Program to Customize TTS Voices

If you've ever wanted to modify your TTS voice file, here's an easy program http://turboccc.wikispaces.com/TTSVoiceEditor

I tested it on my 750 and it works perfectly. I finally got rid of the annoying "recalculating"!!

Newer Garmin voices

Some of you may have noticed that TTSVoiceEditor is not working with newer voices. After a quick check, I noticed major differences between the new file structure and the previous one.

On the positive side, the new structure is not based on complex pointers that need to be changed. It is a simple XML structure embedded in the VPM. I have tools that could extract this XML structure to an external file. So far, I have nothing to re-embed the file after it has been changed. I suspect it is simple but I don't have time to do it. I need to fix Extra_POI_Editor.

Workaround:

Use a Hex Editor and make a search for the phrase you want to change. You can modify the existing text, but make sure your new string is the same size or shorter than the current one.

thanks

Thanks will give it a try soon!

THANKS GUYS!!!

I'm new to the Group but You Guys saved me a Ton of Headaches! I Just Bought a Used GARMIN NUVI 765T. I Paired it with a JABRA EASYGO HEADSET (BLUETOOTH).
I'm not Big on "New Tech" So I Still Listen to CD's in My Car ('10 Caliber).I'm a Hard Rock Fan So I Like the Music Loud. The Volume from My NUVI to my JABRA was so LOW I Could Barely get the Volume of My Music above 20 (0-38 is the Volume Range) and Still hear the Voice Prompts from the NUVI.I Took the Advice given and Downloaded the TTS EDITOR, Hooked up My GARMIN, Found it as G: Drive, Selected American_English_Jill and Opened it in the Editor.(Made a Back-Up Copy First).
First thing I Saw was "VOLUME-65".A Few Clicks and I had it to 99.Gave it an "In-Home Test" by Comparing the Phrase "Please Drive the Highlighted Route" using American_English_Jack, then My MODDED Jill through Both the NUVI Internal Speaker and My JABRA. WHAT A DIFFERENCE!!! JILL Is now Much Louder than "Jack"!!. I Have No Doubt I'll get My Music close to 32 again once I "Road-Test" the MOD.I had Already Ordered "Burton Acoustibuds" and "Umbo EarGels" for My JABRA. They Fit Directly into the Ear Canal and the Reviews on Both where Good.I Only spent $15.00 for Both. They are Supposed to Increase the Volume from any Bluetooth Earpiece. If They Do I May even Get My Tunes Back to 36!
Thanks Again. The TTS EDITOR Was the Most Simple of Programs but did a Great Job. I Advise Any and Everyone Having "Low-Volume" Problems with their GARMIN to USE THIS PROGRAM!!!!

BACK-UP

Consider It DONE!!! mrgreen I've Already Backed-Up "Jill" and that was the ONLY File I Touched but I See the Wisdom in Backing-Up All Files.

I'll let All know about these "Acoustibuds" and the "Umbo Gel" just In Case Anyone might be thinking on using them.

Voice

Can the voices be changed on the 40LM? The last program I tried said that it wouldn't accept a TTL voice file.

TTSVoiceEditor

After Having Increased "Jill's" Volume to 99 using the TTSVoiceEditor I went back to the TTSVoiceEditor Site and saw this under "HINTS#2"

change volume to high (volume = 75). Not tested yet.

I Am Assuming this is in the Program Files Somewhere.

Can it be Changed to: change volume to high (volume = 99). to Further Increase the Volume of My NUVI 765T?

If So where would I Find This File?

@ BOX CAR: BACK-UP Complete! grin 3897 Files, 3.16 GB.(there are some Audio Books and JPEG's from the Previous Owner.

BTW. Is There any Way to Receive E-Mails telling Me when New Posts are Made?

nope

Nope, no emails. But there are definite advantages to checking back often and being active. You start getting badges (icons) after your name among other things.

I'll do That!

Any Idea if I Can Open the File I Specified in the Above Post: [change volume to high (volume = 75)]and Increase My NUVI's Volume even More?

Where is this File Located and What Software do I Need to Open it?

there are differences

ptfrohne wrote:

There are differences in the speech engines in the different series. Some voices will only work in the higher end (Premium and Advanced) units and not on the Essential line like your model 40. Conversely, the low end voices don't work in the higher end units either because of the speech engine differences.

Only the TTS voices that came with your unit will work on the unit. Different speech engines and all.

Zumo 595LM

Good day!

Has anyone been able to get the app to work on 595 voices? I tried, but it says they are not a valid format. New to the 595 so maybe I'm doing something wrong.

Any and all help appreciated.

Geo334, I, too, have a 1450. It's ten years old and the battery died on it probably seven years ago, but I still update the maps when they become available and it still soldiers on.
That TTS voice file that you mention - is it still available somewhere? And is it used only for changing the built-in Garmin announcements or can it be used for TourGuide purposes also?

recalculating is one entry.

recalculating is one entry. you can put more than one word in each entry. mine is blank for recalculating.

My biggest peeve is ON as in "turn ON main street". It would be nice if they didn't teach improper English. One does not turn ON main street, one turns ONTO main street. Turning ON main street would be like making a U turn ON main street.

THE problem is that can't be fixed with the editor because they use ON in other statements where it is proper and ONTO would be wrong.

That is like everyone likes to "jump in the shower" Why would you do that? Maybe there was a mouse in the shower with you.
Proper English would be "jump INTO the shower" However, the best thing to do is not to JUMP. STEPPING into the shower would be more appropriate.

I had a different one that I used to use but somehow I lost it. This one seems to work pretty good. http://www.fromtexttospeech.com/
(If it pops up with an mp3 extension just change it to a wav. extension and it should work. It has for me when I would create a new wav. file.)

Maddog67, that link worked perfectly. It created an .mp3 file which works both as an .mp3 and as a .wav on my laptop. I haven't tried it on my GPS yet, but I don't see why it shouldn't work. Much obliged.

Depends on the age of your GPS

Older units use .mp3 while the newer ones use .wav

I don't know where the line between old and new(er) is, but my GPS is a 10-year-old Nuvi 1450.

You don't mention which Garmin model you have. From this link, newer GPS models that use TTS3 voice engines are not able to use the program:

That's too bad. I had a celebrity voice on my 255W and loved hearing Gary Busey give random thoughts on long trips. Some of his observations were priceless.

Having worked with Busey, I can also attest that it is just like him. Plus, these were the real celebrities, not some imitator. I miss Gary.

Gps

I have a 2495lmt

He's not, but "gary" my GPS is

I called my GPS Gary because he would always tell me where to go, and interject random thoughts from time to time. On a long trip, he would suddenly start honking at geese.

Good to Know

I will look into at a later date.

TTSVoiceEditor v2.90 working under wine-1.7.53 on linux 3.18

FYI, in case this helps anyone who searches for this...

Thanks to a forum member who sent me a copy of TTSVoiceEditor v2.90 this morning I have been able to get this running under wine-1.7.53 on linux 3.18.7-200.fc21.x86_64 without modification. It just works.

At first Wine complained that MSVBVM60.DLL was missing but I was able to correct this problem using "winetricks vb6run". Google for details.

Also thanks to the original developer of TTSVoiceEditor... ten years and your program is still used and appreciated. No more annoying "Recalculating" on my Nuvi 255W and 265W (paid $10 for one and $0.25 for the other, and they're working great!)

ME TOO

Can You send me an email like that one? i have the same problem as he does. Thanks!
