Hi,
Does anyone here upgrade to the latest Nuvi 200 firmware to v4.30? I noticed some problem compared to the previous one v4.10 about the turn by turn direction. The new firmware does not seem to prompt next action in advance anymore, such as "Turn right in 300 ft" then following up with "Turn right". Now it is just "Turn right" around the corner only. This is truely sucks and I plan to reverse the update.

How will you reverse the update? Garmin doesn't offer manual update files for the 2x0 anymore.

You are right!......... I
You are right!.........
I experienced the same issue today after I upgraded to the v4.30.
I came to rely on advance notice for turns to now having to watch the screen more closely so as to NOT miss a turn.
Hopefully they'll correct this error very quickly.

Damn,
I used my unit (nuvi 260) last night and noticed the same thing. Was not sure at first because I was concentrating on the road, but reading it here at least confirms that I'm not going crazy...
It does coincide with my upgrading to 4.30.
I had backed-up the whole drive prior to running the web-updater so I will try restoring the whole content and see if it reverts it back to version 4.10. Backing up is wise, as long as restoring works. (We never listen when they say, always test your back-ups...)
I'll try to post my observations before the end of day.

Complain to Garmin
If this is truly happening you need to complain to Garmin immediately. Don't wait for someone else to do it. Not getting the advance warning is definitely NOT something that should have changed and it is dangerous. All GPS units should warn in advance of the turn as well as remind you at the turn. If this feature has been broken by the recent update it needs to be addressed immediately.

On hold with Garmin now....
I upgraded our 260 yesterday to firmware version 4.3 but have not had a chance to test it on the road. My problem, I don't remember if the unit actually gave an advanced "Right Turn" warning followed by another "Turn Right on...." as you arrived at the intersection under version 4.1. Based on everyones comments, I must assume it did (darned it's tough to get old)!
Used the GPS simulator and verified that the system now only gives one "Turn Right" instruction about 300 feet before the turn at normal city road speed. I'm anxious to hear what others find. I'm also on hold with Garmin right now to see what they say. I'll share anything they may offer.
Called Garmin
After 4.30 update to my 260, I have all the problems that were mention above. I called Garmin, 35 min. wait. when connected I was told that I needed Tech support, waited for 25 min. He went through all my settings, he then had me download 4.30 again. He said to see if this fixed the short distance problem. He said that there is some rule that he could not walk me thru getting the older setting, but their are web sites that you can find the old updates to do it. Took a ride, still the same. Sent an email to Garmin asking for sites.

Testing?
It does make you wonder what kind of testing they do on these things before they release them. As a programmer myself, I (as well as the analyst(s) assigned to the project) would have a lot of explaining to do to management about releasing something like that into production.
Thanks for the heads-up before I installed this release into my Nuvi.

all 5 turns on my way home were notified JUST before I needed to actually turn. And as a software developer for 30 years, I find this insane!
Now one thing Garmin dev probably doesn't do, is test this after deleting certain/most voices, which we almost all do. I'm wondering if the new update uses a phrase sequence that our old voice files didn't have?
nüvi 200
just tried the text/voice
just tried the text/voice update....no joy
during my simulation TO TEST THIS, I was able to see that I got no aural feedback until I was 150 ft from my turn....at 30mph that's only 3 seconds to "hear" what you were told and do something about it. At that speed perception and reaction time will burn up 1 second, so now you have 2 seconds to swerve in front of traffic to make that turn
nüvi 200
How fast were you guys going?
I have a 350 and a 760 and I have found that when driving at quite a slow speed, I will only get a single announcement of when to turn. I would guess the speed that triggers this would be less than 25 MPH or so. Just wondering if by chance when you all tested the new firmware you were driving under 25 MPH or slower.

I just got my 260 and had to update to 4.30 to get free 09 maps. After reading these posts, I put my 260 and 750 on the windshield and went for a drive. The 750 gave three warnings before turn, the 260 gave one and it's not speed related. This is bad and I've sent a support request to Garmin.
Behavior
Here's how I remember this:
Version 4.1
Turn Right in 250m on "street name"
...
(silence until I'm almost there, say 20m)
Turn right on "street name"
Version 4.3
...
(silence until I'm almost there, say 20m)
Turn right on "street name"
This is definitely not the behavior I want...

Okay, spent 15 minutes on hold with Garmin before talking with a very patient tech. Tech confirmed that they have received many E-mails and telephone calls about this. He said Garmin is working on a patch but was not sure when it would be out. Guess I'll learn not to be on the bleeding edge of future updates
Went ahead and walked through every setting and confirmed the system was set 100 percent correct. Just to be sure, the tech grabbed a 260 and was able to duplicate the problem. At first the tech though we could download the previous 4.1 version from gpsinformation.net, but we found the site is only up to version 3.4 for the nuvi 260. Sure seems strange that Garmin support does not have access (internally) to version 4.1?!?
If someone can find a copy of 4.1 to download they would be a hero...at least until Gamin gets a "patch" out!
Thanks for giving me an idea....
I just downloaded all the updates for my units...

Backup your drive prior to any update!!!
How will you reverse the update? Garmin doesn't offer manual update files for the 2x0 anymore.
It is quite simple, you need to backup the follwing files when connected to nuvi to your pc *prior* to the webupdate, assuming f:\ drive is the main unit memory (I also assume that you do not upgrade voice etc, just the firmware. Otherwise you need to backup more folders and files):
1. f:\Garmin\Diag\sys_log.bin
2. f:\Garmin\gpx\current.gpx
3. f:\Garmin\GUPDATE.GCD
4. f:\Garmin\GarminDevice.xml
If you need to perform a restore, copy 1, 3, 4 back to the unit memory and disconnect it from PC. Turn on the unit and it will warn you that you have an update that is older than the current software and ask you if you want to proceed the upgrade (downgrade really) and wipe your user data, confirm the action. After a short while it will reboot with the older firmware (contained in GUPDATE.GCD) without your setting and favorite anymore. Get in and reconfigured the system preferences. Connect the unit again to PC then copy back item 2 for your favorite. You will lose recent visited places though.
I already verified that only the above files are needed to restore, really only 3 and 4 is truely needed but I do not want to lose my favorite because of incompetence of Garmin engineers...

Jeff - great information. Sure wish I had backed up these files BEFORE doing the update. Oh well, experience is a great teacher
You definitely seem to know your way around the inside of the Garmin's. Wouldn't happen to know where someone could find a copy of 4.1 for a Nuvi 260??
C'Mon Garmin, Full Disclosure!
I had the same problem with my nuvi 200. I wanted a 2009 map update and it forced me to update my software version first. Now I don't get the advance spoken warning that a turn is approaching.
Until I read this forum, I thought I was going insane -- thinking that maybe I imagined the behavior change. I was searching Garmin's support forums for any info on this and they have *nothing*.
So.... if users are complaining and Garmin obviously *knows* there is a problem, why don't they post that information on their support site and say they are working on a solution???
So people like me don't have to waste 1/2 their night searching garmin.com for a clue as to why their device is behaving badly.
Post a new request here....

Ask around to see if anyone here had a backup of the GUPDATE.GCD file for the v4.1 of your model, then backup your existing favorite (item 2) should be able to get you back. You can probably survive the downgrade without the GarminDevice.xml file because it probably get rebuilt after the downgrade. If not then you may have to re-upload your custom POI or other extra such as their travel guide since those are defined in the XML file. I added those just to make sure it will work (travel guide and redlight POI survived the downgrade) but I am kind of guessing 1 and 4 may not be that important.

This is weird. I got a Nuvi 200w for Father's Day, and it forced me to upgrade to 4.30 when I downloaded the 2009 update. I still get turn warnings between .5 and .8 miles ahead of time. I still get "In .5 miles turn right". I certainly get them before 300 feet.
This is Weird
When did you update to 4.30? You mentioned that you got yours for Fathers Day. I bought my Nuvi 200 one week ago and updated to 2009 NA Map and Firmware to 4.10 (that was the latest version, at that time), that same day. It looks like 4.30 just came out this past week.

See my instruction above, get item 3 (v4.10 update) extracted from his unit, backup your item 2 (favorite) then copy the item 3 to your own unit....
Master reset will not automatically revert since your unit memory contains the v4.3 update.
Jeff
No and No
If you do a master reset, will it revert back to the orignal firmware? I don't know what it was in April when I bought it. Would I lose the 2009 maps?
It will be No and No for your questions. Both map and the update (v4.3) are saved in your unit memory so master reset will not clean them, just your setting. You need to follow my instruction in this thread to downgrade to v4.1. Make sure that you got the correct model and version of the update if you did not backup your own and got it from other source!!
Idiotic reply
I sent email to Garmin regarding the issue and got a totally idiotic reply. Obviously the guy didn't READ my mail because the reply has nothing to do with the problem I was reporting.

Thank you for contacting Garmin International. I'll be more than happy to help you with this.We ask our customers that come across addresses or errors in the mapping to fill out an error report form. This form then goes to our mapping company for them to investigate the information provided and release the information on the next update. We come out with updates every 12-15 months usually in late summer. I have provided you with the direct link to the error report form below.

The wide 2x0 nüvis use a different firmware version than the non-wides. If they don't have the same bug, I suspect the fix won't take long for Garmin to figure out.

What do you mean "what you have loaded"?
I've only had my Nuvi 200 for 1 week. In that time, the only things that I have done is update to 2009 Maps and Firmware to 4.10, on the day I bought it. Everything was working fine after that. I then added a few Favorites, again everything still working. The only other thing I did was update to 4.30, that's when the voice prompting stopped.

I highly doubt that as many people are reporting the same issue and for me, it occured just after I ugraded.
I had backed-up my unit before the ugrade so I was able to roll-it back last night. It was quite a lenghty process (I restored everything, not just GUPDATE.GCD) and did not have time to test it yet.

That is not a quote of anything I said...
Also I said I wondered if it could be something that is loaded to a 2x0 that caused the problem, not that it was causing the problem. The update may have caused a conflict with gpx files or gpi files... And I'm still not saying it does, I just am wondering... And what I wonder isn't going to solve the problem or make it worse... It's going to have exactly no affect at all...
I guess I should keep my musings to myself, sorry if I ruffled any feathers….

It was something I said while quoting you. Nested quotes got mixed up. Also, I did not feel ruffled. I was only answering your musing in what I thought was a constructive discussion, so don't keep it to yourself.
As for data files generating the issue, it would be really hard to confirm because, unless someone can attest that a vanilla unit with only the update on is affected, I assume that we all fiddled with the content of our devices. Adding a custom vehicle here, deleting the Danish voice file there, a few csv files and a gpx file. Only a complete detailed inventory of affected devices compared to unaffected ones could possibly identify a culprit.
Another thing that points to the update alone is that a couple of post above, FreddyP said that when he was on the phone with Garmin the tech was able to reproduce the bug on a unit that I would assume was not customized.

I have performed each update available since I bought my 260 (April 2008). I guess I have been lucky and have not experienced any issues with them (knock on wood). I just installed update 4.4 and will see if it worked tomorrow.
Upgrade Version 4.4
I upgraded to version 4.3 a couple of days ago because I was getting a stuttering from the TTS. It sounded like someone was keying the mike when she spoke. It only happened sporadically but was annoying all the same. After the upgrade I tested the unit over a route that used to give the faulty speech pattern and it had been fixed but now the voice prompts for turns were coming very late. It seems Garmin have had a few complaints because they released version 4.4 within days and everything is now back to normal.
Got to give them credit for the quick fix.

Connect the unit again to PC then copy back item 2 for your favorite. You will lose recent visited places though.
I already verified that only the above files are needed to restore, really only 3 and 4 is truely needed but I do not want to lose my favorite because of incompetence of Garmin engineers...

Hello,
I have a Nuvi 205 which I got a month ago. It shipped with sw ver 2.70. I believe the latest firmware for this unit is 4.80?
Before I update to the latest firmware, I want to back the unit up so that I can revert to the original firmware if I don't like the update.
However cannot find the GUPDATE.GCD file anywhere on my Nuvi 205. Does anyone else notice this too?
Is there a another way to revert to older firmware if Garmin has closed off our ability to use the GUPDATE.CGD file method?
TIA
Nuvi 250W
