Late turn directions and disappointment in Garmin.
What really worries me is that Garmin is spending time and resources to prevent users from doing certain things. For example, other people have reported that once they have installed version 4.0 they could not downgrade to an earlier version. I tried and could not do it also.
So instead of fixing bugs and improving the software, Garmin is spending time locking down the software!!
That is a sad reality for sure. And it is just a small step towards locking down the hardware completely. Eventually, all custom POI's and home grown Tourguides will become a thing of the past as well. However, Garmin will offer all kinds of cool Tourguides, POI's, special routing capabilites and who knows what other whiz bang ability through a subscrition service on their web site.
I guess I have learned my lesson to not be so hasty in keeping up to date. I "upgraded" my firmware to 4.0 with the thought I would be able to back date if I have a problem. What I have noticed is that the nav alerts are .1 to .2 miles late with this version where they were not a problem before - actually being told to turn AFTER I passed the turn. If it is so that I can't backdate to a version without this issue(trying tonight). It is the last Garmin for me.
Late turn directions.
What I mean by late turn directions is Jill will say "Turn left in .2 miles" AFTER I have passed the corner to turn on. Other alerts wil go something to the effect of "In .7 miles, turn right". The problem is when I look at my 760 Nuvi screen, it shows that I am .5 miles from the turn.
Looks good so far !
Tried the 4.0 today did good no lock up.
Had all poi's and mp3 going with no problems.
When I started back I did all kinds of detours tring to lock up unit and no problems.
I was putting the detours in so fast it would be giving detour directions for the one I had passed already.
Looks go to me so far.

earlier versions
I have tried to revert back to version 3.0 and I am not able to do so. Maybe if garmin receives enough complaints about this, they may take steps to fix this hopefully.

locking up
i just wrote an e-mail directly to my Garmin Tech support contact to let him know the reason:
i am using FW 3.00 without any problems, until today and i was fortunate to figure out why.
i had a tourguide give me an alert while i started the gps, i then wated a few seconds before pressing the menue button/ where to? and the unit locked up. i did the same 3 times in the same area and got the same lockup. When i drove out of the tourguide area i was able to press menue button/ where to?/ go home
so that leads me to believe that the problem lies in the tourguide program.
i just thought to pass on this information so that can be fixed for future FW updates.
( i am aware of the new FW 4.00, but hear alot of issues with that one as well, and also not being able to roll back to a previous version once downloaded and therefore stay away from it)
thanks

NO GOING BACK :-(
installed the new s/w version 4.0 update, and now cannot go back to older versions
I tried it too - it definitely will NOT downgrade, using any normal mechanism. Also, it does something new, in that it deletes the GUPDATE.GCD file.
Maybe we'll be stuck at V4.0 forever
My 760's going on a 750 mile trip this weekend - so here's hoping it's still functional!

Maybe try copying the "GUPDATE.GCD" older version from your prior installation backup set to replace the newer 4.0 "GUPDATE.GCD" version just prior to running the older version firmware exe file. Just a guess but it may work.

Lag indeed
I upgraded my 750 - and since, I've noticed a lag in the voice compared to the screen - The "in 1 mile..." comes at 0.8 miles away from the event. I've been on the road with it yesterday after updating, and today.
I took my newly 4.0 updated 760 and found that it too has quite a lag in the voice direction. On city streets it is telling me to turn after I enter the intersection of the turn, rendering the last voice direction completely useless.
"GUPDATE.GCD" file is still there on mine after 4.0 update
My 750 has a GUPDATE.GCD file... but then I did the update with the Mac version of Web Updater, maybe it doesn't do something the Windows version does.
I updated mine on a PC with the downloaded 4.0 exe file instead of webupdate program and just checked and the "GUPDATE.GCD" file is still in my unit's "GARMIN" directory as always.

Voice Lag
I too am experiencing the voice lag after updating to 4.0.
This is getting ridiculous. Is it too much to ask for Garmin to release updates without introducing new bugs!!!
And to rub salt into our wounds, now we can't revert back to an earlier firmware. So we are stuck with the new bugs until Garmin feels nice enough to fix them.
My days as a Garmin customer may be coming to an end.

I also noticed the voice announces distance about .1 miles more distance than the distance shown on the screen but seems to be ok when I get near to the turn.

Presumably then, it only deletes GUPDATE.GCDs, that it "doesn't like the look of" ... ie earlier versions?

That appears to be correct...
Presumably then, it only deletes GUPDATE.GCDs, that it "doesn't like the look of" ... ie earlier versions?
I also updated using a downloaded file. The GUPDATE.GCD file was there until I tried to revert to 2.90. I then copied a GUPDATE.GCD file from a backup file and it deleted it when I started the 760, then I copied the backup GUPDATE.GCD file and ran 2.90 again, same deal, it deleted the file... It appears I'm stuck with 4.0 unless I can figure a way to beat their system....
Edit: I am now going to copy a backup of my nuvi to the nuvi to see if I can then revert... I'm not sure I don't like 4.0 but I do like the challenge...

GPX only
John,
Maybe we can narrow this down;
Are your custom TGs installed to internal or external memory?
Are yours gpx, csv, or mixed?
My 'test' TourGuide is a single item GPX file. One location, one MP3. Loaded to internal memory. For testing purposes, I used the "rest area ahead" MP3 from this site. I also have the rest areas CSV and use the same MP3 for that one. The rest area files have never caused any problems. It's only when I load and activate my TestTourGuide.GPX file that it crashes during boot up. I just set the location to an intersection close by. I have also started over and created a new TourGuide from scratch just in case there was something bad with my GPX file. Oh, and since I'm using a GPX file, I have the distance set in the GPX entry itself and use Express mode with POILoader when it's loaded.
There is only one Up here
Hi All
I have not upgraded to v4.0 yet and not about to until I hear it will allow us to revert to an earlier software version.
Why a company like Garmin would even think this helps is a mystery. They must be really sure that their software works just right the first time without any "bugs" to lock a unit. Even Windows would not think of doing this. Remember Beta tape format it was locked and now nowhere to be found.
I like others will wait for a update that is just that, an update to improve the product and make it more functional, not make it useless due to bad programing.
So Garmin when you read this I only have one question ?????? make your product unusable if loaded with bad software and then make us wait until a "fix" is provided. In the meantime the unit would be worthless. (repeating myself)
We should have the ability to revert to an earlier software version just to get by until the a proper update is provided.
If this happens one too many times I like others might just never come back or say why do we need this device, we have survived the last 2000+ years without it.

why 4.0
I spent more then 20 years in IT before I retired. It was always our practice to name a major rewrite of software 2.0 or 3.0, if we were required to do patches they would be named 2.1, 2.2, etc.
I just don't see the major rewrite in Garmin 4.0.
Does anyone know what Garmin is doing with their naming convention?
Wanted -Woman with GPS -send picture of GPS
They made it non-regressable
The major part of 4.0 is that they made it so you can't go backward. They just "forgot" to mention this in the update log.

And yes I deleted all the files from my 760 prior to copying the backup to it...
As I said in another post: I may be incorrect, but I believe it's part of an effort to stop hackers... The new version of MapSource took away the ability to add unlock codes manually, you now have to go through Garmin to unlock maps. This is no big deal if you purchase your maps from Garmin or a Garmin dealer, but if you use pirated maps it will stop you. It's part of Garmin’s effort to protect their software/maps from pirating, and we are caught up in their effort.

Voice Lag - TTS Only ???
I also noticed the voice lag after upgrading to v4.0 using both Jill and Jack TTS voices. However, I do not notice the voice lag when using the non-TTS voice file.
Has any one else had this same experience?
Voice Lag
I use the Jill voice and have noticeable lag since this upgrade. The lag is so bad at times that it tells me to make a turn 5-10 seconds after I pass the turn.
I guess I am stuck with this "upgrade" until the next "fix" since I cannot downgrade to a previous version. My recommendation is to skip this version.

I tried both the TTS and non TTS voices but the lag seemed to be almost identical on my 760. Went back to TTS voice and will wait for the fix from Garmin before doing anything more.

Ver. 4.0 Gone
FWIW, I am happy with 3.0 and did not update to 3.1 or 4.0. Out of curiosity I visited Garmin's download center (on 9/1/08) and found only ver 3.1 available for download for the Nuvi 7XX series. Do you suppose Garmin has withdrawn the 4.0 update?

I wonder if they fixed this version to allow those that upgraded to 4.0 to go back to an earlier version.

I had a 750 and this 4.0 stuff messed it up. I returned it to Sam's Club due to a flickering screen but the 4.0 update made it slow. I don't know if I'll get another or wait for the 755t to come out.
Make sure to read all of it before you try the reset to 2.2. Those with bluetooth are losing that function.

I think I'll NEVER upgrade my firmware...
Never is a long time, but the way things are going, I'm happy with version 3.0. I was planning to upgrade this week but from what I've read so far, I see my 760 operating on 3.0 for a very looooooooooooonnnngggg time!
Horrible lag in turn instructions
I upgraded my 750 - and since, I've noticed a lag in the voice compared to the screen - The "in 1 mile..." comes at 0.8 miles away from the event. I've been on the road with it yesterday after updating, and today.
I also noticed a considerable lag in Navigation Notices. I will give it a short period of time to see if it self-corrects before going back.
I tried it out today while traveling to a couple of different work sites. It was horrible. It told me to turn after I'd already turned. It told me to turn in .8 miles when the countdown already showed .6 miles. The delay in navigational instructions is truly horrid.

Firmware 4.00 Upgrade
Spoke with Garmin yesterday, 45 minutes and after they emailed some bluetooth files, they have given up trying to fix my Nuvi 760's dead bluetooth function. I'll have to send it back and get a refurbished unit. My unit is only 7 months old, and the Garmin 4.00 upgrade has beaten the cr-p out of me and the Nuvi trying in vain to recover a remedy.

Finally gave up. I thought I'd post the email i received from a supervisor."
-----------------------------------------------------
The first step in correcting the issue would be doing the unit software update using the web updater. At the end of the updater, you want to make sure you put a check mark in the Bluetooth update and any update that is not a text, voice, or vehicle. If that does not correct the issue, the next step is to do the master reset by turning the unit off, then pressing and holding in on the lower right corner, and saying yes to clear user data. The 3rd step if the master reset does not work is the back door Bluetooth update.
1) Click view map
2) Speed in the lower left
3) Press and hold firmly on the big mph circle
4) As soon as another screen pops up, let go
5) It should be the shutdowns screen
6) Click on next until it says bluetooth up at the top
7) Click on Updt PR
8) Say yes to update
9) When finished, click on quit

Regressing Breaks Bluetooth
Did you attempt to downgrade it to a previous version by downloading files? I hope Version 4.0 alone didn't break the bluetooth.
The 4.0 upgrade just causes poor operation. It's when you regress and backdate to another version using this forums posted application to do so, it ruins the bluetooth function. It does allow( force ) the nuvi to revert back to the prior version. Should work great on a nuvi 750 that doesn't have bluetooth!

I think you're right, but with all that's gone on from Garmin recently, I worry that doing the backdate may mess up the new firmware that will eventually/soon(?) replace the faulty 4.0. I'll live with my 750 with its 0.2-mile delayed Voice Of Karen and hope that a fix arrives soon.
Darn, each time I log into POI Factory and see a Firmware 4 messages with more than a few replies, I anxiously go to it hoping that someone's reported the fix has arrived.....still waiting.
I'll volunteer to be guinea pig for the eventual update as it's hard to imagine the fix to be worse than the current v4 update.

I have noticed some other new bugs on my 760 since upgrading to the 4.0 software. Sometime when I turn it on, it hangs on the "Loading Maps" screen and requires a reset. I have also noticed that when doing a POI search, like for gas stations, I page down to the second page and the up arrow stays grayed out 20% of the time. To see the first page of results again, you have to start the search over.
