nuvi 650 and loading custom POI

I am new to the GPS world and I am having trouble loading custom POI on my nuvi 650. I am using POI loader and I am getting the following error when I try to load directly to the GPS. (The parameter is incorrect.) I can load them to my SD card, but I have no idea how to get to them in the GPS. I have tried to do this with Windows XP and with Windows Vista. I still have the same problem. Could I please give some help and a lot of advise on the nuvi 650.

Thanks,

Steve

More Information Please

We need a little more information. What is the specific POI file(s) giving the problem and what site did you download it from (here?) and exactly what steps in the POILoader program are you going through? At which POILoader screen are you getting the error?

We'll be glad to try and help. smile

.

Don't put the data files on your SD card.

Create a folder on your computer for all your POI files and put the data files in that folder.

Then when you run POI Loader, point it to the folder you created on your computer as the source of the data.

Also, as an aside, the Rest Area Combined file is probably the file you want to use for Rest Areas.

Still need help

Ok,

I removed the Data file from my SD card and I got the Rest Area Combined File off this site.

I created a POI folder on my computer for the POI loader.

I am still getting the same error. (the parmeter is incorrect.) when I try to load to the GPS.

That is were I am getting into trouble.

Is your folder something

Is your folder something like this.
>My pois=main folder
>>rest stops.csv

On browse for poiloader you direct it to the main folder.

Documents/gps stuff/rest

Documents/gps stuff/rest stop.csv

So I am directing the poi loader to this (gps stuff) file.

.

Do you have the folder open on your computer when you are trying to load it? If so, close the folder.

And be aware that when you run POI Loader, you are selecting the FOLDER and not the FILE.

I doubled checked every

I doubled checked every thing and I am still getting the error.

I even created a rest area folder and placed the rest stop.csv file in that folder

I just tried to copy/paste a picture to my JPEG folder on the GPS and I received the same error message (the parameter is incorrect.)

Can't Load Audio Alerts To Nuvi 650

I have loaded a number of .csv poi files to my Nuvi 650 with no problem. However I wanted to set audio alerts for red light cameras and am having a hard time. I have followed the instructions in previous posts, but can't seem to get the mp3 to load on the Nuvi. I have one folder set up as "Garmin POI's" and in it are 3 csv files and a mp3 file for red light alerts. I named the mp3 file the same as the red light csv file, but can't seem to get it over to the Nuvi. Can anyone help ?
Thanks in advance,
Chris

So, you are getting this error regarding communication between your nuvi and your computer and not necessarily related to POI Loader? Is that what you are saying?

steveandtess.Just try this

steveandtess.Just try this simple set up to transfer the data.

1.Go to your documents and create a folder called my pois.
2.Click on folder my pois. Now put the rest stop csv file in it you downloaded from the site.
3.Hook up gps to computer using usb cable.
4.Run poiloader and when it gets to browse select my pois folder not the csv file.
5.Continue on with poiloader.

Same problem

Hi all,

I ahve the same problem, I discovered it in the same way, attempting to update poi's it would appear that this is a complete meltdown of the unit though... you can delete files from the device fine, but any attempt to copy or load a file onto the device, even through "my computer" results in the error "the parameter is incorrect"

so far I have tried doing as many resets as I can find with no success.... I have reset fractory defaults once the unit is on... still no joy..I have done a "hard reset" whereby you press the top right corner whilst connecting to a power source. selected "yes" for prompt to reset factory settings... still no joy. this is not a PC problem, happens on multiple PC's.

Bottom line is, Nuvi as a detected drive in windows will not allow any files to be transferred to it! ..... can anyone help ???

I am using windows XP

I am using windows XP sad

I am guessing whatever will fix steveandtess's problem would probably fix mine too.

I am currently in touch with Garmin about this problem also, so if they get back to me with anything useful, I will be sure to post on here.

.

When you run POI Loader, do you have the folder open on your computer that contains your Custom POI data?

I had the same problem with

I had the same problem with the message "the paremeter is incorrect." I am running Vista and called the Garmin techs and Dell techs and they could not resolve the issue. I finally had to send my 650 back to Garmin and they sent me a replacement and I have not had any problems since. Just make sure you get a authorization number before you send it back.

Agree with found07

This is now on its way to being resolved, (hopefully) and I learned that when dealing with Garmin, perhaps it is best to speak directly with their technical support people on the phone.

I emailed their tech support twice, the second time being rather thorough about the "parameter is incorrect" issue and the fact it happens no matter what I do. They continued to advise me and offer support, but each time getting no closer to solving the problem. So I called their tech support telephone callcentre and described what I believed to be the crux of the matter "parameter is incorrect" whenever I do anything, and the man on the phone said straight away that it was a memory error and I would need to send the unit back to them and they would have one back to me in 7 - 10 days.

So if like me or found07 anyone has this error, phone up garmin, explain the problem and they will probably get you to send the unit for repair / replacement.

any updates

I am getting the same problem and was wondering the if you got the problems straighten out. Thanks
