'POI Verifier II' Creates 'Priority' Speed Alerts (@mph)

UPDATED:
Added the option to create 'Priority' speed alerts based on a combination of the mph figure given in field 3 and user input. For more info, see:
http://www.poi-factory.com/node/19045

POI Verifier II v2.0.1.1 will:
1. Verify POIs conform to Garmin's csv format.
2. Removes text headers from the beginning of the POI file.
3. Removes leading and ending spaces on each field.
4. Removes quotes from the Longitude and Latitude entries.
5. Checks the Longitude and Latitude values against user selectable parameters of '48 States', 'US 50 States, Canada, PR, and VI', or 'World' parameters.
6. Verifies longitude is field 1 and latitude is field 2.
7. Removes all fields over 4 to conform to Garmins' csv POI format.
8. Fills empty fields 3 and 4 with a space to conform to Garmins' csv POI format.
9. Gives the option to remove '@' and numbers from the file name to eliminate the alert if it isn't desired.
10. Gives the option to check for duplicate entries in the POI file.
11. Gives the option to modify the POI file to correctly display line breaks in the nuvi 350/360.
12. Gives the option to convert the nuvi 350/360 linebreaks to standard linebreaks
13. Gives the option to remove all linebreaks from fields 3 and 4.
14. Gives the option to create a file of only the POIs in the selected state.
15. Gives the option to swap the longitude and latitude coordinates.
16. Gives the option to 'Selectively' remove duplicate POIs.(Hot Keys added.)
17. Converts odd character count in field 3 to even, 'user selectable' for either all odd character count or only odd character count starting at 3 incremented by 4.
18. Converts POI files with degree/minute/seconds coordinates to a POI file with decimal coordinates.
19. Configures a 4-field POI into a 3-field POI.
20. Reformats and converts most all Garmin formatted csv POIs to TomTom's OV2 format. (Many thanks to 'Rick2' for his help in making this option possible.)
NEW:
21. Creates 'Priority' speed alerts (@mph) based on a combination of mph figures given in field 3 and user input.

... And retains the original POI file unchanged.

Free upgrade to all v2.x.x.x users. Thank you to all who supported this project ... greatly appreciated.

Wow, great job RT, thank you so much for the time and energy you invest to make this program so fantastic.

It verifies/modifies the POI Files with 'Garmin Format'. You can use it to get the files 'prepped' before converting to Magellan format. It will swap the longitude and latitude (putting latitude first field, longitude second field) if that's what your Magellan requires. Other than that, it does no converting to Magellan format.

If you create POIs for uploading to the 'Factory', it will show errors (including 'possible' duplicates) and correct many. As stated, it will now allow 'selective' deleting of duplicate entries in the POI file.

Thanks.

Between this thread's first posting and the website, there's not much more I can tell you. If you would email me with specific questions concerning the program, I'll answer them.

Thanks.

IMHO

POI Verifier is an invaluable tool when you are generating your own POI files.
Especially helpful in finding your typo and format errors for .csv format.
Was very instrumental in the building and in the maintaining of the Rest Areas Combined file.
Also, I tend to modify other POI files that I download to my preferences - after modifying POI Verifier finds my errors !!

Great application !

A great piece of software just got better.

Thanks for your efforts.

Needs one more tiny improvement

RT, thanks for the enhancements. I'd like to see one more.
The Verifier has an option of adding a "." to all name fields that are of an odd length. I'd like that changed to all name fields that are either EXACTLY 3 or 7 or 11 or (n+4). Those are the only lengths that cause the display problem. The other odd lengths don't display incorrectly.

The lengths actually vary by unit - some don't suffer at all.

Actually, this option was removed in v1.0.1.5 and newer; and, since removing it, this is the first comment I've seen on this feature.

Am I correct that you would like two 're-length' options:
1. Make field 3 and 4 even length whenever the field is odd.
AND
2. Make field 3 and 4 even length whenever the field is odd by any length starting with 3 incremented by 4.

If anyone is interested in these features, please email me at the contact link. If there is enough interest I'll add both.

Confused

drbillk - If you create POI files, it is indispensable. It can also come in handy if you are downloading large POI files created by others. In very large files, there are invariably duplicate entries. Sometimes there are swapped coordinates or incorrect coordinate formats. This program will correct those errors for you.

Added to POI Verifier II

I added this option. You can select whether you want all odd character count in field 3 converted to even; or only the character count starting at 3, incrementing by 4, converted to even.

In addition, I also added the option to convert a file that contains degree coordinates to decimal coordinates.

I really like the v2...

The ability to change the parameters for duplicates is very useful for the combined wal-mart file. There are a number of locations which have a Sam's club and a wal-mart at the same location. One thing that would be nice or maybe it can be done now, the ablility to edit the coordinates while checking them. I manually went through the duplicates and added a 1 to the end of the coordinate, which is virtually no change but gets rid of the location as a duplicate...

Maybe on v2.1... Anyway thanks again for this great update... grin

This may help you if you're working with the 'Wal-Mart_US.csv' file.

POI Verifier II (as well as the original) has the option to change the variance of the coordinates when searching for duplicates. This is included because many actual duplicates do not have the exact same coordinates. The max allowed variance used to be set at .0009 degrees, but one user requested it be opened up to .009 degrees so more duplicates would be found in a specific POI file he was working with. This is now allowed as max with the default still set at .0001 degrees.

I noticed in the 'Wal-Mart_US.csv' file that none of the 'possible duplicates' have the exact same coordinates. Setting this variance to .00 will give a final file with no duplicates found.

Thanks RT that was awesome

Thanks RT that was awesome. By increasing the search variance for duplicates from .0009 to .004, I was able to clean up 3 of my favorite POI files. Great Improvement!

POI Verifier II

I recently purchased your software, and love it! I was just wondering if I could make a request? I know that it would be easy for you to do.

On the screen that pops up when you find a duplicate. I was wondering if you could make hotkeys for the options? I have had some files that have multiples and it takes forever to get through. (still quicker than manually)

T - Top Duplicate
B - Bottom Duplicate
X - Exit

This would allow the user to choose the radiobutton to delete without having to click the radio button followed by the Okay button. It is not an issue when you have four, but I combined files the other day, and had 80.

Thanks for any help you can give. grin grin

Thanks for the suggestion. Great Idea. v2.0.0.6 adds the three hot keys you suggested:
ALT+T - Top Duplicate
ALT+B - Bottom Duplicate
ALT+X - Exit

plus:
ALT+B - Keep Both
ALT+O - OK

It's still a two-step process (so one must confirm the 'delete'); but the confirm can be done by ALT+O instead of clicking the OK Button.

I also added the display of the duplicate's field 4 in the log file. That may help in viewing the 'possible duplicates' before doing the deleting.

All suggestions are welcome.

hot Keys

I tried it, and it works great. It sure saves a lot of time. I noticed that you do not have to press the (alt) just the letter since nothing else on the screen has been made to use those keys.

I keep one hand on the keyboard, and the other on the mouse over the (ok) button, and it works great, thanks.

FAQ: I have poi verifier II How do I upgrade it?

Edit: Answered my own question, I unistalled old, installed new, worked perfectly without any input from me... Easy as the program is to use...

Not if you already have v2.x.x.x

aophiuchus wrote:

If you have any version 2.x.x.x you can update to the latest version 2 without a new registration number. If you have a problem when updating, just let me know and I'll provide you with a registration number. Also, you will be able to continue updating to any new version 2 in the future as long as the run lasts. (The 'version one run' lasted approximately 18 months).

Thanks.

Super RT

I just combined all the speed trap files that I could find, modified them a bit with Excel, ran the new POI Verifier to set a 65 mph Speed and check for proper format, then just went thru in Notepad to change the relatively few lower speed limit locations.
Worked slick !
I run all my files in .csv format so it was quite easy to do.

Thanks for another significant improvement !
