Nuvi map auto-zoom

Not like it's a big deal or anything, but I only noticed a week or 2 ago, as I get on the highway, my Nuvi 260, while in 3D mode at least, zooms out some. (Never tried in 2D.) When I get .6 miles from my exit, it starts zooming back in. I never read this in the manual or heard about it anywhere before.

I'm just curious as to the things that govern this effect.

Last night while conserving a few drops of fuel (No, I'm not a hyper-miler, but I try not to waste my $.) I let my car slow to 60MPH going up a long hill. I noticed my Nuvi zoomed in like I was exiting the highway. So I thought maybe it's speed related, rather than what type of road you're on. I tried it later and it did not repeat, however.

Maybe it thought I was going to exit, even though my route continued along the highway? Tonight I'll try to remember to not set a route and see what it does on the highway.

I have noticed with my 660 that if I am on a long stretch that I will not be turning for a while that the 660 does zoom out also. No biggie

Nuvi Map Auto-zoom

I have noticed that on my 750 when I have a long distance to travel (15 or so miles) with no road or direction changes it will zoom out to give a long distance view. If I come into a town where the road makes turns it will zoom back in until I leave the town and then it zooms back out. Kind of spooky to have something that smart is such a small box.

Night and Day

This is going to sound like a dumb question but here it goes anyway. Does the Nuvi detect night and day modes by time or amount of light it is receiving?

Speed and distance to turn

That's a standard feature of most GPS systems. And it has a small amount of customization available. The theory being that most people would prefer a larger zoomed out view while cruising and with no immediate turns. When approaching a turn, it zooms in to show more detail about the turn.

If you watch carefully, there will be speed-related steps when it zooms out. 60 MPH plus usually triggers the maximum zoom out. If you wait until you reach a steady cruising speed, you can zoom in or out as desired, and it will remember this setting. It will still zoom in as you approach a turn, but when you return to 60 MPH later, it should return to your previous zoom level. This auto-zoom is present in all 3 display modes.

There is no way to turn this off if you don't like it.

Autozoom...

When the nuvi 350 was first released, it shipped with the option to disable autozoom, just like all of Garmin's past & present hand-held mapping units. After a few firmware "updates", Garmin removed the ability to disable autozoom from the 350 and all nuvis thereafter until they "magically" added it back to the nuvi 5000 (& maybe the 8xx series...I'm not sure). There are many times that I wish I could disable autozoom...but Garmin does not feel we need this ability any longer. rolleyes
