tracking for Nuvi 260?

I've read comments about the 3.4 version firmware for Nuvi 200 has a hidden tracking feature.

I would like to try this on my wife's recently purchased nuvi 260. What version of the firmware do I need?

According to the post below do I need version 3.40? can I use the nuvi 200 3.4 version or do I need the nuv260 version? Not sure if old Nuvi 200 firmware works on all nuvi 2XX models.

Or is http://www.gpsinformation.org/perry/nuvi/nuvi260_340.exe
the version I need to try?

You would need the 260

You would need the 260 version of the firmware. The latest version for 260W for track log would be 3.4.

Yes, that would be the correct version.

I inquired from Garminb

I inquired from Garminb about the tracking feature for Nuvi 260W, and I was informed that this model is not able to do tracking. If it works, please let us know.

By the way, what does one do with the file that comes from gpsinformation.org after it is downloaded? Is there any risk to the Nuvi 260W?

Thanks.

Sometimes referenced as tracking (tracks), logging (logs) or routing (routes).

Wide and non-wide the only difference.

The 2x0 and 2x0W use different versions.

As far as I know, all 2x0 units use the same firmware and all 2x0w use the same firmware.

The 2x5 units will probably use different firmware because of the different chipset.

Too late?

Now that I've had my 260 for about a month, I've gotten things set up the way I like and learned enough on this site to start delving into other things.

I'm interested in rolling back to 3.4 to get tracking capability but I'm not sure if I can.

I've upgraded the firmware to 4.4 - Is it too late to roll back? I've read that at some point the firmware updates removes the ability to roll back.

Thanks

I've had my 260

I've had my 260 through all the versions since last December and none have had tracking as far as I know. The software for one model will not work in a different one, so what the 200 can do is irrelevant to the 260. The reason that they don't include it in the auto GPS is because it is relatively useless. In a handheld the tracking feature can help you find your way back out of the woods, in a car it doesn't matter... in fact retracing the route is often impossible because you would be driving on the wrong side of the freeway, or the wrong way on a one way street.

As far as I can tell, the only real uses are for parents to spy on their kids or for employers to do the same on their employees, and there are cell phones and other GPS systems that are better designed for that purpose.
