Tracking database revision status

Hello,

I am new to creating POI files and was wondering if there is an agreed method of tracking revisions to a database? I have noted some corrections for other files and it made me think what I would want for tracking updates to my own files. I have seen others put the revision in the filename, but it is probably not uncommon for the filename to be changed by people, thus losing the revision information.

I was wondering what others thought about putting in a false record or appending information to the first or last record to record the revision status. For instance you could have either of the following embedded in the POI file itself.

0,0,"Lowes","Filename and Revision"
0,0 is in the middle of an ocean so it is doubtful anyone would try to route to that location.

or

x.xx,y.yy,"Lowes","Address/Phone/file/rev"
Where this is normal location with file/rev added to where most put the address and phone. Keeps from possibly having numerous extra points at location 0,0 but affects an actual data point.

Any opinions which is better? Or maybe most don't think it is worth the trouble? I'd like to hear your thoughts.
