Update for nuvi 2xx - software version 4.30

...

cool.

*Added additional voice support.

does that mean more languages? or added vocabulary..

additional voice support...

I would think added vocabulary as languages are optional and selected individually after the software is updated.

But, that's just an educated guess...

Simon

Thanks for the heads-up

Here are details on the update:

Changes made from version 4.10 to 4.30:

Improve handling of the situation where overlapping map data is present on the device.

Added additional voice support.

Still no map scale?

Sounds like Garmin has again failed to restore the map scale. I probably won't bother with it.

Latest Software?

Hmmm. I tried to download the new software using WebUpdater and it says I already have it installed. Is there any way to access the Nuvi's installed software version number?

It did show additional voices I could add. Is that the "upgrade"?

My 260W is only a month old, but might have come with the latest version...

Finding software version installed

On the menu screen of your Nuvi, put your finger on just the battery strength icon for 10 seconds. It will bring up a screen with a variety of information, the first line of which contains the software version installed. It should look like:

SW Ver 4.30 etc.

Hope that helps!

WAV still supported?

If anyone has loaded this onto their 200-series, can you check and see if the back door to custom alerts still works with WAV files? I would hate to update my 200 only to find out they shut off the unofficial ability to load in WAV files via the POI Loader software.

Thanks,
PT

Got It!

Thanks. It does say version 3.40. Does the 260W have a different version number?

Also with this version, the WAV files still upload and work correctly.

Yes, the .wav files still work with the new update to version 4.30. I just ran two simulations with several different .wav files and they worked flawlessly. Good thing, huh?

Why no email?

Thanks for letting us know about update for the 2xx series. This is the third time I found out about an update for my 260 from this site. I wonder why Garmin dosen't send out emails to us? I am sill under warranty and have received emails about 2009 maps and a new news letter. Thank God for this site!! Thanks again!!

Each model has different

Each model has different software versions because of a different feature set. 260w even has a different type of GPS chip. The updates for one model don't necessarily apply to all.

Why?

gdfaini wrote:

Why would you not update just because it doesn't have something you want. I don't really see the value of a scale anyway, not to the point that you apparently do anyway.

I'm not going to ignore updates just because they won't give me the ability to use routes... That just doesn't make any sense to me. Are you punishing Garmin for what you perceive as a shortcoming? rolleyes

Losing stuff is one risk.

rapriebe wrote:

Well one good reason is that by updating you *might* lose something you do want or find something doesn't work right or the same as it did before.

A perfect example was once upon a time you could go to a hidden menu on the nuvi 200 and enable the logging feature to track your route then later download it to a computer. But the next update removed that undocumented feature from them never to be seen again.

The update doesn't indicate any benefit for me, so why risk a bug? Another thread indicates there might be a problem with 4.30.

I think that the inverse of that is a better question. Why would you update if you are not having a problem? The old "if it ain't broke don't fix it".

Updates

Updates are usually released to address a perceived problem. I can't imagine that Garmin's programming staff would just sit around dreaming up stuff to update if there wasn't any need for it. But to each his own.

And like others I've found that the early warning for a turn isn't there any more, at least not for the short run I made to test it. It'll make my wife happy though as she always thought that Jill was too chatty anyway. I expect that we will see another update soon to fix that, and then I will have to decide if I want to do it, or if I like the new, more reticent Jill. wink

The loss of advance warning for turns is DANGEROUS. People need to complain to Garmin immediately before someone gets hurt or killed due to the advance warning being removed. I can't imagine that this was done intentionally.........

If I don't perceive it, I figure there's no immediate need. But I'm thankful that there are people like you who rush to discover bugs.

That's because that is when Garmin stopped offering manual update files for the 2x0. they obviously don't want us to be able to go back if we don't like what they did in their update (like remove warnings or map scales)

Garmin response

Dear Paul

Thank you for contacting Garmin International.

I would be happy to assist.

The issue is one that our engineers have been made aware of very
recently. It seems to be caused by the version 4.30 update on specific
nuvi 200 series units. Currently we do not have a fix available.

I have recorded your email address and will respond once a fix becomes
available.

Thank you for your patience with this matter.

we got the message across. Now to see how soon the fix will come out.

Dear Simon,

Thank you for contacting Garmin International.

I'd be more than happy to assist you with this issue. This is an flaw in this update that we discovered yesterday and our people are working to fix this issue immediately. There will be another update very soon to fix the issue, however they have yet to tell us when. Right now all I can say is that this is a known issue and that we are working round the clock to resolve the issue. We do appreciate you patience and apologize for the inconvenience.

I wonder why ... uh oh...

They don't make the previous version available in the mean time?

We use a similar software

We use a similar software deployment mechanism where I work (and I don't like it there, either) which does not have a graceful way to back-track.

Overlapping map data?

Can somebody please tell me what overlapping map data is and why I don't want it? Thanks in advance for the help.

--
Nick

Map datum rarely

Map datum rarely stops/starts on a precise "line" on a map. There is usually an "overlap". I'm guessing their software didn't handle that "edge" correctly in some cases, and probably disjointed roads along the edge. More problematic would be issues that this would cause for the routing engine.

And please quit watching me read this smile
