But this begs the question,

But this begs the question, those links show the places where there are red light cameras installed or soon to be installed, but not necessarily where they can legally be used?

I recently saw an article in the Boston Globe about red light cameras and it specifically made reference to their use not yet being legal (approved by the state government) yet I know the Red Light files here have several for Massachusette. So now I wonder, are they actually issuing tickets from those cameras, or are they simply installed but not yet active?

I will have to see if I can find the Boston Globe article online.

I do find it confusing sometimes...for example, NJ. I don't think they approved them until this year. But my alert went off in Clark, NJ, and the camera looks just like a traffic camera mounted high over the stoplight.

That one is now removed

I have removed the Clark, NJ location from the file, it will be accurate starting next Wednesday. Thanks for letting me know, this location was reported in April of 07.

Thanks everyone...

Thanks everyone...

Red Light Cameras

The ones in Albuquerque were on for a while. Then the Governor told the Mayor of Albuquerque that some of the fine money needed to be turned over to the state so the mayor shut them down at noon on a certain day. At 12:01 PM a large amount of people starting running lights. There were finally turned back on a few days later.

More Massachusetts red-light camera info...

That Boston Globe article I mentioned was from July 17th, 2008. And can be found here...

http://www.boston.com/cars/news/articles/2008/07/17/before_y...

or http://tinyurl.com/4695ef if the above doesn't work.

In addition I found this page on The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) site...

http://www.iihs.org/research/topics/auto_enforce_cities.html

which if you click to expand Massachusetts only shows a single camera in a town called Blackstone and it is NOT a red light camera but instead a speed camera.

So now I question if any of the Massachusetts Red Light cameras listed in the Red-light POI file here are valid. Who reported them and did they simply mistake common traffic control sensors and cameras as red-light cameras?

Cheers,
PT

EDITED: P.S. this page on that same web site lists all the states that have specific laws or no laws concerning red light or speed cameras. Interesting...

New Jersey doesn't have Red Light Cameras - Yet

New Jersey has not implemented any red light cameras....yet. The state has approved a 5 year pilot program for 12 municipalities. The chosen municipalities should be announced any day now.

Any 'red light cameras' reported to this site in New Jersey are probably traffic detection cameras that activate the traffic signals. NJDOT has been replacing the loop detectors in the pavement with these cameras recently and are often mistaken for enforcement cameras.

I have tracked my source and am removing all locations that this person submitted. I am also working on verifying the Massachusetts locations. Thanks for letting me know guys. It is really important to let me know when there are bad locations in the file. I am not able to drive by and verify all these. I really count on you guys to be my eyes.

accurate on Roosevelt Blvd.

We drove up Roosevelt Blvd. (Phila.) last Sat. and there were I think 7 alerts, all correct!

Philly does have signs warning that it's an enforcement area, but still nice to be warned by the gps as well.
