Wal-Mart, Sam's Club, Super Walmart discussion thread

I decided to start a discussion thread regarding this set of files.

This is one of the most frequently updated files on the site and I could really use the help of one of our veteran members to take this project over for me.

What I am looking for is someone who is very active on the site that can keep up with all the updates that happen with all of the files in this one POI Package: http://www.poi-factory.com/node/9268

If you have additions or corrections to make one of the files on this list, please post them here in this thread.

Thanks,

Miss POI

Walmarts

Sorry but I don't have an answer. Download the files again and re-install.

There is no WalMart in Lake Pleasant. The closest is in Anthem.

From Yuma when I type in phoenix or Glendale, everything works fine.

Comment

Just a heads up, for donaldb530 mainly. Target is coming up to B.C. All our Walmarts are being made into Super Stores in the lower mainland Vancouver. Not sure what's going on up north.

WalMart from Arizona

The Lake Pleasant AZ Walmart is probably listed as Peoria... I tried both the CSV and GPX files with the same result (closest one in Canada). I'll try the latest version tonight and let you know...

Is there separate files for each the Sams and the Wal-Mart?

I have a file conflict when I add the OV2 file and the Icon files. they have to be the same name and I would like for the Sams to be identified and the Wal-mart to be identified with their own icons.

and to add 2 icons with the same name does not work. How can I resolve this?

The only way I can think of is to use excel and separate them into 2 separate files. I don't use Sams, and have thought of that. Too much work. I also don't set up an alert for them. If I want to go to walmart I just look to see which one is the closest and hit GO. I find Alerts a real pain. The larger your POI directory is the more they go off.

I use both stores.. I don't wanna be going to one and thinking I am going to another.

I guess I will have to research how to make ov2 files and hope for the best. Thank You for the info.

If you were to set up alerts through poi-loader on this file, it would go off every time you passed one of the stores. In time it might drive you nuts, not to mention the fact that in your home town where you already know where these stores are it would also always alert you. The other question you need to ask is, can i turn Alerts off? My unit can. If you can, then it matters not. If you go into the walmart file when its loaded on to your unit you can see which store is what, and which store is the closest, all are named.

donaldb530 wrote:

If you are going to do distribution centers, I think it almost needs to be a separate POI. As a shopper I don't care (or would have any need to find) where a distribution center is. The list would be for a very small segment of those that use the Wal-Mart files, those needing to drive their 18 wheelers. When I search for a Wal-Mart location I'm normally interested in only 2 things, the type of STORE and if it has a fuel stop. And I'm one of the majority of users for your file. Including parking for RV owners fits within the primary usage as they also shop in the store.

As to my personal use of the file, the first thing I do is strip all the Sam's Club listings. I don't have a membership and no intent of paying for one as with just the two of us we don't buy bulk. After stripping the Sam's locations I then pull all the stores with fuel into a separate file but leave them in the primary file as well - they are stores after all. The fuel locations get put into my Fuel Stop category along with gas station files and truck stops so if I need fuel I can bring up a listing of nearby fuel stops regardless of the type.

It all comes down to personalization of the file. My requirements may not satisfy someone else but then their needs are probably not my needs either.

Walmart POI

I have attempted to use Walmart POIs on two occasions in different parts of the country and in both cases the information wasn't even close to being correct.

What is wrong with the file?

If the coordinates are incorrect then the maintainer needs to know. That is the only way that the file (or any file) can get better.
Have you sent corrections to the maintainer?

Can you cite some general examples? For example, the Walmart was actually a mile away. Or, there wasn't a Walmart anywhere around.

I ask this because Walmarts are usually set way back from any road on which one would be traveling and would not alert unless the actual file coordinates were moved within 30 meters of the approach road.

Custom POI or Built IN?

Donaldb530's file is very accurate. I have submitted only 3 updates to him in 3 years and I have traveled all over this country. The walmart locations that came with my Garmin are inaccurate in many cases. That is why this forum is great.

Why is the data different?

The information on the CSV and GPX files are different. It seems to be a fairly common problem that one file will contain things the other doesn't. This time the GPX doesn't list Gas Stations.

--

The CSV and GPX files are different

The CSV and GPX files contain different details about the stores. This isn't the first time the information for the stores doesn't match between the files. The latest GPX doesn't list those locations with fuel.

Gas and NOP?

Box Car wrote:

The .gpx file indeed does not show whether gas/diesel is available at stores near me (as should be), but does show gas for lots of stores. Wonder how that happened.

(NOP)

What does this comment mean? I am guessing No Overnight Parking, but I do not find any indication of that from the Walmart store locator.

Also, the .csv file has Walmart spelled as "Wal-Mart" while the .gpx file is spelled "Walmart" (which would be proper based on the web-site). This means that the two file do not sort together in the alphabetical list.

It would be helpful to label both with the file type (only the .gpx file has the type in the listing).

Walmarts

To jagermann - what stores near you don't show gas? If you let me know, I will add them.

(NOP) does stand for No Overnight Parking. Info gleemed from may sites and input.

I can chang names to match. No problem.

You're right re: the meaning of "NOP". That information is probably not available from the Walmart store locator because overnight parking is not a service that Walmart officially offers. It's just something that many Walmart stores have allowed, with the tacit approval of (or maybe even encouragement by) Walmart management.

The "GO" text does not appear when I pull up a walmart or samsclub location on my Garmin NUVI. The map and store information appear, but without the GO icon, the Garmin can't give directions on how to get there. All other POIs work fine. Any advice on how to get the GO symbol on the walmart POI?

gives me the Go regardless of whether I get one from built-in POIs or from Extras.

Have you tried reloading the file?

The "GO" text does not appear.

I tried reloading the Walmart POI on my Garmin 1450 and also a friend's 1450 and the GO icon does not come up on either when I choose a particular Walmart. I cannot understand what we are doing wrong.

By chance due you have the word redlight or speed in the file name with Walmart?

This is from Garmin Help.

Why do I not have the option to press the go button on my device when viewing the details of a custom POI?
r
10/06/2010
If you have loaded any custom POI's that are speed or red-light cameras, you will notice that you will not receive an option to hit 'Go' to those locations.

This is designed to operate this way. The custom POI locations for such cameras will start with a number, and if it starts with a number, the software will read it as speed or red-light cameras.

Such locations would not be selected as destinations to travel, but just areas to be alerted of, which is the reasoning behind this design.

Numeral?

gecko wrote:

Does your csv or gpx Wal-Mart file you're loading with POI Loader to the nuvi contain a numeral anywhere in the file name;

e.g., WalMart[1].csv?

A numeral in the filename will result in a "no green GO button" and seems to be the most common cause of a NoGo.

Other examples:

Motel6.csv will not give a Go button
Motel_six.csv will give a Go.

Brilliant! Thanks so much!

Brilliant! Thanks so much! Removing the numeral in the file name was all that was needed to get the GO button.

Proximity alerts not working for the Walmart/Sam's Club POI file

Is anyone else having problems with audible proximity alerts for the Walmart/Sam's Club file? I noticed recently that my POI proximity audible alerts aren't triggering any more. I've checked the map locations of the longitude/latitude co-ordinates, and they seem to be located on the physical locations of the Walmart or Sam's Club buildings. These locations are sometimes 50 or more yards from the nearest roadway. I was under the impression that the co-ordinates had to be located on the nearest roadway to the physical building location, in order for the proximity alert to trigger, and sound the audio alert.
Have the co-ordinates for the locations been moved so that they are now situated directly on top of the buildings?
I can't explain this issue any other way, except to say that I've checked the maps for other proximity alerts, and if the co-ordinates are too far off the nearest roadway to the POI, the proximity alert doesn't trigger on my nuvi 855. It used to work fine a while back, but it hasn't been working for a while now.

I will continue to research the problem, but I was looking for input from others who use the Walmart POI file for proximity alerts. Are you having problems as well?

Regards,
Mike.

TourGuide

roadtrek190p wrote:

I can't explain why what used to work doesn't anymore, but if you really want an alert for these, TourGuide may be the answer. Remember that for TourGuide to work, it must have an associated audio file--and your 855 can use either mp3 or wav audio.

Several faqs here describe TourGuide:

http://www.poi-factory.com/node/6656

I don't use the Walmart file, but I do use the Schools file (which IDs locations by the school building) and with TourGuide, I get alerts. Without TourGuide, alerts are quite rare.

Not moved in 3 years.

roadtrek190p wrote:

Regards,
Mike.

I used Walmart when I was learning TourGuide. My nearest WM was set back 500 feet from the highway & the Sams was 600 feet, with the long/lat on the building. I used a 700 foot proximity with good results.
I no longer use alerts for this file.

The internal format of the Wal-Mart file keeps changing with virtually every update so it is possible that the markers are also being moved from the nearest roadway to the actual building.

Not true

The information in the file for individual locations does change on a fairly regular basis. Its not just the details for each store, but where the data is placed. I break down the GPX file every time I download and strip out what I feel is unneeded data. So, unless you play with the file on a regular basis, you are incorrect.
