Nuvi 260 Battery Life

I have had my Nuvi 260 for less than 1 year and have noticed the battery life is now very poor. I will charge it, then use it until the low battery signal then charge it again. I never leave it plugged in all the time. At first it would slowly drain & now it seems to drain very quickly (2 hours).

Any one else have this issue?

Summer interior auto heat is the foe to Lithium Ion batteries

The life of a rechargeable lithium-ion battery operating under normal conditions is generally about 500 charge/discharge cycles. This translates into about 2.5 - 3 years of battery life for the average user. As the rechargeable battery begins to die, the user will notice a decline in the running time of the battery. When a battery that originally operated the GPSr for a 4 - 5 hours and now is only supplying the user with an hour’s worth of use, it’s time for a new one. Also know this that leaving your GPSr in your car during the heat of day will effect the Lithium Ion batteries and even though they have the highest charge capacity this will cause them to deteriorate faster over time regardless of charge/drain cycles.

Did you not realize that operating the unit on battery (presumably to avoid cable clutter?) would result in an earlier death to the battery? Or is it just that it came a little faster than you expected? I have seen estimates of Li-ion battery cycles from 300 to 500, but as previously mentioned, other things can reduce those numbers (such as temperature, especially charging at high temp).

Nuvi 660 -- and not upgrading it or maps until Garmin fixes long-standing bugs/problems, and get maps to where they are much more current, AND corrected on a more timely basis when advised of mistakes.

If you've had your Nuvi less

If you've had your Nuvi less than a year, garmin will replace the battery free of charge. There are folks who have gotten a free replacement even after the unit was out of warranty.

Radio Shack also carries a replacement battery (web only) for $29.99 with free shipping.

Heat very well could be a factor..

Heat does increase the internal resistance of a battery thus reducing the overall output of the battery. It can explain the decrased runtime. Not entierly sure if it degrades the overall battery life at all. But a auto can get to upwards of 150 degrees F during a sunny day. I have a nuvi 260 as well. And do not store my unit in my truck when not in use.

ive had mine since march, no notice of degradation yet in power. I get about 4 hours of runtime.

Thanks!

I did not even think about heat. I do leave mine locked up in my work vehicle all the time. Most likely the culprit.

I appreciate the feedback & assistance!
