The Garmin User Manual

Why is the Garmin user manual so bad? Without this site (POI factory) and other tips, tricks I found on the internet I would not be able to take full advantage of my Garmin. My Nuvi 350 has so many features and everyday I find out something new about it. It would have been so easy for Garmin to put these features and nuances in a manual or at least have this information available on their website. Instead, I have to search and find out this information elsewhere. Not very good advertising for Garmin, however, I'm not sure the other GPS manufacturers are any better.

Really? I thought the user

Really? I thought the user manual was full of great info. It covered everything about my device. Did you download it off the garmin site?

Manual

I downloaded mine from the Garmine site and thought it was quite good.

I don't think what amounts

I don't think what amounts to a pamphlet can compare to a full feature manual of operation and capability. This has been a continuing rap on the Garmin units. Where are the specifications, for example, of the device like memory size?

Hmmm

They really can't tell you how much free space you have left, it would all depend on what you have loaded and what you deleted. But if you right click on the drive letter and check properties the device is 1,989,275,648 bytes and on my 760 I have 484,634,624 bytes free.

It's just a a big hard drive as far as windows is concerned.

EDIT - Not sure what you consider a pamphlet but 60 pages is pretty good sized for a user manual.

If I Owned Garmin,

I would have Gary Hayman over see all the manuals. He has single handed defined what a manual should be. http://home.comcast.net/~ghayman3/garmin.gps/

The Garmin 350 user manuel

The Garmin 350 user manuel isn't bad by any means, but there is no comparison to the amount of really useful information that is available here on this site. And that doesn't even address the help one can get on the sometimes rare individual problems. It's comparing apples and oranges again and the real kicker is, you guys don't seem to know how really great you are.

Well, I had my greatest

Well, I had my greatest difficulty trying to load custom POI's. I only found out about creating subdirectories to house a few at a time from this web site, not the manual. It seems like any detailed information comes from another source.

My master reset is actually performed different than described in the manual. Well, I'm just glad this website is available. Thanks

User Manual/Guide

Is the user manual the book you hunt for every where and try to find (then maybe read) when all else fails?

The manual

The manuals are fine...for basic operations.

Now then, if you had a manual that gave good detail on the use of POI Loader along with its limitations and work arounds, tip and tricks, and all the lil goodie bits of info that come along, it would be a pretty thick manual.

But I have to agree, Garmin could do a lil bit better 'beyond the basics'.
Or.. on the last page just put in big bold letters:

VISIT POI-FACTORY.COM to take greater advantage of your newly purchased Nuvi!

Ya.. Dattle do it.. grin

Garmin nuvi 255 - Booklet

I couldn't agree more with your comments when applied to my new Garmin GPS. It came with a small booklet and the only download related manual was a quick start guide. It included all the "basic" features, but nothing else. I had to resort to "trial and error" to download and install some POI information from this site and POIFriend.com. I took a chance and deleted all the additional language files to free up some space, although I do have a 2 Gig MicroSD card installed. I found out that I had to create a POI directory, expand any ZIP files I downloaded, and overwrite all the Custom POIs every time I need to update. Garmin could offer a lot more technical support and insight into adding POI and other features.

Thank you, that is exactly

Thank you, that is exactly what I am talking about. Also, I have no idea when updates come out for my Nuvi. I can't find that on the Garmin Website either. I just periodically go there and check to only learn there are no updates available.

Garmin Update Software

I have been able to check and successfully update the software for my Garmin Nuvi 255 with their "Webupdater" software.

How long are updates posted

MM - any idea how long the updates are posted on this page?

I ask because it thought the Nuvi 2xx had a firmware upgrade to 5.0 that's not listed. Have not done the 5.0 update on the 260 because of a past bad experience. Watched a few threads on the 5.0 upgrade and it doesn't look like anyone has had any problems so I might try it. Sure wish Garmin would give more details in the change log smile

.

Hmmm, interesting.

I've usually found that the What's New page lists the updates on the same or next day.

But the nuvi 2xx seems to be missing completely from that list.

Don't know why.

Good Info..............

I found a lot of good information on this site for my 750!
