my internet download speed to the limit (Fios 20 Mbps). Even funnier is that "downloading" to the Nuvi 770 was slower than getting it from the internet.
Used it driving to work today, and the only difference I've noticed is that it seems to take a little longer before discovering it needs to 'recalculate' (as compared to 3.20).
P.S.- Flash usage in the 770 went up by about 200MB after the 2009 European map update.
thnx!!!

In looking back through just this thread, you're one of at least three to have reported this. So it seems likely that a slowness to initiate a "recalc" is part of 4.2. Still, I'll take this over the 0.2-mile voice prompt delays in the earlier v4 firmwares.

After running 4.2 for a couple days, I can't see any difference in recalculating speed between 4.2 and any of the prior versions.
4.2 Update surprise on my Nuvi-750
Hey, has anyone noticed that their destinations are actually printed on the screen? I have never noticed this before the update. Normally, I would see the flag, but never the address or the name of my selected destination and the flag. Did I just miss it before or is it really a new feature?

Could it be that Garmin left a little lag just to make their new 7X5 line more appealing?

I upgraded last night and it definitely works much slower than usual. I am on a trip down south and it is some what noticeable. Loading maps and drawing maps are what I have noticed so far. Odd indeed..

You mean like how when going to a restaurant for breakfast and you order their "plain" omelet breakfast and it comes a little burnt and the coffee had a wee bit of vinegar in it -- you figure that maybe they did that so one will come back to the same restaurant and order the deluxe version instead?
Might not work.

Routing issue
I just received "lip service" from garmin about the routing issue. They told me to upgrade my firmware, they obviously didn't look at the data they require for product support, I put in there that I have 4.2. I hope we get some help soon for this, I do 50 stops a day and the optimizing route was the reason I upgraded to the 750. I have been a loyal garmin customer for 8 yrs but I'm getting feed up with the software crap.

Sorry, couldn't help myself.
"No guts, No glory" Huh?
This is one of the most naive, laughable remarks I've seen on here. WHAT glory?! It's mostly insecurity that drive people to upgrade an unknown update. The latest must be the greatest, right? Wrong. I'm old school, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. Still on v3.0 and I may never upgrade. I don't see any benefit right now, my 760 is perfect in every way I use it. v3.0=v4.2, as far as I'm concerned.
(Of course, I understand those that have theirs broken by recent updates and need the fixes in v4.2...)
3.00 and 3.10 were problems for a lot of people on this forum!

If you look back in the forum threads to the 3.00 and 3.10 threads a lot of people were having problems with 3.00 and 3.10 including myself on my 760. There were random shut downs, lockups, stuttering and so on.
4.00 fixed those problems but created the TTS voice lag and now 4.20 has fixed that. My 760 has had every version available and without a doubt 4.20 is the best and most trouble free for me.
Nobody has to upgrade to any version if they do not want to and if your completely happy now you have no reason to. I would venture to guess that most people that buy these units never do update or very rarely update them and a lot do not even know that they can update them. I think the people that follow the forums are the exception, not the rule.

No problem here.

I tried making 5 different routes using 10 via pts each, and then opimally reordering them. I had no problems I ended up with 10 via pts just optimally adjusted.
Seems to work for me.

works fine for me also, maybe it is the chip set you have??!!i used it all day yesterday, showed 18 homes in a route , never had a issue!!!
Everyday is a GREAT day :)
It shouldn't matter
maybe it is the chip set you have??!!
this feature worked great until recently. I can only get it to work correctly if I enter the end point twice.
I just opened the phone book and entered 10 consecutive addresses with a favorite for the start and home for the end. I followed the same procedure..next...save...select route....optimally reorder points. It drops the end point, duplicates another point, inserts it to keep the via point count the same.
If I double enter the end point it works fine. Really screwy!

Garmin makes you upgrade to the latest version of their firmware before you can complete the online registration process. I'm not going to register my 750 until they convince me that all of the bugs are finally fixed.

If you delete the new "GUPDATE.GCD" file in the GPS's Garmin subdirectory that is created during registration before restarting the GPS no firmware update will actually occur.

Very Short Test
I'm later than I'd like to be to this, but for what its worth I updated my 760 yesterday with 4.20 and I've noted only improvements to its performance. Lag is gone. Map drawing and recalculating announcements are the same as they always have been.
I will be driving next week on a couple hundred mile trip and will come back her to report if anything else is worth mentioning.
