Change History
Changes made from version 3.10 to 4.00:
Improvement in Mad Maps performance
Added support for more GPI files
Corrected an error in MSN news reports where a report could be lost

I did install the update and the 760 still works, didn't brick it, so far so good. Will post back if any problems come up.

So it appears they have tweaked something involving POI files!!! Who's gonna load this and let us know how it works?? I'm too scared after the 3.10 fiasco I experienced.

I'll do it.

I'll try the new update.

I tried the new update (4.00)to see if it fixed the problem with TourGuides.

I built a tourGuide at my home location, using MapSource. I loaded it into my 750.

After powering up and going to MAP MODE, I got the TourGuide alert. amd everything still worked .

NO FREEZE UP!!!!
NO PROBLEMS seen.........

I still works, reloaded the test TourGuide and ran again

What Icon to get what directions?

When my alert comes in I touch the TourGuide icon in the lower left corner. It takes me to the TourGuide screen and the mp3 alert plays again. After it plays I touch the GO Icon and I get a 50 70 75 foot route to travel to and it says Arive at Gold Vault on right!!!

It works good for me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Scared of what????

If you load it and it soen't work you only have to roll it back to the last one that worked (ver2.90).

It is simple to do.

If you rolled back to 3.00 you didn't fix anything, the problem was still there. You needed to role back to ver 2.90.

See scared of what you were on 3.00 and did you really experience ant thing????

There were only certain conditions that had to be done to cause any problem, and if the problem did occur you only had to turn it off then on and everything was back to normal..

Great news! From what I can deduce, the Mad Maps routine may have been the culprit.

I will be installing and testing tonight.

Change History said nothing about this

One of the complaints seen on this site concerning some of the Automotive GPS units is that, when the unit is stationary, the icon for your car will jump around a bit and the speed will vary and change between 0 and 4 mph. This has been especially true when first turning the unit on and after satellite acquisition.

After loading 4.0 update I have noticed that the icon jumping about is greatly lessened and the speed remains at a rock solid 0 MPH. grin

update was dated 8/18

I was wondering that myself since Garmin dated the update 8/18. So it should have been available since the beginning of last week.

When it came up in the updater last night, before I let it load, I came here to see if anyone had had any experience with it. Alas I found no comments. So I decided to be a guinea pig for it.

Loaded......

Strange. I checked updates yesterday and didn't get the notice for this one. I checked just now and it's there for the web updater so I let it install.

Not using tour guides, I wasn't experiencing any issues with 3.10 but it's very cool that those who were having problems are reporting that the issues have been resolved.

Thanks for posting about the update.

Icon moving or jumping around

The reason the icon jumps around and registers speed and direction is that when the unit first starts to acquire the sats it may have only 3 or 4 sats at first and that gives only a 50 to 70' accuracy range. As more sats are aquired the accuracy slowly climbs to around 20' when 8 to 10 have been found and as that happens the icon moves to the more accurate real location and as it moves it registers speed and direction even though it isn't really moving.

On the garmin units just hold your finger in the upper left area of the screen for a few seconds where the sat strength icon display is and the sat screen will appear and you can actually watch as the sats are acquired and identified and it will also display the accuracy range change in real time.

What happened to 3.2-3.9

I wonder if they've been working on problems internally and finally released v4.0 now. Going from 3.1 to 4.0 is quite a jump.

I was thinking the same thing. Going to 4.0 from 3.1 normally means a major software modification not some minor tweaks.

Sat acquisition

The other people that I saw mention it and I saw the jumping around even after getting a solid lock with many satellites having been acquired.

The behavior I saw in my post update has a rock solid icon even in the early acquisition stages.

Weird Navigation After 4.0 update

I notice something strange after I updated to 4.0.
While navigating, my nuvi 760 stated at the top of the screen and TTS spoke that the next turn was a left turn.
However the magenta route showed the next turn to be a right turn.
I will try to duplicate this again tomorrow. If it does it again, I will backdate to 2.90 and see what happens.
This happend while driving in Kansas City, Garmin's backyard. You would think they should get that right.

3.0 to 4.0...

Never had a problem with 3.0 and never upgraded to 3.1 so I'll be making the jump from 3.0 to 4.0. We'll be going on our last camping trip for the summer this weekend. Don't want to go out on a yet "untested-by-me" firmware on a new road trip, so I'll be upgrading mine next week. We'll see what happens...

3 to 4

I will be taking Version 4 on my 750 for a test drive today.

Garmin doesn't know right from left

I had the same problem last week. I am using Version 3.10 and started on a new route. My first turn required a left turn. My Garmin 760 clearly said to turn right when it showed a left turn on the screen. There were 2 of us in the car and we were both surprised to hear it. All other turn announcements after that one were correct.

This happened with Version 3.10, so Version 4.0 is not the problem but also does not fix that particular problem.

Only the first turn

I've noted the same thing. I attributed it to the Nuvi not knowing which direction my car was pointed was headed before I left driveway or parking lot. That first turn is the only time it gave me the wrong verbal turn direction.

Lag

I upgraded my 750 - and since, I've noticed a lag in the voice compared to the screen - The "in 1 mile..." comes at 0.8 miles away from the event. I've been on the road with it yesterday after updating, and today.

My nuvi 750 came with 3.20 which was not available on the website at Garmin, and now I am hearing that they already came with 4.0. WOW, that is quick changes in software. So is this support all 7xx series? I need to check updates.

Yes

Yes....... Upgraded my 750 yesterday - used it today, and haven't experienced any problems.

Thanks for the tip on displaying the satellite acquisition screen. I don't remember seeing that info in any of the literature I've read. My 750 is inconsistent in the time it takes to acquire satellites. Sometimes it will pick them up within seconds, and other times it will take several minutes, even when starting it up in the same location. This display screen will at least help me see what's happening.

...better than before

Pleased that the Nuvi 750 system hang is gone, but noticed slight slowdown in nav mode as mentioned earlier.

Much better performance

I loaded the 4.0 update yesterday in my Nuvi 760 I drove around all day today and noticed the hang time is gone. I did not notice a slowdown in the nav mode. If there is a slowdown it must be very slight.

TourGuide problem is NOT fixed

I installed 4.0 this AM and loaded my "test" TourGuide located .5 miles from my house. Sure enough, it crashed my 760 after booting up and I selected "Show Map". It's a simple single TourGuide GPX with an MP3 announcement. That part works fine; it just crashes after going into the Menu or selecting Show Map or picking a Favorite and tapping Go To. Guess I'll turn TourGuides off again...

Same here

I also noticed a considerable lag in Navigation Notices. I will give it a short period of time to see if it self-corrects before going back.

As mentioned, so far, so good!

Make it 3

My 750 is a little late in giving directions and it really chops up street names that are more than two syllables or multiple words.

It pronouned Brea Canyon Road as Bree Can erd with a pause between the can and erd. It was not consistent in its errors. The next alert for the same off-ramp was pronounced more clearly.

Mine Burst Into Flames

After updating to 4.0, mine spontaneously combusted while I was traveling, incinerating my car and most of my flesh. I am currently undergoing reconstructive surgery and extensive physical therapy at the hospital burn unit as a result. Other than that, the firmware made a lot of improvements. I highly recommend it.

Oh, the humanity...

Strange that some people are having problems, other not and it got rid of some. I know I can't go back to earlier firmware now. It's locked.

Maybe it depends on type and where installed

John,

Maybe we can narrow this down;

Are your custom TGs installed to internal or external memory?

Are yours gpx, csv, or mixed?

No locks so far

I've never had any tour guides loaded, but was getting the lock ups with v3.1. So far, no problems with v4.

Getting Concerned

What really worries me is that Garmin is spending time and resources to prevent users from doing certain things. For example, other people have reported that once they have installed version 4.0 they could not downgrade to an earlier version. I tried and could not do it also.

So instead of fixing bugs and improving the software, Garmin is spending time locking down the software!!
