Seeing POI's in Mapsource

I need some help finding the database points in Mapsource (and on the Legend Cx)

I am a map junkie from way back. I had a plain yellow Etrex for many years and loved it. Upgraded to Legend Cx about two years ago and finally getting around to really using the features. Mostly on the dashboard for long vacation trips, but also on hikes and getting around. A few observations and then my question.

1. Owners manual provided with the GPS is so basic as to totally be of no use
2. For as common as GPS technology has become - virtually none of my techno friends know how to exploit it to their advantage - which (sadly) makes me the resident expert!
3. This site has really helped get over a couple of hurdles
4. Garmin should simply add a 2GB SD card (or larger) to all of their units to make life a LOT simpler!
5. Garmin should provide a written link to this site with all purchases!

My Question has to do with adding the database to the Mapsource program (2008 USA Topo) - I am experimenting with the Walmat database as there are lots of them out there. I had envisionsed that each store would show up as either a logo icom or simple dot on both the GPS and Mapsource. I would notice them as I drove along and decide if I needed to go there. That does not seem to be what happens - is there a way to make them happen?

I eventually figured out where they were stored on the GPS - but cannot find them in Mapsource. I can find the nearest Walmart in the Custom POI database (GPS) and decide to navigate there, but no image shows on the display unless I "go there". I cannot find them at all in Mapsource.

I did set the proximity on all the Walmart points at 15,000 feet on the GPS to see what happens - but have not been on a trip to test them - that happens tomorrow on the way to work.

Am I overlooking something or is there a better way?

I am also interested in getting into developing custom POI's for my work (municipal engineering) and maybe (just maybe) find a fun niche to retire into. I will probably be asking more questions as I go.

Glad to see another from KS

My dad did 10 to 20 in leavenworth, and I still have lots of family in the area (he moved to town when he was 10 and moved to Emporia when he was 20).

I do not have the etrex or messed with mapsource that way. The icons you have to provide yourself for the automotive units. They will not show on the screen unless you are zoomed in about 300 feet or less. You put the csv file and the bmp in the same folder when you load the unit with poi loader. They must be named exactly alike, except for the extensions. Someone else that has the etrex will probably give you more details if you need.

.

I think you are asking how to get your Custom POIs to show up on MapSource. Is that correct?

The way to do this is to convert all of your Custom POI files (the original data files that you downloaded and/or created) to GPX format.

Then you can open them directly in MapSource. MapSource cannot currently read CSV files and you can't transfer Custom POIs from the GPS unit to MapSource directly.

as for number 5 in you run down, POI Factory is listed on Garmin's web-site

Using PoiEdit to see POI in Mapsource

Using PoiEdit seems to do the trick! Now need to trim the data (in Excel) so it makes sense for me and report back.

Will update new coordinates for the Bonner Springs KS Walmart that has moved east across the highway, and Leavenworth is building a HUGE Walmart that cannot be seen from the highway, very different location from the database. (Open may 2009)

And walleye1 - yes - I stand slightly corrected as the link from Garmin.com is how I got here - but - - - it took a long time to realize that I needed to!

I hope to figure this out and write a bit more. What an inspiring site!
