Heavy Focus On I-17

It was a top news story this AM. Up until now, not much attention has been given to I-17 but Channel 15 news indicated that was about to change.

Cool

Thanks for the heads up I will ready to input those locations as soon as I get word.

I don't want mobile locations in the file, if you would like you are more then welcome to make a separate file for the other area on the site.

I think that on a project like this we need to have communication between members that want to help out. With the cost of gas these days I don't want to have 10 or more people all working on this project. So those that would like to tackle this project express your interest in this thread.

Fpichon is usually my eyes in AZ, I will let him lead the project if he is interested.

Miss POI

Hi - is there already a file for moblie cam locations anywhere on the site? I couldn't seem to find anything.

I'll be more than happy to

I'll be more than happy to report any locations that I become aware of. Hopefully, the will list the locations in the paper, often, they do. As I become aware of them, by observation or listing, I will check it out and report to you, Miss Poi.

Im available for the West Valley.

Miss Poi,

I'll be able to verify locations on the west side of the Phoenix valley (roughly west of the I-17), sometimes farther east if needed.

The word is NJ got the go ahead to install all over the state. There is going to be 12 installed soon but no one is saying where.

Thanks for starting the "update" of AZ cameras. I 'm in Scottsdale, always keeping my eyes open for any new cameras that pop-up. As before, if I notice a descrepancy, I'll update you ASAP.

AZ Cameras

The FAQ section on the City of Phoenix web site says that red light camera locations will be listed on the site, however, I can't find them anywhere.

....sorry it took so long...

What a week - but now I intend to play catch up on this thread. Thank you for your trust Miss POI!

I am happy to assist with this project and collectively organize and verify the information from sources. I guess I am a habitual listmaker!

I'll be looking for volunteers travelling the highways in sections of AZ, to verify locations of fixed cameras as they start to appear. I'll also appreciate sources of information (links) to news stories and to gov't sites to monitor the sites designated for the cameras. Cross checking the information with visual verification will most assuredly add reliability to the poi's collected.

Thank you in advance for your contributions!

Saw the first new camera in Glendale this morning

This morning I was surprised to see the first new speed camera after the big announcement in AZ, and it wasn't there last Thursday surprised

It is located on the Loop 101 (Agua Fria Fwy), after coming out of the big curve, right after the 75th Ave overpass, to the right, at:

Latitude: N 33.66760°
Longitude: W 112.22011°

It is a very clever location, since the curve prevents the camera from being spotted until the very last second. This spot has been used by DPS cruisers and motorcycles before.

The camera enforces eastbound traffic. The posted speed limit on that stretch is 65 MPH, so in theory it will trigger at 76 MPH.

There were still construction barricades around it, so I don't think it was working yet, but guessing by the speed it went up, I'd say it will be any minute now.

I have emailed Miss-POI separately.

Krieger

I have been watching all

I have been watching all week and still have not seen any of the new location. Also, I have not seen any newspaper reports of the locations of the new cams. Newspaper reports have indicated that there were a slew of tickets given after the new cams were installed but they seem to be keeping it a secret where they are located. I hope I don't find out the hard way. Has anyone seen any published reports of the new cam locations?

I haven't seen any

I haven't seen any published reports yet either. Today, i traveled the length of I-10 from Estrella Parkway to Tucson and didn't run across a single camera. I'll be keeping my eyes open. I heard through the grapevine that the fixed location cameras are due to be installed (or at least start to be installed) at the end of October. Can anyone verify?

i'm so glad i moved away

i'm so glad i moved away from phoenix... i hated those speed cameras.

Yet another one, literally overnight!

Wow, the second one I see this week, just shy of 2 miles from the one spotted yesterday! This one is also eastbound on the 101 Loop, at:

Lat N 33.66796°
Lon W 112.18646°

65 MPH Posted speed limit. Placed right after exiting the 59th Ave overpass, to the right. Still surrounded by barricades, probably not flashing yet.

I saw more construction barricades closer to the 35th Ave exit (another 2 miles down the road), so we'll see what 'surprise' will be waiting tomorrow? shock

You need to go to the Phoenix Police section:

http://www.phoenix.gov/police/index.html

Then select the "Red Light Camera Enforcement Program FAQs" under "Hotlinks".

Note that these are only the ones operated by the city of Phoenix PD. The ones under this announcement are for DPS, who has not published the locations.

Phoenix Speed Light Cameras,etc.

Hi Miss POI,
I just drove from Palm Desert, Ca into the Phoenix area and counted five new speed cameras going up along the 10 and 101 freeways. It looks like they will be operational very soon.
Not surprised that a recent post indicated a total of 100 are in the works for the Phoenix area. I did notice that the average speed of drivers has decreased on their freeways.
I do have a question for you...
I have been a regular member of this site for around a year and am "aware" of many aspects of my Garmin 650. I have and used the Red Light Camera alerts and have tried to find out the specific purpose of the SPEED ALERT notices that show up along city streets all the time. I have attempted to find out exactly what they represent when they go off and have not found a satisfactory answer. I have looked up the FAQ and GOOGLED to try go understand how they work without success.
Hopefully, you can help me. Also, can I remove just the Speed Alerts and leave the Red Light Camera alerts active?
Thanks,
JeffSh

Third one and counting

Spotted one last night the Loop 101 southbound coming down the Bethany Home Rd. overpass. I saw it last second, out of the corner of my eye, but will pin-point and report to Miss-POI.

RE: Arizona Cameras

Krieger,
I just tried the Hotlink that you mentioned regarding the addition of Speed Cameras in the city of Phoenix and I was not able to "make it work". It did not lead me to the FAQ regarding the speed cameras.
I tried several other links on their webpage and they all worked. Maybe they are updating it.

I tried it and it and yes, it seems there are problems with that 'Hotlinks' dropdown. The GO button doesn't seem to do anything either. The way I was able to reach it was selecting a different option, hitting the broswser's back button, and then re-selecting "Red Light Camera Enforcement Program FAQs".

Cameras along Loop 101

Per a Fox News story this morning, cameras have gone up along loop 101 at the following exits: 35th Ave, 59th Ave, 75th Ave, Olive, Glendale, Bethany Home, Indian School and Mcdowell.

Here is a link to the story: http://tinyurl.com/42wd2g

Mobile Sites

While it would be worthwhile to know where the mobile sites are, keeping track of those sites in this forum will be impossible unless someone makes and keeps up a separate area or database. I certainly wouldn't rely on it though....

The cameras that the Fox 10 story are referring to are fixed, not mobile. They also refer to the next set of cameras going up along I10.

AZ law changes

AZ law used to require that violations caught on camera be served in person and then they would be treated the same as a moving violation caught/observed by a policeman. There was a story in the West Valley View on Friday that shows that AZ law has changed with respect to the freeway cameras. It appears that now the citations will be mailed to you and will not count against your insurance or points against your license unless you ignore the citations altogether. What this shows is that AZ is now moving into the realm of using these cameras strictly as cash-flow infusers. The article states that in the first nine months, Scottsdale has received $90 million in additional revenue from their camera program.

Here's a link to the article:

http://www.westvalleyview.com/main.asp?SectionID=2&SubSectio...

I agree that we should refrain from reporting locations of mobile cameras. This article also cites locations where fixed cameras are being installed now and that cameras will be activated between Oct. 17 and 22.

Miss POI, we'll keep you posted on where the locations are.

Should we make a separate thread for Phoenix camera verification until we've ferreted out all of the new camera locations?

Yesterday I noticed the new camera near 35th or 59th Ave off the Loop 101(I don't remember which), but it was not like the previous cameras at the Cactus and Shea locations. It is much smaller and pokes just above the barrier wall tucked between some trees. They are getting smaller and better hidden.

I am new here. I just purchased a Magellan 5310(got it at Costco with a $50 off coupon but the coupon was in the system wrong so it was $75 off, cha ching). Anyway, I was planning on using the My POI for saving speed camera locations as I travel all over the valley for work and then found this site so I signed up. I will be on the lookout for new cameras with a location save finger ready.

Last week, traveling the loop 101 west at about 75av, in Phoenix, I noticed a speed cam that was new. Of course, my alert did not sound. When I got home, I loaded the new database of speed cams and when I approached the same location, the next day, my alert sounded. Fortunately, someone already reported it, so it was not necessary for me to do so. It is good to know that there are those in Phoenix that are keeping up with the latest cam additions. Thank you for your vigilance.

Yes, here's another big thanks for the updates....

Have you also noticed them at 51st Ave & 35th Ave? Like you said one day they weren't there, then they were.

I would also like to help with identifying the new cameras as they go out. What is the lastest plan in coordinating this effort?

Peggy Beene,

Yes I have: I'm planning to drive by the one at the 35th Ave exit today, to pinpoint the coordinates. There are a few members in the area that have come forward offering to help, so we expect to have all locations in the database as soon as the hardware installation is confirmed visually. So far we have been posting updates for others ont his thread, but I believe FPichon had volunteered to coordinate, so I'd leave up to him if we continue to do so on this thread or create a new one wink

Thanks ramcruzer,

My suggestion would be that along your trips (many each day, I'm sure smile), if you spot a site not on the database, to please check this thread to see if anyone has not reported it already. Verification against a news report or DPS release would be great too.

As you may know, DPS will operate these cameras, so they will be appearing on highways.

New Phoenix area cameras

I have received location information for 36 new cameras in the Phoenix area. Nine of these will be active by Oct 22.

As soon as I code the intersection coordinates, Miss POI will have these.

Keep the reports coming in - it is good to get confirmation sightings of the locations! Thank you for these reports!

I'm gonna pay the $5 so I can download the latest list and throw it on the gps to get me up to date, hopefully in that months time I can become an active member so I can stay up to date on everything.

I travel all over the greater phoenix area for work, usually driving 100 miles a day or so. I'll load the current file and then try to help with making notes on new ones to the area.

Pheonix cameras

I'm headed for Pheonix on oct 19th. I'll be looking out for all those cameras as I travel around. Thanks for the tip!

Not active yet

I will be an "active" member in 10 days. I do not know what is in the file yet, but driving today all of the cameras on the Northbound Loop 101 between Shea and AZ-51 have been taken down. On the same stretch southbound all but 1 have been removed. They were black bagged for awhile and now they are completely gone, poles and all.

They have been compensating though. Just this morning I was driving on the Loop 101 North and just before the 51 interchange they had a mobile freeway van out. It was 5:00 am and luckily I was driving the speed limit. The only person behind me within a few miles was not. It was just dark enough that there was no way of seeing him until you were right on him. I saw the flash.

All over I-10 now too

According to the articles and per recent visualization, they are at a number of almost consecutive exits on the I-10 east and west from the I-17 to the 101.

I've also heard that some of the cameras will be set for only 5 miles and 10 miles over so that if you are going 70 or 75 in a 65 you will get a ticket.

Can anyone verify that new "grace" speed?

verify

jrsny wrote:

Preferably with a news article and not a speeding ticket.

This link is from ABC 15 news. It lists the cameras that went active yesterday and the future locations with a map. I guess there aren't any new locations planned for Loop 101 in the East Valley.

jrsny wrote:

"Can anyone verify that new "grace" speed? and Absolute asked for a verify, "Preferably with a news article and not a speeding ticket."

I am posting in an attempt to not add to any confusion.

The front page article in today's The Arizona Republic, 10/18/08 reads, "Who can be fined? Drivers traveling 10 mph or more above the 65 mph speed limit will be photographed."

That is the exact quote from the article, you can interpret it any way you wish.

camera not in the list

There is a speed camera going West Bound on the 101 at Hayden that is not in the current list.

Also, I noticed the camera going East Bound on the 101 just after Scottsdale road has been removed. All that seems to be up there now is the lights and poles but no cams.

The new camera going East Bound on the 101 at 35th Ave is in the list, however, it doesn't warn you until you're at the camera - almost like the camera location in the file needs to be moved a bit west in order to get the warning on time.

Thank You!

Thanks to all the contributors who have been reporting the sightings, and for the news articles with the locations of current and future Phoenix area cameras.

The 6 locations for the AZ-101 and the 3 locations west valley I-10 are entered and the remaining 27 coded and ready for entry.

Thanks everyone
