Does this FW update affect the 260?
Sorry, Not sure if I have seen anything mentioned. I have been watching this thread off and on for a while and have been reluctant to do any updates.

On the contrary...

Sad part of all this is that finding a guinea pig to test the coming fix for this update or all future updates is going to be hard. As they say once bitten twice shy. Fortunatly as I posted in another thread I was on vacation when this update appeared and was able to read this and other threads before I made a mistake.
Maybe we should draw cyber straws, see who downloads the update.

On the contrary, those afflicted with the 4.0 bugs will probably be desperate for a quick fix, so there'll be no shortage of "testers".

No

I think this calls for a new POI-Factory 'badge'. To be awarded to anyone brave enough to apply a future Garmin update, to unit that's out of warranty rolleyes

Sorry About My Insensetivity

My bad, of course those of you having real problems with 4.0 need the fix and I had no intention of belittling your problems, but I know after this fix is out, I will not be running any future updates until I see some Guinea pig has done it first.

What Problems?

I called Garmin late yesterday and talked to a tech person and asked him if he had any idea when a new update would be available that would fix the problems that their release 4.00 caused a lot of us folks. He said "WHAT PROBLEMS"? I explained about the lag, audio and locking problems that I and many other 7.xx Garmin users were experiencing and he said that he had not heard anything about these complaints! He had me do the old hard reset routine like it was the magic fix all for everything. All that did was make me lose my favorites and set my unit back to all it's default settings. Just more grief by making me spend time putting everything back the way it was.
I would suggest that anyone with a Garmin 7.xx GPS that is having problems call Garmin everyday at 1-800-800-1020 and ask them when a fix will be available. That is what I'm going to do. Don't let them talk you into doing a hard reset. Maybe if we pester them enough, they might acknowledge that they have a problem that needs to be fixed. It is almost as if they do not want to fess up to their dastardly deed. Denying the problem, taking the 4.00 update off their website, not mentioning anything about this problem on their webpage and acting like everything is just fine in Garminville smells like a cover-up to me.

Another issue with v4

I found today that when crossing into a different map tile that the new tile into which I am driving does not load. (I get a message "drawing"; ten miles down the road it was still drawing.) I.e., I live close to a state line. My state and the adjacent one are in 2 different map segments. When I crossed into the next state there was no map for the area I was passing into. To get the map back I had to unplug the unit, turn it off, then plug it back in again. This phenomonen happened in both directions.

I could kick myself for loading v4. I'd assumed that if there were a problem all that I'd have to do is delete everything on the GPS and reinstall the old firmware from the backup I made. I don't know anything about the design of software and firmware, but can't imagine that someone would be allowed to do something that would exempt one from rolling back to an earlier version.

Its especially agrivating because we are starting out on a three week trip next week.

Happens all the time in electronics firmware

Happens all the time in electronics such as DVD players, Blu-ray players, digital cameras, etc. most will allow an upgrade to a higher number newer firmware version but almost none will allow a downgrade to an earlier firmware version.

I was surprised when I found out that Garmin was allowing the backdated firmware installs at all.

That is true. The big difference is that Garmin has quite a history of releasing half-baked releases and leaving the users to do the testing. We've become quite used to it, because, hey ... you can always fall back to the previous version.

It's the fact that they removed that ability -without warning - and without getting their act together first, that's annoyed me.

I've suffered this sort of pain, with a cheapo Taiwanese hard-disk PVR, but for a main-stream market leader to pull such a stunt, well...

NO NEWS TO REPORT

Still nothing new to report from Garmin's website, so the saga with the missing 4.0 update continues.

Ver 3.20

I received a 770 with version 3.20 installed. Today I started navigating to a location I had previously found. I selected the destination in previously found, then clicked on go. I followed the route without detours. After several miles (less than 3 miles) The screen froze. I turned off the power, then powered up again and selected the same destination. I hadn't any further problems. So that's once.......

I am contemplating going back to 2.90.....

I have a 760 with 3.20 also.
I had one lock-up on power up while loading maps, and a second lock-up while browsing MP3's. Both were corrected by cycling power. Also had a few voice stutters with Jack while navigating.
I'll give it a few more days and if no more problems I'll leave 3.20 on, but if I have any more glitches, I'll backdate to 2.90 too.

Inside info

Does anyone else have any "inside information" regarding the release for the fix to 4.0? smile
It does sound like we're all better off waiting than hearing of an imminent release (i.e. last week) and being disappointed when it doesn't happen when we were expecting it. I suspect Garmin will be more careful/diligent with this fix and maybe even road test it before releasing firmware 4.?

June v3.1 - August v4.0 - October v4.?

Don't hold your breath. I suspect that the next update will happen on the regular schedule (every other month)and will not be given any more scrutiny then was given to previous versions. To change the direction of a large ship takes a fair amount of time and energy. It is a bit optimistic to expect things to be different so soon. 6 months from now might be a more realistic expectation for software to be more tested.

version 4.0

It is truly amazing that everyone I talked to at Garmin including customer service and SOFTWARE SUPPORT are not aware of the problems with 4.0 and that it had been removed from their site. After being on hold they came back and said the fix would be out today or at the latest early this week. Customer service did offer to replace my unit but I don't particularly want a refurbished unit so I will wait it out this week to see what happens.

4.0

That's pretty lame considering 4.0 is still available. Is this the Area 51 crew...hahaha. I hope they fix this soon. I'm thinking of getting a 755t. If those are preloaded with v4...hmmm...I wonder if they are and now they have to fix this before they release the new series.

Anyway, v4 is still up if they don't want to admit to it:

750 updated from 4.00 to 4.10

I just updated my 750 from 4.00 to 4.10 using webupdater. So far it's working just fine, no stutter using Jill TTS, turns are announced in time. Of course I can't comment on bluetooth since the 750 doesn't have it. I figured since I already had version 4.00 installed and was having all the problems everyone has been talking about what have I got to loose? No pain, No gain, right? I say if you are one of the ones that have 4.00 installed now, go for it. Or do you really want to wait for the next update?

Interesting

Bassman says he does not have the delayed turn announcements, but mine still does. I'm curious to see what others experience, because 4.10 did not fix my delayed announcement problem.

I for one will be taking my Garmin back and getting something else. I am fed up with Garmin's antics.

Downloading now.

But I can't test it until tomorrow, I'll post my findings!

Mine still has the .1 mile turn announcement delay but everything else works fine.

Has anyone tried rolling back to an earlier firmware like 3.10 after installing 4.10?

Testing via Simulator Mode on Nuvi 750
Using the GPS Simulator Mode:

On my 2.0Mile test using city streets, I noticed no lag at all.

On my 6.9 Mile test using the highway I noticed no lag that locks the map while she talks. However, when Jill says .06 miles it’s actually .04 miles. Ugh!

Poi Alerts running smoothly.

As for reverting back to earlier software; I just tried by deleting the GUPDATE.GCD and installing software 2.90 over it. No Joy!
It looks like I have to use the Nuvi 7xx 4.00 Firmware Fix found here to go back.

Got a reply from Garmin about my .2 mile delay problem

I got this from Garmin a few minutes ago about the aggravation with the .2 lag problem with my 780. At last they finally acknowledged the problem instead of the "what problem" response I had been getting in the past.

Thank you for contacting Garmin International. I am happy to assist
with this.

The software engineers are working on a new release of software.
Unfortunately, we have no ETA on a release date, as of yet.

I am sorry for any inconvenience and frustration you have encountered.

I still have about a .1 mile lag at 25 mph. It's better than version 4.00, but not as good as 3.1.

Mine was opposite

I had 4.0 on a 750, and had no problems, so I updated to 4.1 and now have all the problems with TTS that have been discussed here. Non-TTS English works just fine, but I want TTS. I sent a "pointed" email to Garmin 2 days ago, and haven't heard a peep out of them yet. Somewhere in this thread somebody (sorry - don't remember who) listed all the .exe files for the updates. I grabbed one of the 3.? updates and tried to roll mine back. After it said it was successful, I started the unit and it still had the 4.1 update on it....... Guess I'm out of luck until 4.2 comes along......

I updated last night....initially hung on startup right after the upgrade. So I powered it off...then back on, and really have not experienced any noticeable issues so far.
