POI Loader Error

Hi.

I just got a 200w Nuvi today and have been trying to use the POI lOader.

Since the Nuvi didn't come with a usb cable....I am just using a similar cable from my Canon Camera.

It appears to be working as I've been able to process the map update.

However, when I try the POI loader I keep getting a communication device error.

Any suggestions??

Windows PC with Vista.

Thanks-

If it works with the update then it should work

When do you get the error message?

It happens when I get to the

It happens when I get to the menu where it needs to find the device on the system.

I think it should normally auto populate since the device is on and connected via usb. however, this is when I get the error.

It even happens after I select the find device button.

I have tried rebooting, reinstalling POI loader and still no luck.

Can you see the Garmin device

In windows explorer?

try changing your USB cable

try changing your USB cable to another connection on your PC sometimes there is a conflict whit an other device on that port .

Yes, I see it in windows explorer

I was clicking on the POI Loader icon on my desktop.

Then I would follow the prompts. I believe the second prompt tries to find the device and this is were it is happening.

I can open my windows explorer and navigate into the nuvi without a problem or the sd card I have installed.

I am just new to this so perhaps there is another way to do POI's

On the off chance...

That Canons usb cable might be the problem, I hooked my 760 up with it, and poi loader finds it without a problem... shock

Could there be some other device in your system, that it might be having difficulty talking to? (a USB stick, that sort of thing?). (On my system. it occasionally causes my bluetooth phone to ask me if I will accept a connection!! - it's spotting a serial port in the system and interrogating it!).

POILoader doesn't need do any 'communicating', as such, when it talks to a Nüvi - it just treats it as a disk (and so no drivers are required either). Sometimes it gets itself tangled up with other devices, that it thinks might be older Garmins.

Failing that, check for disk corruption on the Nüvi, lack of disk space on the PC - POILoader's error messages are somewhat lacking...

Usb cables...

I did a bit of research into USB cables - apart from the now fabled resistor between Pins 4+5 (to signify a Garmin charger), the other difference is that some don't use a twisted-pair for the data leads. Apparently, these can only be used on low-speed devices.

Now I just need to figure out if a Garmin is classed as a high-speed device...

(All the cheap Chinese 'novelty' usb accessories seem to dispense with the twisted pair...)

I'm not sure what I was doing but I used a different cable, probably one with the barrel type device on the cable that's tied in a knot.... What's that all about Paul? BTW the canon doesn't have one and the garmin does....

I'll try another cable

I've tried many things but still no avail.

I am going to try and find another cable.

I cannot seem to understand why it's a problem.

You may need to install the USB driver update from the Garmin Support site.

Works under Vista w/o Compatability Mode too!

I'm using Vista w/SP1 on an AMD Turion 64 (32 bit) with the USB cable from my Nikon camera (non-Garmin). POI Loader works perfect without the need to use Compatibility mode. I do have the latest USB drivers and POI Loader. Certainly makes one wonder???

issue resolved.

I have adobe photoshop elements which was launching when I plugged in the nuvi.

Once I changed the setting to not auto launch the POI Loader found the Nuvi.

Now that I got this solved.

Quick question about POI's.....

After loading a couple of the POI's I have found that I only find them under the extra menu.

Is this correct?

I was expecting to see them listed under POI's vs. Extras....

--

Extras

What you are seeing is correct. Custom POI files show up under Extras.

Tampa, FL - Garmin nüvi 660 (Software Ver 4.90), 2021.20 CN NA NT maps | Magellan Meridian Gold

another question

if the poi's which are custom show under extra will they show on the regular map if I were searching for an address or an address that happens to be a custom POI ?

--
Keep on Keeping on- joe dirt

They're only available through

custom pois..... I'm not sure I understand the question... What do you mean regular map? If you do a search for an address it won't find a custom poi...

--

.

They will show up on the map if you are zoomed in close enough, but they will not show up when are you search any part of the built-in data.

But the custom poi bmps

will be on the map...

custom maps

is there a way to make a custom map?

Ie. I have access to the E911 addresses for my county.

The preloaded map wouldnt have all of the addresses or let alone the country roads but I'm wondering if there is a software that will allow me to make my own custom map for my county?

Or can I only do this via POI's?

I was thinking of using the Fire Numbers since those are unique but not sure .....

--
Keep on Keeping on- joe dirt

There are maps made for Garmin units

That aren't made by Garmin, so it is possible to make maps, but it's beyond my knowledge.....
